Although this home is slightly further away from the most important sights, Plaza Mayor is still within easy reach by metro. Instead, this home is only a short walk away from Retiro, Madrid's largest park–well-suited for someone who appreciates a quieter neighbourhood. The Peacock and the Steed has is an eclectic home that mixes minimalist design in the kitchen and living room with more classical influences in the bedroom. Our favourite is the freestanding bath and the original hydraulic tiles from the seventies.

The location means there's potential for some noise, and you won't find much parking, but we think it's in a great spot from which to get around the city. That being said, the basics are well executed here too, including the sleek white-grey kitchen where you can easily knock up a quick bite to eat and the tasteful bedrooms, each with an en-suite. After spending days having your mind opened at the nearby museums, wandering around plazas admiring the stately buildings and dining at some of the most celebrated restaurants in the city, you'll see why this local area remains to this day one of the most coveted addresses among Madrilenians.

The nearby buildings, which you can see from the comfort of your huge bay windows, boast typical townhouse decoration, and there are lots of fantastic cafes nearby. Although this house is simply decorated, every item feels like it's in the right place, creating a coherent modern look. Aside from the natural light in the communal area, we really enjoyed the cosy study between the bedrooms.

Ideal for groups seeking a city pad with all the mod cons, this pad also features a semi-enclosed balcony for sharing post-sightseeing drinks. While we can't fault the apartment's sophisticated interiors, the last two bedrooms feel a little compact compared to the main bedroom, but there's still everything you need for a comfortable night's sleep. The three dedicated desk spaces will be handy, too, for anyone planning to work or study.

Live like a local in the neighbourhood of Ventas. The Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is within walking distance, and there are various eateries and bars to enjoy. The area is well connected to the urban bus and metro transport network, which is handy, as most of the city's attractions are a ride away. There's a small balcony, although you may have to work out a rota system as the table here only seats two, but the dining table inside seats six people. There's also a desk in the main bedroom if you need to work from home. All in all, if you don't mind being away from the action, this is a lovely base for your Madrid adventure.

Alternatively, the iconic Plaza del Dos de Mayo is a fifteen-minute wander. Here, you'll find plenty of bars, as well as a lively weekend market for fresh produce.  

Take some goodies back to this elegant apartment and whip up a bocadillo de calamares (calamari sandwich) in the sleek, white kitchen and enjoy it at the dining table with its plush green velvet chairs. We love the French doors to the balcony – they allow so much light in, and the views are fantastic. Chueca, famous for its active nightlife and wonderful vintage tapas bars, is a great place to experience Spanish nightlife. Most importantly, before hitting the bars, seek out a quaint restaurant for delightful tapas. This is all achievable due to the transport links that you can easily tour the entire city with.

If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.
