This bright and comfortable apartment is just a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace of Madrid. The official residence of the Head of State is open to the public, so you can explore the spot where centuries of Spanish history took place. The apartment is also just in front of the Sabatini Gardens, and 100 metres from Príncipe Pio train station. Plaza de España is only a five-minute walk away, too. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so things might feel a little crowded – you’re unlikely to be spending much time at home though.

Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. When you see as many flats as we do, you learn very quickly to tell which homes have been done up for convenience, and which are a labour of love. Toquilla clearly falls into the latter category. It’s been designed as a whole, with thought and attention put into the schemes, as well as the materials. We particularly liked the concrete pillars and the glass walls, neither of which are especially common in Madrid. The only real complaint we have is the fake plants – They’re understandable for the convenience, but really, most places would be better off without anything.

Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

The City Butterfly

It can be difficult to find accommodation suited to larger groups in the heart of the city, but this smart apartment will tick all the boxes. With plenty of space and flexible sleeping options, this central home is the perfect place to spend some quality time with your guests between your sightseeing excursions. 

You'll love the spacious living area, with double-height ceilings and huge windows that flood the space with natural light. The bike sculptures and selection of houseplants add some quirkiness, while the open-plan layout is perfect for socialising. Uncork a bottle of delicious Spanish wine, and put together some tasty tapas dishes to share at the stylish dining bench. And, when it's time for bed, you can head upstairs to one of the cosy bedrooms, furnished with a blend of vintage and contemporary pieces. 

The famous Puerta del Sol is just an eight-minute walk away from your front door, where you can see famous sights like the Puerta del Sol Clock and the El Oso y El Madroño sculpture. There are plenty of tourist attractions within walking distance of this home. Go for riverside walks at the Parque Madrid Rio nearby, or visit the zoo and amusement park at Casa de Campo. Other places of interest include the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. There are plenty of eateries to sample, too, or head back to this apartment and cook some tapas dishes. All in all, we'd say this home is ideal for a business professional, solo traveller or couple.

With a fantastic address, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, this apartment has a wealth of attractions nearby. The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.
