So there's plenty of space to come together and socialise, whether you're stretched out on the sofa or preparing dinner in the handcrafted kitchen. 

Elsewhere, the bedrooms offer a haven of zen-like calm in the middle of Manhattan, with walk-in wardrobes and a Carrara marble en-suite off the main bedroom, adding a touch of luxury. Down at street level, the delights of Greenwich Village await. Undoubtedly Manhattan's most charming neighbourhood, it's attracted the city's quirky and creative types since the sixties. Uproarious comedy clubs and excellent restaurants make it a real nighttime destination, but there's plenty to do during daylight hours. Stroll half a block to the much-loved Washington Square Park, lay out on Pier 45, or wander up to Chelsea Market for cuisine from every part of the globe – both fifteen minutes away.

Gramercy Park is a small pocket of Manhattan known for its upscale eateries and village atmosphere, and your prime locale puts you within easy walking distance of both the Flatiron Building (ten minutes) and the Empire State Building (twenty minutes). We recommend popping over to Union Square Greenmarket (a thirteen-minute walk) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for some fresh fruit and veg to use in a delicious dinner at home. Or if you're in the mood to go out, grab a drink and a bite to eat at one of the neighbourhood's buzzing bars, restaurants and 24-hour delis.

Situated on a quiet Chelsea block, it's just minutes away from the bars and galleries this arty neighbourhood is known for. Plus, you're a twelve-minute walk from the Flatiron and can arrive in the Meatpacking District within fifteen minutes. The nearest train station, 23rd Street, is just a three-minute walk away if you need to go further afield. This is a tiny, 300-square foot studio, so won't be for those needing to spread out. But it's quaint and cosy as can be for a solo traveller or romantic getaway – and with a location like this, we think you'll be doing more going out than staying in.

This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.

It’s just under twenty minutes on foot to one of New York’s most famous landmarks, the Empire State Building, or Madame Tussauds New York is just over a five-minute stroll. Fashionistas, on the other hand, can head to the Garment District, home to the biggest concentration of fashion designers and manufacturers in the USA – just a four-minute wander. After all that sightseeing, you’ll need somewhere super comfy to chill out in – this apartment is perfect. With the home being where it is, you'll find yourself within walking distance of the world-famous Central Park, hip cafes, and other must-see landmarks. With a big tick on location, there's also a communal swimming pool, fitness room and sauna to win you over. Ideal for two couples or a small family coming to explore all the Big Apple has to offer.

This apartment is ideally suited to those looking to drop their bags and head out from the get-go. Its major draw is the fabulous location, placing you in the thick of NYC. Just a short walk away you'll reach the iconic Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building, and Union Square – though this does mean that some noise should be expected. Inside, it's surprisingly spacious for a studio flat, with a kitchen and dining area tucked neatly around the corner. There's a sofa bed for flexible sleeping, but we only recommend this for younger children.

There's nowhere that says New York living quite like a loft – it's as New York as skyscrapers, Times Square and Central Park, and this stylish place in hip Tribeca is a classic example. All the typical elements are here – we're talking an open, spacious living space with high ceilings, towering columns, huge windows and wooden floors.

What sets this home apart from others, though, is its fabulous art collection and many pieces from luminary designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Sori Yanagi, as well as light sculptures by Marrow Project. We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Select a bottle from the wine cooler, choose one of the books off the well-stocked shelves and relax in style.

You can really live like a local in this home's location as well. This Lower Manhattan neighbourhood is known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants or soak up the atmosphere in nearby China Town. Oh, yes and if you're a film buff, you can get your fill with the Tribeca Film Festival, held here every June.

