We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room and the main bedroom is located on the mezzanine level (with no door), but you’ll find all the essentials needed to make it your own. Outside, it’s just a short stroll to local tapas bars, shops and iconic sights like the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid.

Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

What a great location this apartment has in Madrid. The Royal Palace is just seven minutes on foot, while the Almudena Cathedral and the Plaza Mayor are within walking distance, too. As you'd expect from such a central location, you will hear some city noise while staying here. After all that exploring, you can sit in this home's shared courtyard and get your breath back. Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

This is a well-executed home with curated artwork, where special attention has been given to the details. It might not be the biggest home in our collection, but it has a pleasant, bohemian chic vibe that fits in perfectly in the spirit of Malasaña.

Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

The terrace is the first thing that grabs your attention at this fabulous home, housed in a historic building dating back to 1919 – it's the perfect place for a glass (or a pitcher) of sangria. It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

Sail-Sun

Located in Madrid’s central Justicia neighbourhood, this practical studio-style apartment may be short on space, but it offers a prime position from which to soak up the best of the city’s sights. At full capacity, two guests will need to share the sofa bed which will make the living area a little tight. And the lack of natural light and views may not suit those looking for a more scenic stay. But for a base to drop your bags and explore nearby Gran Vía, El Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor, it’s a cosy spot that hits the mark. 


The Long Journey

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

Malasaña is a frequent traveller's favourite. An ever-changing landscape of artisan cafes and local galleries, it's a perfect start to an off-the-beaten-path holiday. In the Flow is a typical Malasaña resident – relaxed and bohemian, with a mixture of high-quality furnishings and flea-market knick-knacks that add to its charm. It might not be a great home if you're particularly tall (due to the slanting ceilings), but it's big, bright, and comfortable.

Style, comfort and spectacular proportions meet at this impressive home in Chueca. Decked out with trendy vintage furniture and striking artworks, the ground-floor apartment is a masterful demonstration of how to fill large spaces. The main living area boasts high ceilings and four French doors that fill it with light – with separate lounging and dining areas, this is likely where you'll spend most of your time.

The kitchen has been given a modern upgrade, fitted with sleek white units and blue-tiled floors. Whip up quick breakfasts to serve at the breakfast bar, and spend sunny evenings trying your hand at Spanish cooking with the double doors thrown open. There's also a separate office with an antique desk, ideal for those hard-working guests who can't quite leave work at home.

Sitting in one of Madrid's liveliest neighbourhoods, this pad is steps away from an eclectic assortment of restaurants and bars that spill onto the pavements. Stock up on fresh produce at the San Antón and Plaza del Dos markets, and venture over to the art triangle – the Prado is just fifteen-minutes – for a culture-filled afternoon.
