The great thing about living so close to a park is that it can feel like your private garden (albeit one you've generously allowed everybody else to visit). This elegant apartment sits just across the street from El Parque del Buen Retiro, an expansive green space in the heart of Madrid filled with gardens, fountains and galleries — Palacio de Cristal is only fifteen minutes' walk away, for example. It would be fair to say that the design choices were inspired by this proximity to nature, with a tastefully painted tropical motif on the wall of the living area and an enclosed glass balcony off the main bedroom filled with plants. Surprisingly, this isn't the only balcony, with another giving wonderful views of the park — who wouldn't want to wake up to that sight? This unique, super stylish home stands opposite Madrid's beautiful Retiro Park, in the (somewhat confusingly named) Ibiza neighbourhood. In a traditional building but fully modernised inside, you'll have that perfect mix of period features and contemporary furnishings – think high ceilings, tall Juliet balconies and wood floors. There's a huge, structural steel beam running through the centre of the open-layout living and dining space and it just fits in with the styling perfectly, acting as a handy room divider. On one side you'll find the cosy sofa, desk space and a wall of shelves, while the other is reserved for relaxed dining at home on trendy chairs made from metal and bamboo.

There's an excellent kitchen with a couple of stools so you can hang out and chat while you're cooking, and it's not short of equipment so you can really go to town if you feel like throwing a mini dinner party. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

You couldn’t get closer to Madrid’s leafy El Retiro Park – it’s situated on an idyllic street that leads right off the park itself. Look out your window for luscious tree views or walk a few steps and you’ll be surrounded by roses in The Rosaleda.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

Museum lovers will be in their element at this stylish abode in Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art.
