Union Street station is just a five-minute walk away, whisking you into Manhatten in half an hour. This apartment sits in a handsome red brick building in the heart of it all. The open kitchen, living and dining room is particularly spacious for a New York abode, with wood flooring and pristine white walls keeping a contemporary feel. A little office room sits off the living room should you need to catch up on work. The real bonus is the private garden. A glass door leads from the kitchen to a patio with dining for four – so it’s easy to dine alfresco if the weather is fine. What once was a day centre for children has been lovingly renovated into a cosy and contemporary apartment. Situated on a quintessential NYC brownstone block with young families and pups walking the streets, not only does this Park Slope home feel residential and homey, it's nearby some great restaurants and shopping. Take a seventeen-minute cab to the Brooklyn Bridge, walk to the leafy green expanse of Prospect Park in only eight minutes and still feel away from the clamouring tourists and nonstop traffic. Back home, our favourite spot is the large garden out back – complete with a quaint patio area with a dining table, chairs and a comfy outdoor sofa – it's the perfect space to enjoy a snack or glass of wine after your days out. Inside, there's an air of understated elegance with grey and silver tones, ornate mouldings and an original fireplace. Serve up a couple of cocktails from the drinks trolley and find a cosy space in the snug to play games or curl up and relax. For an authentic trip to Brooklyn, this spot ticks all the right boxes.

This classic three-storey brownstone townhouse is located on one of the best streets in Fort Greene. While there is a chance you might hear some outside noise, we think the location is well worth it whether you're travelling for work or leisure. You'll have a dedicated study here, and while parking will be tricky, public transport is close by for commuting. You'll be near multiple parks, great for family days out at Prospect Park Zoo or the Brooklyn Art Museum, and there's an array of local shops and restaurants just minutes away.

The Little Red Book

Comfort and style combine at this Brooklyn apartment, making it a great base for those visiting the city. If you're looking to work while you're away, you'll find a fully-equipped workstation here. Meanwhile, the sleek chef's kitchen encourages home cooking and laidback evenings at home when you're not out sampling the local eateries. Location-wise, the home is well positioned on a tree-lined block in peaceful Carroll Gardens. Perfect for anyone visiting the area to see friends or family, Rustic Maeve offers lots of space and a cosy interior. Some of the furniture is a bit mismatched, but if that’s not something you’re particularly concerned about then staying here will be a wonderful experience. With five different subway lines within a two-block radius, it’s also brilliantly connected – it will take less than twenty-five minutes, for example, to get to Lower Manhattan. If you’re in town to explore the area, then you'll love that beautiful Prospect Park is a thirteen-minute walk away.

Located in hip Brooklyn, within walking distance to Bushwick and Williamsburg, this home is perfectly located for those wanting to see a more authentic side of New York City. Designed by a local architect to bring the calming presence of nature into the home, this pocket of tranquillity will knock your fluffy white socks off. Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Take a wander by the casual eateries, hip bars and indie shops, before reaching the beautiful expanse of Prospect Park, only a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

Situated on a one-way street in the heart of Greenwich Village that Eleonor Roosevelt once called home, this six-storey Romanesque Revival building makes for a classic New York home from home.

Inside, the spacious apartment blends original nineteenth-century features and modern finishes offering a breathtaking fusion of styles. An open-plan living room/kitchen provides direct access to the outdoors via a balcony, alongside expansive views over downtown. So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. Head upstairs, and you'll uncover a rooftop terrace that offers direct southern vistas over Washington Square Park, MacDougal Alley and the Empire State Building. 

Down at street level, the delights of Greenwich Village await. Undoubtedly Manhattan's most charming neighbourhood, it's attracted the city's quirky and creative types since the sixties. Uproarious comedy clubs and excellent restaurants make it a real nighttime destination, but there's plenty to do during daylight hours. Stroll half a block to the much-loved Washington Square Park, lay out on Pier 45, or wander up to Chelsea Market for cuisine from every part of the globe – both fifteen minutes away.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.





It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing

While this home may be modest in square footage, it sure is mighty. Packing a punch in both convenience and amenities, a solo traveller or couple will be very happy here. With an impressive private terrace – that's almost as big as the home itself – you can thoroughly enjoy some downtime after a busy day with an aperitif under the stars. When you do find yourself at home, there's a comfortable sofa, writing desk and kitted-out kitchen complete with washer and dryer – a rarity in an NYC studio – so you can show up and start living as soon as you arrive. And did we mention that it's only a ten-minute walk to the Flatiron building? Continue for ten minutes more and you’ll reach the Empire State, the Morgan Library and Museum and the tucked away barbecue joints of bustling Koreatown.

