Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.

Cook in the state-of-the-art kitchen, barbecue outside on the terrace or screen a movie on the home cinema setup. There's ample outdoor seating and a delightful, heated private pool to enjoy, and in the evenings, you could always treat your loved ones to a performance on the home's drumkit. We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. A matter of metres from the beach and surrounded by quiet streets perfect for walks and bike rides, it's also within easy reach of several shops and restaurants.

This centuries-old seaside village may be known as one of the most family-friendly places in the Hamptons, but its strictly adults-only activities include a visit to the nearby Wölffer Estate vineyards to sample their famed rosé cider. If hitting the many vintage stores in Sag Harbour isn’t on the cards, head out to explore the bay on one of the paddleboards or kayaks provided, by virtue of your own exclusive boat dock. Should that sound a little too energetic, you can also just take a dip in your private pool or luxuriate in the jacuzzi. From the moment you step foot inside, you'll feel right at home. There are 1.5 acres of land to explore out the back, with plenty of options for alfresco dining, whether you choose to relax with a barbecue under the wisteria or socialise on the patio. On hot summer days, go for a swim in the crystal clear pool, or lie back with a book on a sun lounger nearby. As if this wasn't enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. On Saturdays, amble over to the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh produce to whip up a feast. All in all, this is a delightful stay for young families or a group of old friends coming together.

A ten minute cycle or five minute drive will take you into Southampton, with its bustling restaurants and boutiques, or down to the sands at Cooper's Beach. Golfers will also be delighted to know that there are several courses within swinging distance. 

When In Bloom

The summer retreat for Manhattan’s wealthy elite, the vibe of the Hamptons couldn’t be further from New York’s chaotic urban sprawl. And if you’re looking for the ultimate in serenity and tranquility, this idyllic beach house is for you. Every element of this cottage has been thoughtfully considered to make the most of its seafront location on Long Island’s North Fork. Inside, the whitewashed colour scheme extends to every room, creating a soft, calming atmosphere. In the open kitchen/living room, vast windows and glass sliding doors welcome in the dune-studded view and ocean breeze. In the bedrooms, pressed white linen lies on pale-wooden bed frames, with driftwood adorning the minimalist dressing tables. And as relaxed as you’ll feel inside, just wait until you step outside. Where the decked terrace ends, the beach begins, meaning you’re just a couple of barefoot steps from the gently rolling waves. Bliss.

There's a huge, private garden with direct access to the water and an illuminated dock, so lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Hire a boat, or borrow the home's kayaks and paddleboard to make the most of its unique location. Inside, it's a bright and beautiful space with a truly loved and lived-in feel. Made up of two units, with a staircase joining them together, you'll find two kitchens, two living rooms, and a total of four bedrooms – plus a playroom which can act as a nursery. We loved the upper level's stunning dining area – large enough for you all to eat together, opening out to a large deck and offering panoramic views of the water (it's also where you'll find the piano if you're musically inclined). In the evenings, barbecue outdoors before lighting the fire pit and watching the stars come out one by one.

An understated colonial-style home is the perfect setting for a Northeastern getaway. It's reminiscent of a family heirloom, with history seeping through the walls. Situated on a bluff with views of the Connecticut shoreline, the home sits atop sprawling private acres dotted with centuries-old trees. A typical day here will take you straight back to the carefree life of childhood – gather in the kitchen for pancakes before slipping on your sandals to walk down the lawns to your very own private beach, before spending the evening playing games around the fireplace in a cosy living room. The home has featured in both Lena Dunham’s Girls, and more recently, The Undoing, starring Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman. Staying here puts you in elite company, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a unique house. Dating all the way back to the 1800s, when it was built as a coastguard station for the Long Island Sound, it’s been renovated since, but with lots of care put into maintaining the farmhouse atmosphere and the vintage furniture. The home is set on three acres of land on the North Fork, and from the veranda, you can hear the waves lapping against the shore of the private beach. It’s a magical setting, perfect for long summer afternoons (and if the water is too cold, there’s a 50ft pool as well). Colder evenings bring their own charm, as the vast kitchen and living room come into play. The large table seats fourteen easily, so every night feels like a dinner party, while the crackling fire in the other room sets the scene for an evening curled up on the sofa, with a hot drink in hand.

At this cottage by the water, built up on stilts, you’ll be able to watch it all from the comfort of home. Spend time lazing on hammocks under the cherry tree or take to the water on the home's canoe.

The bedrooms have that softbox glow thanks to neutral tones and lightweight curtains that offer privacy without blocking the light (so you may want to pack an eye mask for lie-ins). Step outside onto the terrace, and you'll find a seating area centred around a fire pit and a separate dining table, plus a grill for alfresco cooking on long summer evenings. The well-maintained lawn is plenty big enough for the kids to play ball games and keep themselves entertained. If you can tear yourself away, you're just fifteen minutes' drive from an afternoon of wine tasting or twenty-five minutes to Montauk Brewing Company. There are several areas for lounging, so you can snuggle up with a film or a book beside the fire, or simply head out onto the decking with a glass of wine and enjoy the sea air. This home offers the perfect city escape, and just one hour from Brooklyn and New York City.

Apart from the grand lounge, there are family hideaways tucked away and a big games room and cinema for time together. We love the surf shack in the garden – a lofty summer house with a wood-burner for chilly evenings.  

Where the Wind Blows

It may look Old World from the outside, but behind this home's traditional shingle exterior is a luxurious and playful home to call your own in The Hamptons. Packed with designer touches, we love the bright, double-height living space, with its character fireplace and huge windows. Parents can enjoy the privacy of the downstairs master suite, with the remaining three bedrooms upstairs. And perhaps while the little ones explore the play shed outside, you could pour a drink from the wet bar and grab a cosy spot on the patio. From here it's just a stroll into Bridgehampton Village when you're ready to explore – an area known for its great walks, cycle routes and water sports. Luckily, the host has provided a shed full of bikes, kayaks and outdoor gear (there's even an outdoor shower for afterwards). Cool off in the saltwater pool, then fire up the grill for a long, lazy meal on the patio or in the formal dining room – doors flung open to the pretty garden. It's just a five-minute drive to Water Mill, and a little further to Southampton and Sag Harbour.
