We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

Tucked away in the heart of the La Latina neighbourhood, this contemporary home is an ideal base for friends or family on a Madrid getaway. Sure, as a party of five, one person will sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but it’s a small price to pay for this home’s location. Sightseeing comes easily here – you’re a mere kilometre from the iconic Prado Museum, and with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor within easy reach, shopping and sampling some authentic Spanish cuisine is a must.

We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

Keep in mind that two guests will be sleeping on the living room sofa bed here, so it does lack some privacy. And if you’re visiting with little ones, your host can provide a cot upon request.

This chic apartment has two large shopping centres within a few hundred metres – this is a great base if you’re hoping to indulge in some retail therapy in Madrid. It’s in the heart of the city, with the Puerta del Sol just a few steps away. The apartment is modern and minimalist, with a tranquil vibe that means you can unwind when you’re not out seeing the sights. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, which may not be the most comfortable set-up for longer stays.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

You'll also find several museums and theatres in the surrounding area, and if you fancy exploring another part of the city then simply hop on the metro at Sol station – it's just a couple of minutes away.

A stylish blend of rustic and modern, this characterful apartment just a three-minute stroll from Puerta del Sol puts you in a prime position to explore Madrid’s cultural and historic centre. 
 
Inside, exposed beam ceilings, wood floors and colourful decor set a welcoming scene in the open-plan living area. We love the funky art prints decking the walls and the large windows giving way to leafy views. The dining table is perfectly set up here to catch the rays pouring through the glass, over a hearty breakfast before a day of sightseeing, or over a bottle of Spanish red for a celebratory evening meal.
 
The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right. 
 
When you’re ready to venture out for a day of fun, you’ll find plenty to see and do within easy walking distance. Make your way to nearby Puerta del Sol, or head to Plaza Mayor – one of the city’s most famous squares lined with restaurants. With this apartment you get the best of both worlds – it’s situated between the traditional Chamberí district and the vibrant Malasaña neighbourhood. The Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Condeduque is a short stroll away, as is the Liria Palace. There’s a wide array of eateries within walking distance as well, offering cuisines from Spanish to Japanese and Persian. We love the large open-plan living space at this home – this room also sleeps guests three and four on a sofa bed. There’s a desk here too for when you need to work while staying in Spain’s capital city.

Chamberí Light

Based around an open living area, Peaks & Valleys is well proportioned and generally a sociable space. It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.


Peaks & Valleys

Malasaña is a frequent traveller's favourite. An ever-changing landscape of artisan cafes and local galleries, it's a perfect start to an off-the-beaten-path holiday. In the Flow is a typical Malasaña resident – relaxed and bohemian, with a mixture of high-quality furnishings and flea-market knick-knacks that add to its charm. It might not be a great home if you're particularly tall (due to the slanting ceilings), but it's big, bright, and comfortable.
