Naturally, you will hear some city noise here. This south-facing apartment is light and bright, and we love the Juliet balcony off the open-plan living room with its leafy Ayala Street views. There’s not much food preparation space in the kitchen, but that said, it’s well-equipped, and you can always let your host arrange for a private chef to cook some authentic tapas dishes.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

What a fabulous location this refurbished apartment has – Puerta del Sol, one of the best-known squares in the city, is just a two-minute stroll away. Or, a five-minute walk will take you to one of Madrid's most famous streets, Gran Vía. Watch a production at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía or have lunch at one of its many eateries. Despite being located in the heart of Malasaña, Autumn Jungle is tucked away on a quiet street. Walking to Plaza Mayor or Palacio Real will be a breeze, but the nearby streets of Madrid's trendiest neighbourhood will have you stopping in art galleries and cosy bars along the way. This is a well-executed home with curated artwork, where special attention has been given to the details. It might not be the biggest home in our collection, but it has a pleasant, bohemian chic vibe that fits in perfectly in the spirit of Malasaña.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

This is an elaborate home that impresses with the broad strokes as well as fine ones. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

Modern, compact and centrally located, this apartment is the perfect landing pad for those always on the go. Inside, it’s stripped-back and minimalistic with funky patterned walls, tiles and textiles adding interest to the spaces. Wake up feeling refreshed in the neat bedrooms before starting the day with a quick breakfast put together in your fully-equipped kitchen. Once you’ve finished your coffee, head out and explore your surroundings. 

Begin with a trip to the Prado Museum then enjoy a picnic in sunny Retiro Park, a short walk from your doorstep. Mosey over to the Royal Palace or shop ‘til you drop along the Gra Vía. The size is ideal for couples and solo travellers, but the option of a single sofa bed keeps sleeping arrangements flexible. Netflix and a Playstation have rainy days covered, and although it's not the most exciting home, we like the design – particularly the colourful wallpaper in the bedroom.

You’re on the edge of the square where pavement cafés spill out onto the cobbles and the porticoed buildings date back to the 16th century when this was the centre of Old Madrid. The surrounded streets are packed with late-night tapas joints and buzzing bars. Or, head to the fresh produce and street food market, Mercado de San Miguel, a three-minute walk away to bring back some tasty local treats to your bijou abode.

It may be a studio, but the full kitchen is tucked away from the bedroom and living area in its own, modern enclave. So you can turn fresh veg, olives and artisan goods into a feast for two with ease. As you'd expect from such a central location, you will hear some city noise while staying here. After all that exploring, you can sit in this home's shared courtyard and get your breath back. Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.
