There are two things in this loft apartment in the Gramercy Park neighbourhood that you might not typically expect to see. The first is a baby grand piano (how did they get it up to the top storey is what we want to know), the second is the resident cat called Edith. Previous guests will attest to the fact that her presence is completely stress-free and even adds to the cosy factor when you're lounging about. This home has obviously been designed by somebody with an artistic outlook, as the walls are covered in prints and the shelves are jam-packed with books. Although we're guessing you didn't come to The Big Apple to just read. Go out the front door and you're on Park Avenue, right in the middle of Manhattan. Walk twenty minutes to your right and you'll reach the Chrysler Building, Ten minutes in the other direction will get you to the farmers' market at Union Square.

Dive headfirst into the ultimate New York experience. This home has a chef's kitchen and a barbecue for meals on the private terrace, as well as an outdoor lounge for post-dinner drinks. Plus, with a Peloton bike and Lululemon Studio Workout Mirror, you'll find everything you need to stay on top of your workouts. Though the space feels calm, the city sounds will gently remind you that you're in the heart of the Big Apple. Just outside, the galleries and restaurants of Union Square and NoHo are waiting to be explored. However, we won't blame you if the allure of an evening at home with a martini in the garden followed by a soak in the marble tub proves irresistible.

Is there anything more quintessentially New York than exposed brick walls? We don't think so, and this studio flat in Gramercy Park delivers on that front. This apartment may be snug, but it has plenty of style – we're obsessed with the orange sofa, for instance – and the space is super cosy. There's even a patio with a lush outdoor sofa and a picnic table, which is rare for this part of town. When the weather is nice, sit out there with a glass of wine and soak up the sunshine, whiling away the sultry summer evenings. We're not going to deny that the kitchen is pretty compact, but that's all part of the charm of living like a true New Yorker. It's well-stocked with everything you need, but seeing as space is tight, we think you'll lean towards dining out. If that's the case, you're in luck – Gramercy Park has an array of upscale eateries and trendy bars for you to try. Also nearby is the farmer's market at Union Square – a fifteen-minute walk – which has fresh fruit and veg if you decide to rustle up a meal. This is a quieter spot, but it's still close to all the sights – you can walk to Times Square in half an hour, but 23rd Street Station is a ten-minute stroll if you'd rather take the subway.

Newly renovated, this home boasts modern furnishings and a charming interior. It may be on the small side, but it’s got the ease and cleanliness of a perfect vacation rental, especially in a city where we reckon you’ll be spending most of your time out and about. Your host is also super experienced and will be available should you need anything during your trip. This isn’t the most exciting neighbourhood in the city, but its proximity to many vibrant areas makes it super convenient and offers a place of refuge after a busy day (or night).

This home has been designed solely as a rental space, so it’s lacking in some of the warmth and character you would find in a personal home. But we were won over with the large size of the bedrooms and the sociable, open-plan communal area. The location is also very convenient as it is very central and easy to get around to different parts of the city. There is not much around the home in terms of nightlife, so it might be better suited for a family vacation. 

Riverdale

Boasting an enviable location in Hudson Yards with easy access to Midtown Manhattan and the Theatre District, this apartment is an ideal base whether you’re in the city for business or pleasure – and the added bonus of the desk makes remote working a breeze. Comfortable for six guests, there’s just one bathroom here, so there could be a queue to get ready in the mornings. But, with a well-equipped kitchen, you can rustle up an American breakfast to fuel up for the day while you wait. 

The Marine

Watching the ferries sail to and fro on the East River will become part of your daily routine at this wonderful Murray Hill Apartment. It's right on the riverfront, giving you an excellent view of glistening Long Island City across the water – you can enjoy the vistas from bed with a morning coffee, or with a sundowner on the wonderful private balcony. The rest of the apartment is understated yet chic, with statement prints on the walls and comfortable furnishings that will make you feel right at home during your stay. If you fancy a workout then simply pop to the on-site gym, or opt for a gentler start to your day with a hearty breakfast at the glass table. Seeing the sights is easy from here – a walk to visit the iconic Empire State Building or Grand Central Station takes just fifteen minutes. The excellent transport links make getting around the rest of the city easy too – those travelling for business will be glad to know that the subway will whizz you to the financial district in just half an hour.

