This home doesn’t try too hard, and that’s part of its charm. The building is almost a hundred years old, and as it used to be a tenement block, there would have been four or five places in the space that this roomy home now takes up. The living area benefits from large windows and tonnes of natural light, making the plush grey sectional a lovely spot to spend the afternoon reading or napping. Of course, if you have work to do instead, the corner desk is all set up for hitting the ground running. Prepare an elaborate feast in the huge kitchen (massive by New York standards) and enjoy it at the elegant dining table. There’s lots of exciting artwork (and taxidermy) around, contributing to the home’s quirky personality, plus two newly renovated bathrooms - no morning queues here. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll be deep in the East Village, with endless options for good, hip restaurants and watering holes that range from dive bars to artisanal cocktail destinations. Plus, you’re just a four-minute walk from Tompkins Square Park, where you can enjoy one of the city’s lovely green spaces.

Blue Velvet is a fabulous two-level apartment at the top of a historic building in the buzzy East Village/Union Square. We love the open-plan kitchen and living space, gorgeous brick walls, numerous fireplaces, including an outdoor one on the killer wrap-around roof terrace. But perhaps our favourite part about this Penthouse are the two huge terraces where you can watch the day pass by on the streets below.

Dive headfirst into the ultimate New York experience. This home has a chef's kitchen and a barbecue for meals on the private terrace, as well as an outdoor lounge for post-dinner drinks. There's nowhere that says New York living quite like a loft – it's as New York as skyscrapers, Times Square and Central Park, and this stylish place in hip Tribeca is a classic example. All the typical elements are here – we're talking an open, spacious living space with high ceilings, towering columns, huge windows and wooden floors.

What sets this home apart from others, though, is its fabulous art collection and many pieces from luminary designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Sori Yanagi, as well as light sculptures by Marrow Project. We could certainly tell on viewing that this apartment is owned by a creative director and designer. Select a bottle from the wine cooler, choose one of the books off the well-stocked shelves and relax in style.

You can really live like a local in this home's location as well. This Lower Manhattan neighbourhood is known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants or soak up the atmosphere in nearby China Town. Oh, yes and if you're a film buff, you can get your fill with the Tribeca Film Festival, held here every June.

Spread over multiple levels with the kitchen up on the mezzanine, groups will have plenty of space here, though you'll need to climb a lot of stairs. If you're looking for a home base while working remotely, you'll find computer equipment and standing desks to maximise productivity. The private garden is spread over two tiers and is equipped for barbecues, with outdoor seating and sun loungers. While children and little ones aren't permitted, we think friend groups will love it here thanks to its proximity to bars, restaurants and shops.

We love this stylish home's location in hip Tribeca, a neighbourhood known for its cobblestone streets lined with fashionable boutiques and chic restaurants. Chinatown is a twenty-minute walk or eight-minute ride, while the One World Trade Centre is eight minutes on foot. The iconic Empire State building is a fifteen-minute drive (just over twenty minutes on the bicycles your lovely host Yvonne provides), or if you fancy some green space, Washington Market Park is a mere two-minute stroll.

Back at this apartment, head up to the gorgeous, private roof terrace and take in the views over the Freedom Tower. Inside, textural 3D artworks adorn the walls, and dark oak floors are enlivened with colourful rugs and furnishings. For the kids, there's a fantastic play area with plenty of toys, books and games. There's a home cinema set up too. Our favourite feature, though, has to be the swing in the living area – so random and yet so right. This playful home is perfect for a family.

This is a 300-square foot walk-up, but so long as you don't intend to do some serious cooking or massively spread out, this cosy apartment will do just the trick.

Seeing the sights is easy from here – a walk to visit the iconic Empire State Building or Grand Central Station takes just fifteen minutes. The excellent transport links make getting around the rest of the city easy too – those travelling for business will be glad to know that the subway will whizz you to the financial district in just half an hour.

This New York apartment made it into our collection for its desirable location in the Upper East Side. You’ll have the Guggenheim close by for culture and Madison Avenue for shopping, as well as an array of eateries serving everything from classic New York bagels to Michelin-starred cuisine. Though compact, the home has everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay, including a well-equipped kitchen, a full-size sofa, and a dining table. And while there may not be any outdoor space here, the world-famous Central Park is within walking distance if you want to swap the city streets for open space.

Eastside Elegance

Warm and cosy, despite New York City's cold temperatures come winter (don't worry there's air conditioning for the summer months too), this little alcove of an apartment is both a humble and practical choice to enjoy while in town on a short trip. Perfect for solo travellers or couples, in particular, you'll be amidst all of Manhattan's action here. While the location is this home's biggest attraction, its clean white interiors and studio layout invite guests to catch some respite with ease and comfort between activities from day through to night – you are in the city that never sleeps after all. Located just down the road from the Tenement Museum, the apartment sits in one of New York's most historic (and most authentic) neighbourhoods. The Lower East Side is known for its careful balance of grunge and chic, so if you're after a true New York experience (in terms of space as well), this is a great choice in an even better location. And since you’re so close to some of the best boutique shops, restaurants and bars in the city, chances are you’re likely to spend more time out than in, which makes this the perfect place to come back to after a busy day. 

The Alcove

In a little-trafficked (by Manhattan standards) corner of the Upper East Side, Heirloom provides you with a haven to retreat, away from the bustle normally associated with the city. That calm feeling has clearly influenced the interior design as well, with certain nods to Scandinavia, and nice variety of houseplants. The kitchen’s a draw too, with a good set of appliances (although no food is provided). It’s set over two floors, with a terrace split over two levels as well, so even if you decide to use the futon, it feels like it’s big enough.
