This home's architecture, interiors and colourful prints all share a mid-century modern style, but its woodland surroundings are more Hansel and Gretel than Gilbert and George. In a tiny hamlet in upstate New York, it’s surrounded by mountains, lakes and forest – great for skiers, hikers and wild swimmers alike. It’s the end of the line. Beyond this chalet, there’s nothing but Minnewaska’s protected preserveland. Spend days in New York’s prime rock-climbing location, exploring the drops and cliffs of the Shawangunk Ridge, or hitting Hudson Valley’s scenic hiking trails. 

Settle back at the peaceful chalet, hidden in the trees. Perhaps light the fire pit and chill out under the maples. Featured in both Dwell and the New York Times, we couldn't help but be impressed by this cabin, standing on 19 acres of private land. The reason for the media attention will be evident in the open living space. Perfect for socialising with your guests, the wooden furniture and beams overhead capture the frontier spirit – turn on the woodstove and play games, or make use of the projector. The bedrooms are small but comfortable and kids will love the bunk beds. Of course, the real draw here is the outdoor area – acres of private, forested land, a private pond (perfect for spotting wildlife), tree swings and fire pits collude to create a rustic paradise.

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

The Edge

In the quiet hamlet of Pine Bush on the outskirts of the Hudson Valley, this charming 1920s apartment is the perfect space to get away from it all. The interior is an eclectic blend of styles, expertly mixing antique furniture and period features with modern finishes. While the comfortable living room is cosy and bright, the fully-stocked kitchen – with its blue cabinets and retro table – is more mid-century inspired. We love how homely it feels. Picture morning breakfasts in the kitchen, meals around the dining table with a bottle of something local (there are plenty of distilleries and wineries in the area) and movie nights snuggled up on the couch. On nights you don't feel like cooking, the bars and restaurants on Main Street are only a five-minute walk away. When you're ready to venture out, grab your hiking boots and hit the trails at one of the nearby state parks. For a more relaxed pace, browse the valley's many antique shops or make the forty-five-minute drive to Poughkeepsie.

Furnished with antique pieces and an eclectic art collection, it’s a house that’s packed with personality – from the cosy lounge and gourmet kitchen (ideal for entertaining and evenings in), to the chic bedrooms and bathrooms (complete with refined roll-top tubs). As for the location, nearby Albany offers restaurants, river cruises, and a thriving art scene, and makes a great base for exploring New York State.

Built in 1800, Hitchbrook is a quintessential New England home. Surrounded by farmland and rolling hills, this home is a private getaway for those looking for a pastoral retreat. Think rustic but sophisticated; evenings in front of fireplace or relaxing in the den playing games and singing-along to the piano. There are some great hikes nearby – the hills of Hitchcock Corners and across from Mill Brook are wonderful for walking. For the cyclists, there are plenty of bike trails to get stuck into. We’d recommend picking up some supplies from the neighbouring villages of Millbrook and Lakeville, and crossing the border into upstate New York for a picnic.

Look out for artists, poets and musicians in the area around this home – it’s located in Springs, arguably the coolest town in the Hamptons. In the past, it’s played host to visionaries like Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, Kurt Vonnegut, Nora Ephron and John Steinbeck. Luckily, the home’s bright, colourful design lives up to its surroundings, with patterned throws and bedspreads, quirky artwork and unique furniture. There are 1.5 acres of land to explore, with plenty of options for dining outside, whether you choose to relax with a barbecue under the wisteria or socialise on the patio. There’s also a separate barn in the garden, which can hold a further three people. On hot summer days, go for a swim in the pool, or lie back with a book on a sun lounger nearby. As if this weren’t enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. On Saturdays, amble over to the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh produce to whip up a feast.

It’s no wonder why a multitude of actors, composers, and artists have hideaways in the Berkshires. This classic Berkshires home, originally built as a schoolhouse in 1866,  is steeped in history and rural charm. Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. This riverfront home is the kind of getaway we dream of every day. The infinity pool and views of the Hudson River are magnificent – just imagine how calming it is to wake up to views of this calibre every day. Inside, it feels incredibly warm and welcoming, making it perfect for family gatherings and spending time with your loved ones. The screened porch was extremely inviting, it’s the kind of place that inspires you to slow down. While there’s a lot to love about this home, we couldn’t get enough of the garden – manicured and green, it also boasts an infinity pool.

Once an 1890s carriage house, this home has been designed for country living for a small family. Low timber ceilings and hardwood floors retain the barn-like element, but instead of hay bales, you’ve got comfortable king-size beds for grown-ups and secret sleeping spots for kids in the mezzanine above the loft. Huge windows in the living room let in the sunshine, streaming through the trees, and in the evening, there’s a wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay. The open-plan kitchen has a large double fridge, kitchen island and plenty of storage space for all the fresh goodies from the nearby farmer’s market. You’re in the middle of nature’s bounty here, after all. The farm is at the foot of the Catskills, away from it all, so you can spend your days immersed in the wilderness of hiking and biking trails. Stick close to home and wander the acres of farm grounds, through woodlands, past ponds or just the short dander to the farm’s swimming pool.