Situated between peaceful Kips Bay and affluent Gramercy Park, you'll have plenty of fashionable restaurants on your doorstep, while key attractions such as Madison Square Park and the Flatiron building are around a ten-minute stroll. Or browse the shops of Waterside Plaza, next to the East River, the same distance away.

Pick up some local delicacies from one of the nearby 24/7 delicatessens (this is the City That Never Sleeps, after all) to enjoy back at this studio. We love its exposed brick walls, large windows and cheery yellow sofa. It's the perfect place to rest your feet after a busy day of sightseeing or work if you're here on business (there's a desk here too). Or rustle up some New York-style cuisine in the kitchen – everything you need is here.

This home is small – there's no way around it. What makes it stand out though is its efficient use of space and how the mid-century furniture creates a clean and simple look, making the space feel homely but not too busy. The bathroom has been recently renovated, although there are some scuff marks on the walls, and the kitchen is also of a high standard, albeit small. The best part is the outdoor deck, which is as big as the entire home and has tonnes of seating, so you can spend long evenings drinking wine with your friends.

With a whopping 5,700 square feet, it doesn’t get much more spacious than this loft in NYC, stretching an entire block of Fifth Avenue. Inside you’ll find three large living areas, in sleek black and white with fur blankets adding a touch of comfort. The twelve-person dining table is crowned with a modernist chandelier above, like a work of art, and exposed pillars and huge windows throughout give you that real New York loft feeling. The kitchen isn’t short of space either, with a pendant-lamp lit island creating a social space during mealtimes, but there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area if you want to eat out – you’re in the beating centre of New York after all. When the time comes to hit the hay, each bedroom has a king- or queen-size bed and each one has its own walk-in wardrobe so there’s no need to pack light.

Right on the banks of the East River, this Murray Hill apartment has an enviable view of the river and city skyline. It’s a classy space of hardwood floors and gallery-white walls with a few pops of modern art livening things up. The white leather sofa was made for reclining and looks like the kind of piece a 1950s sci-fi author would dream up. While the galley kitchen is tucked away behind an alcove and has everything you need for self-catering.

In the building, you’ve got access to a stunning roof terrace, lush with greenery and with a view over the tops of skyscrapers to the river and beyond. If you want to keep on top of your fitness schedule, guests here have access to a fully-equipped gym too.

In Murray Hill, you’ve got buzzing eateries and shops galore on your doorstep. Strolling along East 34th Street you can reach the Empire State Building in fifteen minutes on foot letting you know just how central you are here.

It’s next to the East River, so you can start your day with a jog along the esplanade if you’re feeling active. If, like us, you prefer a slower start to the day, you might call into one of the many restaurants nearby for brunch – there’s no shortage of top-notch eateries in this area, so you’re never far from your next great meal. 

In addition to being centrally located, this apartment is also oh-so-convenient. You’ll have access to the shared gym and the laundry room, so you can really make yourself at home. After a hectic day of seeing the sights, this is a great space to come home to – it's stylish and comfortable, with everything you might need to hand. You can whip up dinner in the kitchen – ideal when you've had one too many slices of pizza and are craving something home-cooked – and settle down at the table by the window for a relaxed meal. The Peach has been newly renovated and great care has gone into ensuring a comfortable stay (we're looking specifically at that rainfall shower!) This home has impressively squeezed a full kitchen, plus all the amenities you'll need, into a very small space without making it feel too cramped. Better yet, you're situated in Gramercy, a tree-lined neighbourhood with a distinct small-town feel in a super central location, it's no wonder so many A-listers call this part of Manhattan home. Join them in trying the many great restaurants and bars in this chic area. 