You'll be within easy reach of Union Square market, with hip eateries and bars nearby. For those on a sightseeing trip, popular spots such as Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden are all a short walk away. With a well-equipped kitchen and dining table there's potential for eating in, while the laptop-friendly desk serves as a nice space for working remotely – though some street noise should be expected.

Speaking of, you'll be in the trendy Lower East Side, a short stroll away from multiple subway stations and close to great bars and restaurants. This is a walk-up apartment, though, so climbing stairs is necessary.

Give East Village living a whirl at this smart townhouse set within walking distance to the chilled-out cafes and vibey music venues of the Lower East Side. Set out across three floors –⁠ there’s plenty of space for you to all spill out here, and the dedicated desks are handy should you need a quiet place to work. With no private parking to speak of, you’re best off sticking to the subway – just a four-minute walk from your door. Or, if time is on your side, hit the streets – there's no better way to take in this happening city.

There's nowhere that says New York living quite like a loft – it's as New York as skyscrapers, Times Square and Central Park, and this stylish place in hip Tribeca is a classic example. All the typical elements are here – we're talking an open, spacious living space with high ceilings, towering columns, huge windows and wooden floors.

What sets this home apart from others, though, is its fabulous art collection and many pieces from luminary designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Sori Yanagi, as well as light sculptures by Marrow Project. We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Select a bottle from the wine cooler, choose one of the books off the well-stocked shelves and relax in style.

You can really live like a local in this home's location as well. This Lower Manhattan neighbourhood is known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants or soak up the atmosphere in nearby China Town. Oh, yes and if you're a film buff, you can get your fill with the Tribeca Film Festival, held here every June.

Located on a charming cobblestone street in the South Street Seaport and built in 1793, this lovely, European-inspired loft was once an ice house. Sparely furnished and set across two floors with an intentional open-plan living space, the easy flow between rooms is freeing. Both levels boast wood-beamed ceilings and original artwork created by the host himself. While this isn't the most luxurious home on our books, it's cosy and bright, a fluid mix of rustic and modern.

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of the Clinton Hill neighbourhood in Brooklyn, this characterful duplex is situated on the upper three floors of an original Brownstone. It's stylishly decorated throughout, and we love the plentiful period details, the sash windows, attractive fireplace and exposed brick walls. There might be quite a few stairs to contend with but other than that this warm and welcoming home is hard to fault. Lovely terrace too!

Location is everything here! Situated on a really charming street in Greenwich Village, The Itty-Bitty is perfectly positioned to some of the city's best restaurants and bars. This is a 300-square foot walk-up, but so long as you don't intend to do some serious cooking or massively spread out, this cosy apartment will do just the trick.

Nestled in New York City's vibrant Flatiron neighbourhood, this pet-friendly studio makes a fabulous base for business and leisure trips. The kitchenette is small but well-equipped for rustling up light bites or a quick breakfast, and with plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area, you'll want for nothing when it comes to trying out local cuisine. The nearby subway opens up the city for commuting and sightseeing, while hotspots like Madison Square Park, the Empire State Building, and NYC's bustling Koreatown are an easy walk away.

The Heart of Flatiron

Experience one of New York's trendiest areas from this eclectic loft, nestled in the heart of Soho. With a well-equipped kitchen, breakfast bar and dining table, there's potential for eating in, but the cafes and restaurants lining the streets just outside your doorstep might convince you otherwise. Try a different one every day between visiting Rockefeller Park, Washington Square Park and China Town.  There's plenty else to see within walking distance, but the public transport links nearby can also get you to The Empire State Building or Manhattan Park in minutes.  That's a thumb's up on location – now throw in light-letting oversized windows, plenty of space and an office, and you're onto something.

This chic, light-filled loft boasts an envy-inducing location in the heart of Soho. Huge windows and 14-foot ceilings mean that it’s a bright and welcoming home, with an open-plan living and dining space that’s sure to impress even the most discerning travellers. The chef’s kitchen will delight gastronomes – though there are plenty of restaurants, bars and coffee shops nearby if you prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals. This comfortable and well-equipped home is an excellent base, whether you’re in NYC for business or leisure. There’s even a convenient desk for those needing to work during their stay.

This three-storey Brooklyn townhouse is nestled in a vibrant and walkable neighbourhood. At full capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in one of the two colourful living rooms, and parties strictly aren't allowed here. With a projector in one of the living rooms, a wine bar in the kitchen, space for alfresco dining and Sonos throughout the house, it's ideal for large groups who want to feel right at home. We think it's especially great for families – the fifth bedroom has a cot for little ones, and a range of items are available for baby-proofing the home, from table corner guards to plug socket covers.

