Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

Malasaña is famous for being slightly outrageous, which is probably why Queen of the Castle is in it. A tour of this home reveals a glamorous hybrid design theme that balances modern baroque-inspired pieces with jungle and safari themes – dear lovers of minimalism, you might want to stay elsewhere. But if gold-coated flora and fauna with an occasional crown-cum-skull ensemble sound like heaven to you, then you'll find Queen of the Castle an absolute delight. Not to mention that you'll be within walking distance to Puerta del Sol and the vibrant neighbourhood of Chueca.

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

We loved the industrial-chic interiors – it’s all poured concrete floors, exposed brick walls and reclaimed timber beams. After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

And of course, the exciting mix of drinking spots and shaded alfresco dining continues. You might be wondering why we’re so interested in this specific spot – well, this is your address.

This modern apartment trades in centuries of history for bright and shiny interiors (you’ve got plenty of history outside). Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. A cushy white sofa and dining chairs around a glass table bring a futuristic feel, while pink orchids contrast with an organic edge.

The host has a great eye for stylish furniture – from the marble kitchen counter to the lavish patterned rugs, you'll love the luxurious feel. Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

Presenting an abundance of natural light, the serene ambience here invites guests to switch off, unwind and recharge – despite the apartment's central location in Madrid. We love the soothing colour scheme of vanilla and macadamia hues in the main living space. After a day of sightseeing, shopping and sampling the local tapas delights, there's nowhere better to kick back and relax. 

And with space to cook and serve up your own aperitifs and meals, you'll have the option of eating out or rustling up your own delicious treats when staying here. Classical styles mix with transparent polymers in a bold attempt to create a contemporary look. It's not for everyone, but with luxurious touches and natural light, it's best suited for urban explorers seeking comfort after a long day.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

Charming and bright, this studio apartment sits just steps away from Sol Metro station, with easy access to the city's biggest and best attractions. On a higher floor of a traditional period building, it comes with character features, modern comforts and bags of natural light from its three Juliet balconies. White walls and wood floors make for a timeless canvas while smart furnishings keep everything very much in the 21st Century.

It's not a huge space but it's neatly laid out with zones for cooking, eating, lounging and sleeping, and there's an immaculate shower room off the sleeping area, making this perfect for a couple, a solo traveller or even a small family. Step outside and this lively area is packed with buzzing tapas bars and some of the city's best shopping. An ideal base for dabbling in these delights, this convenient home is an easy choice.

We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

A stylish blend of rustic and modern, this characterful apartment just a three-minute stroll from Puerta del Sol puts you in a prime position to explore Madrid’s cultural and historic centre. 
 
Inside, exposed beam ceilings, wood floors and colourful decor set a welcoming scene in the open-plan living area. We love the funky art prints decking the walls and the large windows giving way to leafy views. The dining table is perfectly set up here to catch the rays pouring through the glass, over a hearty breakfast before a day of sightseeing, or over a bottle of Spanish red for a celebratory evening meal.
 
The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right.

The rest of the flat is impeccable, too – two glossy bathrooms (one decked out with bold palm leaf wallpaper, another en-suite) feature rainfall showers, the comfortable bedrooms are cosy and pared-back and the bright living area boats a squishy sofa and a lovely Juliet balcony that floods the room with light. We think you'll love calling this apartment home, whether you're in town for a few days or a few weeks.

There are plenty of tourist attractions within walking distance of this home. Go for riverside walks at the Parque Madrid Rio nearby, or visit the zoo and amusement park at Casa de Campo. Other places of interest include the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. There are plenty of eateries to sample, too, or head back to this apartment and cook some tapas dishes. All in all, we'd say this home is ideal for a business professional, solo traveller or couple.

Madrid Daydream

Situated in the central neighbourhood of Malasaña and just a fifteen-minute walk to most attractions, this apartment is a great base from which to explore Madrid. A light and beautiful home, the space combines cosy comfort with a youthful vibe. The living areas have wooden beams and whitewashed walls, but added to the style are pop-art paintings and Coca-Cola memorabilia. Homely touches include vases filled with flowers and the whitest of linen in the bedrooms. In the morning, throw open the tall windows and shutters and let the sounds of the city waft through the rooms. Rustle up breakfast in the kitted-out kitchen, then move into the lounge and sip coffee while looking down on the activity below. There are so many things to do here but there’s no need to rush. Shops, restaurants, bars and attractions are all within walking distance and if you need public transport the metro station is a mere five-minute stroll away. Phew!

We think it's best for couples or solo travellers, though a sofa bed could sleep an additional guest if needed. Locally, indulge in some tasty tapas, soak up some culture at the Prado Museum, or head to Plaza Mayor or Puerta del Sol for a true taste of Madrid.

Speaking of exploring, you’ve got plenty to see and do within easy walking distance, including Puerta del Sol (eight minutes), Plaza Mayor (ten minutes), the Royal Palace of Madrid (fifteen minutes) and the Museo Nacional del Prado (twenty minutes). With your host able to arrange tickets to events and museums, as well as organise trips to nearby towns, cities and wineries, you’re all set to experience Madrid in style.

Our favourite spot, however, is the private balcony with its wide-sweeping views over the city’s rooftops. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast here while catching some morning rays or watch the sunset from your privileged position over an evening glass of Spanish wine. 
 
When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, you’ll find Plaza Mayor less than a minute’s walk away, while bustling Puerta del Sol is a four-minute stroll from your door. Elsewhere, the Royal Palace of Madrid is a ten-minute walk, the famous Museo Nacional del Prado is an eighteen-minute stroll, while leafy El Retiro Park is just over twenty minutes away on foot. 


Mayor Muse

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.

Malasaña is a frequent traveller's favourite. An ever-changing landscape of artisan cafes and local galleries, it's a perfect start to an off-the-beaten-path holiday. In the Flow is a typical Malasaña resident – relaxed and bohemian, with a mixture of high-quality furnishings and flea-market knick-knacks that add to its charm. It might not be a great home if you're particularly tall (due to the slanting ceilings), but it's big, bright, and comfortable.

This home might not be the largest in our collection, but it more than makes up for its petite size with its fabulous location. Situated right on the Plaza de España, it puts you right in the heart of Madrid and makes the perfect place to begin your adventures. 

Step inside, and you'll find a sleek, modern space with parquet flooring and high ceilings. The sofa is great for relaxing in the evening and folds out into a bed, for flexible sleeping arrangements. There's also a little dining table and a chic green-tiled kitchen, where you can whip up tasty meals to refuel after a busy day. And, the stylish blue and mustard yellow colour scheme throughout the apartment creates a sense of calm that will make you feel right at home. 

The Plaza de España right outside the flat is a great place to familiarise yourself with the city – go for a stroll, and soak up the atmosphere of this popular meeting place. Culture fans can take a five-minute walk to the Royal Palace of Madrid to soak up the sense of history, and enjoy a wander through the Jardines de Sabatini afterwards. And, when you get hungry, there's a large selection of nearby restaurants nearby, serving everything from traditional Spanish dishes to Korean meals and Peruvian fare.

Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, which may not be the most comfortable set-up for longer stays.

Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

This apartment in the Malasaña district of Madrid is a true sanctuary in the city. With plenty of style and a location in one of the most exciting areas of the capital, it's the perfect place to kick back and relax between your adventures.