The Peach

This apartment has a great address near desirable Chelsea. You're not far from Madison Avenue, perfect for a spot of designer clothes shopping. Other nearby attractions include the High Line and the iconic Flatiron Building. However, you don't have to go anywhere for vistas over the district, as this apartment has a shared landscaped roof deck with views across the city. Inside there's a nicely-sized kitchen for when you want to entertain and a desk in the main bedroom for catching up on work. Seeing as this is 'the city that never sleeps', though, expect to hear some noise during your stay.

Situated in the heart of Union Square, this duplex apartment's prime location speaks for itself. From here, you’re within walking distance of NoHo’s galleries, Flat Iron’s restaurants and Greenwich Village’s bookstores and theatres – though if you feel like hopping on the subway, 14 St - Union Sq is moments away. This apartment is minimal and bright, though lacking a little character. For those in need of a productive workspace, one of the bedrooms features a laptop-friendly desk, while the living room sets the perfect backdrop for unwinding with a drink, accompanied by some tunes on the record player.

Nestled in the heart of downtown Gramercy, this apartment makes a great base whether you’re in the city for business or pleasure. Sure, the stripped-back and fuss-free style may not be to everyone’s taste, and it’s quite small in places – the bedroom and kitchen, in particular. We're not going to pretend this home is filled with character, but what it does have is a prime NYC location. On the edge of Murray Hill, this is one of the city's oldest and most charming neighborhoods. The tree-lined streets are filled with brownstone townhouses, and you're within easy walking distance of Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Grand Central Station. If you’re looking for a night on the town, walk a few minutes to Third Avenue for great restaurants and bars. Back at your studio apartment, it's a small but very well-presented space. A great deal of care has been into the choice of modern, comfortable furnishings and the kitchen is fully kitted-out for cooking at home. Best of all, this building has excellent communal amenities – there's a pool if you feel like a few laps, along with a gym, a billiards room and a guest lounge.

Despite being located in the heart of New York City, this apartment's calm coastal colours make it seem a million miles away. Inside, it is elegant and incredibly comfortable. Everything you need is provided, from the plush mattresses to the fully functional kitchenette, to ensure a relaxing stay. We adore the lovely mismatched furnishings, especially the headboard made to seem like driftwood and the chair in the living room with Art Deco influences.

Step outside and you’ll find yourself on the very edge of the Garment District. Better yet, it’s only a ten-minute stroll to the iconic Times Square, deserving of a spot on any New York itinerary, or if you fancy exploring further afield, Grand Central Station is a twenty-minute walk away, and not one to miss – don’t forget to gaze up at the beautiful ceiling art either. Food and drink options need no introduction – you’re in Manhattan’s Midtown where every last craving is catered to at any hour of the day.

Whether you're checking out the produce at Union Square greenmarket (five minutes away), browsing the books in the Strand Bookstore (a seven-minute stroll) or grabbing a bite to eat and drink at one of the many bars and eateries in this neighbourhood, you'll be well-placed here to explore vibrant, buzzy Greenwich Village. The apartment is on a tree-lined street, overlooking beautiful gardens and traditional brownstones. It's a small space, but it's got plenty of character, including a decorative marble fireplace, ornate mirror and cushy furniture ideal for snuggling. On relaxed evenings at home, rustle up a delicious meal in the kitchen using your finds from the market before putting on a movie. We think it's perfectly suited for two people, but at a stretch, two more guests can sleep on the futon in the living room.

The kitchenette is small, but it’s equipped with enough to rustle up some light bites or late-night snacks – and with a plethora of restaurants in the nearby area, dining out is sure to be on the menu. If you don't fancy eating out or cooking in, it's just a two-minute walk to the local deli, so take some goodies back and enjoy in this home's giant back garden.
