This is a prime spot for those wanting to experience authentic Madrid – picture traditional tapas bars, thriving markets and Madrilenian architecture. Although it's a bit further from the landmarks – about a twenty-six-minute walk to Plaza Mayor and thirty to Parque de El Retiro – San Bernardo subway station is right around the corner, so you'll be well-connected when you don't feel like walking.

Back at home, the serene and soothing design is complimented by handcrafted furniture, amber-hued accessories and colourful tiles that add some quintessential Spanish flair. Between the Bluetooth speakers and Netflix, you'll be well-entertained during chill nights at home – just sink into the sumptuous sectional and rest weary legs after – while the desk space is perfect for those needing to work from home. From here, you’re within walking distance of restaurants, bars and iconic sights, including the Royal Palace of Madrid, Plaza Mayor and the San Fernando Fine Art Royal Academy. The apartment is modern and practical, though it does lack natural light. A fifth guest can be accommodated on the sofa bed, and the two en-suite bathrooms will help speed mornings along, so you can head out and spend more time exploring all that Madrid has to offer.

Tucked away in a typical Madrid townhouse in Chamberí, Grottino is a great base to explore the city. The streets surrounding this home are part of a neighbourhood that's just as opulent as Salamanca, yet closer to the old centre – which is great for a first-time visitor. Grottino might not be the brightest home in our collection, but a lot of care has been invested in designing the lighting in this small home, so that it resembles an urban chalet. We particularly liked the brick wall in the bathroom and the chic kitchenette.

A splendid base in Madrid, this apartment has everything you might need during your stay. There’s a handy workspace for those in town for business, and a cool, calm vibe – we like the classy coastal palette. The private terrace is a marvellous spot for your morning coffee and sundowners, and the kitchen and dining space mean you can whip up hearty breakfasts to set you up for days of sightseeing. The apartment is in vibrant Trafalgar, close to lively Calle de Fuencarral and all its shops. For explorations further afield, you can hop on the metro at Quevado and San Bernardo, both of which are a short walk away.

The facilities are simple here and you'll only have a kitchenette, but there's a range of restaurants right on your doorstep for whatever you're craving. Storage is tight here and there isn't a proper wall or door to separate the bedroom from the rest of the home, but we think it's a great spot for a couple or solo traveller looking to live like a local for a weekend. While you won't find parking outside, nearby public transport will make sure you get to visit all of Madrid's best bits with ease.

This modern apartment trades in centuries of history for bright and shiny interiors (you’ve got plenty of history outside). Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. When you see as many flats as we do, you learn very quickly to tell which homes have been done up for convenience, and which are a labour of love. Toquilla clearly falls into the latter category. It’s been designed as a whole, with thought and attention put into the schemes, as well as the materials. We particularly liked the concrete pillars and the glass walls, neither of which are especially common in Madrid. The only real complaint we have is the fake plants – They’re understandable for the convenience, but really, most places would be better off without anything.

In the heart of Madrid’s artsiest neighbourhood, Barrio de las Letras, this studio apartment is the perfect base for a cultural city break. First of all, you’ve got the world-famous Prado museum a five-minute walk away, then there’s the sprawling greenery of Retiro Park, just seven minutes on foot. If locally-grown fresh food and lazy lunches of tapas are your thing, head to Antón Martín Market, an eight-minute walk away.

Perhaps stock up and head back to your quiet bolthole, where a compact but fully-equipped kitchen awaits. Floor-to-ceiling French-style windows let the sunshine stream in, so dining at the table inside is a delight during the day. The decor is neutral and soothing in dove-grey and dusky pinks. The best bit? You can take your fresh olives from the market and a bottle of wine up to the shared rooftop terrace where an outdoor lounge with rooftop views awaits.

The apartment is also just in front of the Sabatini Gardens, and 100 metres from Príncipe Pio train station. Plaza de España is only a five-minute walk away, too. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so things might feel a little crowded – you’re unlikely to be spending much time at home though.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

It is noisy, but you're in the heart of the action here. Wander over to El Retiro Park, perfect for getting away from the city with a picnic in the park, and a stroll around the art in the 19th Century Crystal Palace. Chueca, famous for its active nightlife and wonderful vintage tapas bars, is a great place to experience Spanish nightlife. Most importantly, before hitting the bars, seek out a quaint restaurant for delightful tapas. This is all achievable due to the transport links that you can easily tour the entire city with.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.
