Located on the cusp of the Eixample neighbourhood, this apartment puts you in an excellent position to explore the city in style. It's right on the Ronda de la Universitat, a major thoroughfare in the city, but this sanctuary is pretty peaceful – thanks to it being on the inner side of the building, you get to enjoy the central location without the noise. We liked the splashes of mauve in the living room, as well as the use of natural materials. The kitchen is kitted out with basic seasonings and cooking ingredients, and there's a juicer and Nespresso machine to make mornings a delight. And the true standout feature of this home is the bedroom, with its impressive modern twist on a classic four-poster bed and painted brick wall. Step outside, and it's just a four-minute walk to the Plaça de Catalunya, and you can arrive at the labyrinthine Gothic Quarter in less than fifteen minutes.

Just a few blocks from Plaza de España and in walking distance of both Old Town and Barcelona's port, it's no exaggeration to say this two-storey home puts you in the centre of the action. We were fond of the modern interior, pleasingly combing with the traditional vaulted ceilings. The shaded terrace is a particularly nice touch, allowing you to grab some fresh air while you relax at home. When it's time to head out, you'll find museums and shopping centres practically on your doorstep.

Functional but with plenty of charm too, this home in Barcelona first caught our eye with its exposed brick and Catalan vaulted ceilings – all while adding in plenty of modern amenities. We also love that there is a little balcony here, handy for catching a glimpse of the city before you head out to explore. If you love art, head to the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, a ten-minute stroll away. With long corridors, there’s plenty of space for people to spread out and find their own quiet nook here – the balcony just off the main bedroom is a perfect example. We like the separate kitchen, which is ready and waiting to help with your culinary efforts – although, with Michelin-starred restaurants and cosy bistros nearby, we’re sure that meals out sampling authentic Spanish cuisine will be high on the agenda. 

Eixample Elegance

Looking for a base to work from home in Barcelona? This cosy apartment fits the bill. The second bedroom has a desk, though you can also hunker down at the dining table or on the sofa – perhaps while vinyl spins on the record player. Outside your door, there are an array of places to grab a bite to eat and something to drink, including the famous Mercat de Sant Antoni. When you're in the mood to sightsee, the Cathedral of Barcelona and buzzing Plaça de Catalunya are both a twenty-minute walk away. You'll also find a metro station nearby for adventures across the city.

Just looking at it, you wouldn’t expect Pulpo Gallego to be on the ground floor. It has most of the trappings of a loft, and wouldn’t feel too out of place in Williamsburg or Greenpoint. Maite’s done a lovely job setting it up. It’s been renovated in the past year or so, and even though it has a small and unusually shaped footprint, it easily feels large enough. You also have the benefit of being in Eixample, so getting around the city, either on foot or by public transport, is very simple.

It should come as no surprise that an interior designer was involved with the creation of this plush apartment. The chromatic and textural harmony and adept pairing of old and new furniture is no happy accident. Modern furnishings like the leather sofa and the dining table make for a home from home feel, while the kitchen is kitted-out for cooking at home. A great choice for a small family, the second bedroom may be on the smaller side but its bunk beds make the most of the space. If you have work to do, don't worry; with a desk that's best suited for a laptop, you'll have everything you need to get things done. Feeling tired at the desk after writing those emails?  Take a snooze on the daybed behind you to recharge your energy for the rest of the day.
