The great thing about living so close to a park is that it can feel like your private garden (albeit one you've generously allowed everybody else to visit). This elegant apartment sits just across the street from El Parque del Buen Retiro, an expansive green space in the heart of Madrid filled with gardens, fountains and galleries — Palacio de Cristal is only fifteen minutes' walk away, for example. It would be fair to say that the design choices were inspired by this proximity to nature, with a tastefully painted tropical motif on the wall of the living area and an enclosed glass balcony off the main bedroom filled with plants. Surprisingly, this isn't the only balcony, with another giving wonderful views of the park — who wouldn't want to wake up to that sight? There's an excellent kitchen with a couple of stools so you can hang out and chat while you're cooking, and it's not short of equipment so you can really go to town if you feel like throwing a mini dinner party. Naturally, you will hear some city noise here. This south-facing apartment is light and bright, and we love the Juliet balcony off the open-plan living room with its leafy Ayala Street views. There’s not much food preparation space in the kitchen, but that said, it’s well-equipped, and you can always let your host arrange for a private chef to cook some authentic tapas dishes.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

It might not be the biggest home in our collection, but it has a pleasant, bohemian chic vibe that fits in perfectly in the spirit of Malasaña.

We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

When you embark on a city break, you want to be close to the central hub of the city. This snug apartment caters to your thirst for adventure – it's just moments from Plaza Mayor, Plaza del Sol in Madrid and other iconic landmarks. 

Despite its central location, the apartment maintains a peaceful hum at all times. When sipping your coffee in the morning or relaxing on the sofa in the evening, you won't believe you're in the heart of a flourishing metropolis. 

Start your days admiring the striking buildings that are on your doorstep. Between each landmark, stop off for some paella, tapas or risotto, complemented by the famous Spanish beers. You can also treat yourself to a jug of sangria if you're feeling a more fruity vibe.

Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two. 

The Bohemian Retreat

This modern apartment has an address within walking distance of the Madrid Río. Here, you’ll find a large urban park built along the Manzanares River offering nature, sports, culture and a beach. There are also plenty of tapas bars, cafes, restaurants and shops to explore in and around this residential neighbourhood. Or there’s a well-equipped kitchen here if you prefer to eat at home. If you’re here during the summer months, you’ll be glad to know there’s air conditioning, too.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.
