This chic and attractive apartment has everything you might need for a comfortable city break. It’s located in Chueca, one of Madrid’s liveliest neighbourhoods, full of cafes, boutiques, and bars. Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two.

There's a reason Salamanca is one of Madrid's most sought-after neighbourhoods. With its gourmet eateries, world-renowned museums and luxury boutiques lining the Golden Mile, the area offers something for everyone. Just on the cusp of this swanky postcode is this apartment. The size is ideal for couples and solo travellers, but the option of a single sofa bed keeps sleeping arrangements flexible. Netflix and a Playstation have rainy days covered, and although it's not the most exciting home, we like the design – particularly the colourful wallpaper in the bedroom.

The terrace is the first thing that grabs your attention at this fabulous home, housed in a historic building dating back to 1919 – it's the perfect place for a glass (or a pitcher) of sangria. It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

The terrace is the first thing that strikes you about Sail-Shade, so let’s not dwell on that. The living room is lovely, and the rest of the place is very comfortable, if not particularly ground-breaking. The atmosphere is almost like a hotel – you have both a twenty-four-hour reception, and a daily cleaning service – but that also goes the other way. The flat is missing some of the character that you’d expect if it were actually someone’s home.

Bright, modern and boasting incredible views over the city from its large picture windows, this apartment between Madrid’s Salamanca and Chamberí neighbourhoods is an ideal base for those looking to make the most out of the city’s cultural sights.

This apartment in stately Eixample is a great base for Barcelona exploring. All your needs are covered here, with a kitchen perfect for light meals and even an office space if you have work to do. There's plenty of light throughout thanks to the French doors, and the Juliette balconies are a nice touch too. Throw in two bathrooms – ideal for getting everyone out the door quickly – and you're well-poised to explore the city. Urgell Station is a few minutes away, and there's a bus stop practically on your doorstep.

The New Playhouse

Looking directly out over Plaza de Chueca, Cuadro is in the middle of the action. The two balconies bring loads of natural light into the living room, and they have double glazing, which keeps out the majority of the noise (you might still get a bit though – such is the nature of the centre of Madrid). It would be nice to have some sort of view from the bedrooms, but having the windows facing internally does mean that they’re calmer than the living room, and in the long run, that’s more important.

Situated in cool Chueca with its vibrant LGBTQ+ scene and independent boutiques, galleries and bars – this apartment has a fabulous address. There's an array of interesting museums to visit here, including Museo del Romanticismo, a five-minute stroll. Or head to Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh and Lichtenstein, just under a fifteen-minute walk. If you need a pit stop, have a seat at one of the cafes on Plaza de Chueca and when you've rested, take a three-minute wander back to this stylish home.

Inside, we love the little design details, such as the geometric and stripey wallpapers, as well as the canine and modern artworks. Grey and mustard furnishings, along with plants and vases of flowers, create a homely vibe. Whip up a refreshing drink with the juicer or make some gazpacho for dinner in the modern kitchenette. This place is the ideal Madrid bolthole for two couples or business professionals.

With a fantastic address, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, this apartment has a wealth of attractions nearby. The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.

Plaza París Haven

Situated in the central neighbourhood of Malasaña and just a fifteen-minute walk to most attractions, this apartment is a great base from which to explore Madrid. A light and beautiful home, the space combines cosy comfort with a youthful vibe. The living areas have wooden beams and whitewashed walls, but added to the style are pop-art paintings and Coca-Cola memorabilia. Homely touches include vases filled with flowers and the whitest of linen in the bedrooms. In the morning, throw open the tall windows and shutters and let the sounds of the city waft through the rooms. Rustle up breakfast in the kitted-out kitchen, then move into the lounge and sip coffee while looking down on the activity below. There are so many things to do here but there’s no need to rush. Shops, restaurants, bars and attractions are all within walking distance and if you need public transport the metro station is a mere five-minute stroll away. Phew!

The home is in Chueca, where you’re just a couple of minutes walk from Gran-Via, Madrid’s most renowned street. When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish. We're not going to lie – the kitchen, in particular, is pretty compact, but with Madrid's many eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll do much cooking.

Your hosts have decorated it minimally but with a stylish hand – the highlight for us is the Scandi-inspired dining set. Look forward to retiring to the tucked-away bedroom nook after a busy day of landmark-hopping.

And speaking of landmarks, you won't have to travel far to see Barcelona's best. The beautifully-manicured El Retiro Park, complete with a rose garden and boating lake, is just a leisurely fifteen-minute stroll away. Walk through the triumphal Puerta de Alcalá to enter and enjoy a lazy afternoon in the gardens. From here, the world-famous Prado is within easy reach. Marvel at some of the country's best-known artworks before finding a traditional tapas bar nearby to while away the evening.

If you’re after easy living in the heart of a cultural hotspot, this chic apartment is right for you. The building's located in Madrid’s charming and vibrant Justicia neighbourhood, albeit on a quiet street so you slip in and out of the urban hustle and bustle as and when you please.

Inside, the overarching impression is one of stylish simplicity. Muted grey walls and wooden floorings are a classy combination and work particularly well with the vintage framed artwork and modern furnishings. We're also impressed by the sleek finishes and generous amount of surface space in the minimalist kitchen — here, you can quite easily take a break from the city's restaurants for a night.

Take a glance out of the large windows in the living room and bedroom, and you're greeted with beautiful views across the city, which should inspire you to head and explore. El Retiro Park is only a fifteen-minute walk away, while there are also seven museums that can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot. If you want to feel the wind in your hair as you get to know Madrid, there are also bikes for hire just outside the building.

It’s worth noting there is no private parking, but you will find great public transport links – making it easy to explore the beaches along the coast. There is also a sunroom with a dedicated desk for remote workers, and the main bedroom has an ensuite bathroom – adding a wonderful sense of privacy.

Our favourite spot, however, is the private balcony with its views over the city’s rooftops. Sit here with your morning coffee while catching some Spanish rays or take in breathtaking sunset views over a glass of Spanish wine. Outside of your home, your Chueca locale is packed with cosy sidewalk cafes, tapas bars, restaurants and a vibrant bar scene, as well as boutiques, and popular markets like San Antón (a ten-minute walk) and Plaza del Dos de Mayo (a four-minute walk). Elsewhere there’s plenty of retail therapy to enjoy along Gran Vía (a fifteen-minute walk) and both the Royal Palace of Madrid and El Retiro Park are walkable in twenty-four minutes.

A district known for its grand mansions, foreign embassies, and art galleries, this home is certainly not out of place here with its stunning corniced ceilings, hardwood floors and French doors giving way to Juliet balconies. Yet for all its elegance, there’s an air of boho charm here too with many of its design elements reflecting Southeast Asian influences, from the large fans on the living room’s walls to the plethora of leafy houseplants. You’ll find several desk spaces here should you need to catch up on work, while relaxation comes easy in the beautifully dressed bedrooms with their rattan and wood accents. Those who want to rev up the action can head to the building’s communal gym or simply take to the streets for a full day of sightseeing – you’ve got plenty of the city’s must-visits within easy reach. Spend an afternoon strolling through El Retiro Park (a twenty-minute walk), go shopping along Gran Vía (a fifteen-minute walk) and soak up some culture at the Sorolla Museum (also fifteen minutes on foot from your door).

That being said, we recommend less work and a lot more play here. Head out and explore the elegant streets below, filled with art galleries, trendy boutiques and Parisian-style cafés. Fill your days with shopping and flat-white sipping along the iconic Gran Vía boulevard nearby, taking in the striking neoclassical architecture as you go.