Merging comfortable living with statement design pieces, it’s easy to see that Tea Tree Hall has been curated with love and care (the host’s own photography and artwork decorate the walls, for example). Split across two floors, there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. The neighbourhood is very much in the grips of gentrification, but Tea Tree Hall is situated on a quiet block in the historic part of Bed-Stuy, and if you visit in summer you’ll find locals hosting street parties and inviting friends and family around for a barbecue.

Warm and cosy, despite New York City's cold temperatures come winter (don't worry there's air conditioning for the summer months too), this little alcove of an apartment is both a humble and practical choice to enjoy while in town on a short trip. Perfect for solo travellers or couples, in particular, you'll be amidst all of Manhattan's action here. While the location is this home's biggest attraction, its clean white interiors and studio layout invite guests to catch some respite with ease and comfort between activities from day through to night – you are in the city that never sleeps after all. Located just down the road from the Tenement Museum, the apartment sits in one of New York's most historic (and most authentic) neighbourhoods. The Lower East Side is known for its careful balance of grunge and chic, so if you're after a true New York experience (in terms of space as well), this is a great choice in an even better location. And since you’re so close to some of the best boutique shops, restaurants and bars in the city, chances are you’re likely to spend more time out than in, which makes this the perfect place to come back to after a busy day. 

The Alcove

This charming duplex lies in Manhattan's West Village. Spread over multiple levels with the kitchen up on the mezzanine, groups will have plenty of space here, though you'll need to climb a lot of stairs. If you're looking for a home base while working remotely, you'll find computer equipment and standing desks to maximise productivity. The private garden is spread over two tiers and is equipped for barbecues, with outdoor seating and sun loungers. While children and little ones aren't permitted, we think friend groups will love it here thanks to its proximity to bars, restaurants and shops.

Madison Square South

Located just off Stuyvesant Square Park, this practical apartment is surrounded by peaceful open spaces all while placing you in the heart of nonstop NYC. You're also a short walk from leafy Union Square, with plenty of casual eateries and bars nearby. Back home, the space is bright and comfortable with the large windows framing pleasant green views. While there's no desk here, the dining table doubles up as a laptop-friendly workspace for those in the city on business.

From the moment you step inside this New York loft apartment, you can tell the owners are an artist and a chef. The huge, open living area has a gourmet-level kitchen and light floods in from a wall of windows, plus there's an incredible art and design collection. One bedroom is a little small but both are perfectly comfortable and the vast loft-style living area makes up for it. You’re in the heart of Tribeca here where the movie-set-like cast iron loft buildings are home to endless restaurants, bars and even food markets. Plus, the Lower East Side is right next door.

Sitting in a beautiful brownstone, this Clinton Hill apartment is a sophisticated home in a cultural part of Brooklyn. It's in good shape with large windows welcoming lots of light and an open-concept kitchen perfect for socialising and cooking simultaneously. It's not the most luxurious home on our books, but comfortable and inviting for mature couples or a group of friends.

Located in trendy Williamsburg, you'll have plenty of hip bars and indie shops nearby, while the ferry over to Manhattan is well within reach. The apartment itself is modern and practical, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. There's a desk if you need to work remotely, while the uncluttered bedrooms are ideal for decompressing after sightseeing. The compact kitchen is well-equipped for preparing light bites and quick meals, but when dinnertime arrives we recommend heading out and sampling the local eateries nearby.

Blue Velvet is a fabulous two-level apartment at the top of a historic building in the buzzy East Village/Union Square. We love the open-plan kitchen and living space, gorgeous brick walls, numerous fireplaces, including an outdoor one on the killer wrap-around roof terrace. But perhaps our favourite part about this Penthouse are the two huge terraces where you can watch the day pass by on the streets below.

Built in 1796, this red-brick townhouse is one of the oldest houses in New York City. While the exterior is a beautiful example of Federal architecture, the interior is all modernity with a sleek gourmet kitchen to please the fussiest of chefs and a huge main bedroom with a free-standing tub in the loft. Those working remotely can make use of the dedicated office room and there are additional workstations in some of the bedrooms. There’s plenty of room to spread out between the main lounge, the movie room downstairs and the private backyard furnished with a dining table.

Whether you're in Manhattan for business or pleasure, this apartment is a fuss-free spot to rest your head. It's perched in bustling Midtown East, just a few blocks from the East River and walking distance from landmarks like Rockefeller Center and the MoMA. The apartment itself isn't wow-worthy, but it's stylish enough and the kitchen is well-equipped for an NYC pad. Be sure to take advantage of on-site amenities, ranging from a shared library and rooftop terrace to a communal fitness centre and playroom for little ones. There's even rare on-site parking, but you’ll need to pay to use it.