It's a picture of minimalist Scandi style housed within a quintessential New York brownstone built in the 1800s, in one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in Brooklyn – Fort Greene. Designed by a local architect to bring the calming presence of nature into the home, this pocket of tranquillity will knock your fluffy white socks off. Stepping in to look around at the decor, you'll find plenty of light wood furnishings and wood-slatted blinds, vibrant pops of colour, tasteful artwork and playful cloud-shaped cushions that we really loved. It's quiet, understated, and extremely functional. Enjoy a good book in the breathable and refreshing living space made of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Take a long soak in the stone and wood bathroom, whip up a few lite bites in the pristine island kitchen, or pen your thoughts at the antique public library desk – whatever you do around this peaceful apartment, you'll be perfectly at ease. Out back there is even a small terrace for some fresh air, enclosed by leafy trees for a naturally private space. The neighbourhood is authentically residential Brooklyn, lined with trees and townhouses with their iconic stoops. Take a wander by the casual eateries, hip bars and indie shops, before reaching the beautiful expanse of Prospect Park, only a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

This spacious home has everything you need for a comfortable stay with your family and it's super stylish too – a little bit of boho flair with macrame wall art, bookshelves teeming with paperbacks and an acoustic guitar on the wall. Gather in the mornings and evenings in the open-plan kitchen, living room or dining room with soft, pastel-coloured furnishings and industrial-style windows that let in heaps of light. There’s a spacious dining table for entertaining, as well as the breakfast bar. It’s never too early to start mixing cocktails when you’re in the Big Apple. Why not take your drink upstairs to your private rooftop terrace and sip it sitting on the egg chair? There's a fire table for chilly evenings and here you can take in the sights and sounds of the city and enjoy a perfect sunset.

Bite of Brooklyn

Quirky details, like the exposed brick wall and fashion photography prints, inject character into this otherwise minimal home. The bedrooms are on the small side, but the beds are seriously comfortable, with a TV in both. It feels a bit compact, especially with the narrow shape of the kitchen and the dining table taking up most of the communal space. Nonetheless, the location in Nolita makes up for this – surrounded by little shops and cool restaurants, you won’t be spending much time cooking anyway.

Located on a charming cobblestone street in the South Street Seaport and built in 1793, this lovely, European-inspired loft was once an ice house. Sparely furnished and set across two floors with an intentional open-plan living space, the easy flow between rooms is freeing. Both levels boast wood-beamed ceilings and original artwork created by the host himself. While this isn't the most luxurious home on our books, it's cosy and bright, a fluid mix of rustic and modern.

With the waterfront Domino Park and the conveniently located Bedford L stop nearby, plenty of indie boutiques and lively bars right on your doorstep, and Bedford's shops only a three-minute stroll away, you're perfectly positioned to enjoy Brooklyn. Plus, the vibrant melting pot that is Lower Manhattan – Greenwich Village, Tribeca and the Financial District are easily reachable from this desired location. 

Curated by a creative host with a home-like approach to her apartment, you’ll immediately notice the artistic touch that’s been given to this bright space – from the zebra-print rug to the designer dining table, teeming bookshelves and beautiful pieces of modern art. Sky-high ceilings and tall casement-style windows create a bright and airy living space, giving you a great view of the tree-lined streets below. 

We particularly love the smart open-plan set-up, which allows you to pull up a chair at the island and perch with your morning coffee, hashing out an itinerary as breakfast cooks away in the designer kitchen, or perhaps you'll start the day with a gentle read in the comfort of the leather sofas. It’s a small space, especially the bedroom, but it's comfortable and well-thought-out. Plus, it offers one bonus that many New York apartments don’t – on-street parking. Of course, a car isn't necessary, as there are plenty of Subway stations within walking distance for when you’re keen to hop across the city.

There are two things in this loft apartment in the Gramercy Park neighbourhood that you might not typically expect to see. The first is a baby grand piano (how did they get it up to the top storey is what we want to know), the second is the resident cat called Edith. Previous guests will attest to the fact that her presence is completely stress-free and even adds to the cosy factor when you're lounging about. This home has obviously been designed by somebody with an artistic outlook, as the walls are covered in prints and the shelves are jam-packed with books. Although we're guessing you didn't come to The Big Apple to just read. Go out the front door and you're on Park Avenue, right in the middle of Manhattan. Walk twenty minutes to your right and you'll reach the Chrysler Building, Ten minutes in the other direction will get you to the farmers' market at Union Square.

From the moment you step inside this New York loft apartment, you can tell the owners are an artist and a chef.
