This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

You’re also just a few steps from Sol metro station, so the whole city is at your fingertips. Inside, you’ll find a modern open-plan space with a balcony and a dining area to share leisurely meals. Keep in mind that two guests will be sleeping on the living room sofa bed here, so it does lack some privacy. And if you’re visiting with little ones, your host can provide a cot upon request.

Sol Retreat

This apartment is located on iconic Sevilla Street, right in the heart of Madrid. You’ve got all the city’s must-sees, including Museo del Prado, Palacio Real, and Plaza Mayor, on your doorstep. And if you want to venture further afield, Sevilla metro station is at the end of the road. Most of the windows in the home are skylights so you won’t get much of a view from here, but the open-plan living space has everything you’ll need, including a handy breakfast bar and comfortable lounge area. The second bedroom is very cosy – we think it’s best suited to a child or someone travelling light.

The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right.

Back at this apartment, we love the French doors that open out onto Juliet balconies. There's a separate, compact but well-equipped kitchen for creating some tasty tapas, too. Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

This is a loud and proud home, filled with bold art and eclectic furniture. Large abstract paintings sit comfortably next to custom art prints and photography, revealing the hosts' love for shapes and stripes. Although it offers more of a mixture of modern and classical styles than a clear direction, this home has a mid-Century Hollywood feel to it. It's not the most typical Spanish home, but each of the rooms is designed around a coherent theme and colour scheme. Apart from the light and space – both abundant – this home has a lovely collection of lamps in all shapes and sizes. 

The Ginkgo Leaf

Located just outside Plaza Mayor’s arches, this ideally located apartment is the perfect base for those looking to soak up Madrid's vibrant, buzzing centre. 

Blending rustic charm with stylish modern accents, this home feels wonderfully Spanish. We love the exposed beamed ceilings and the wood floors, as well as the houseplants and colourful rug in the living area that add additional characterful flair. 
 
The bedroom is elegantly pared back, offering a comfortable night’s sleep, while the dining area invites celebratory homemade tapas feasts when you’re not out sampling the local dining scene. 
 
Our favourite spot, however, is the private balcony with its wide-sweeping views over the city’s rooftops. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast here while catching some morning rays or watch the sunset from your privileged position over an evening glass of Spanish wine. 
 
When you’re ready to venture out for some sightseeing, you’ll find Plaza Mayor less than a minute’s walk away, while bustling Puerta del Sol is a four-minute stroll from your door. Elsewhere, the Royal Palace of Madrid is a ten-minute walk, the famous Museo Nacional del Prado is an eighteen-minute stroll, while leafy El Retiro Park is just over twenty minutes away on foot.

Right in the heart of Madrid, this contemporary apartment is in a top-notch location for exploring. Step out the front door and you'll be straight into the city's hustle and bustle – buzzing Gran Vía is two minutes on foot, with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor walkable in under ten. Whether you fancy sightseeing, shopping or sampling the local cuisine, this is the place to be, with restaurants, boutiques and all the landmarks within easy. 

When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish. We're not going to lie – the kitchen, in particular, is pretty compact, but with Madrid's many eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll do much cooking.

Although the apartment isn't especially large, the owners have made excellent use of the space. The spotlessly clean and dynamic living room is dotted with stylish – but not overbearing – design pieces, and the mirror in the kitchen makes it feel dramatically more spacious. And, with an exceptionally fast wifi speed, a brand new air-conditioning unit, and five individual balconies (yes, really!) facing onto sunny Cadiz street, it's easy to see why guests keep coming back.

Located on a pedestrianised street in the heart of Madrid, this apartment is perfect for those who want to check out the city’s most famous sights. The Royal Palace, Plaza de España and Plaza Mayor are within easy walking distance, and the Sol metro station is nearby for trips outside the centre. Back at home, there is a private terrace for alfresco dining (although it's a little dated) and two cosy bedrooms. The curtains, however, don’t fully block out the sunlight, so we recommend packing an eye mask if you plan to enjoy a lie-in.

You can enjoy the best of Madrid from this chic, central apartment. It’s in the heart of the city, close to all the key attractions, including Plaza Mayor. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, so you’ll never be far from your next great meal, and the apartment has a well-equipped kitchen and dining table for those wanting to dine in. You’ll also have an attractive living room to enjoy, and a balcony where you can watch the world go by. This apartment is perfect for a family or group of friends.

Make yourself comfortable on the elegant couch and plan your itinerary – we recommend starting with a trip to the Royal Palace of Madrid. 

Spend warm afternoons moseying around the city, stopping for a leisurely lunch in an old-school tapas bar, then brushing up on your art history knowledge at the Prado Museum, a twenty-minute walk from your doorstep. After kicking back in El Retiro park, shop along the Gran Via or catch a Flamenco show in a long-standing tablao.

This apartment is situated in the Huertas-Cortés neighbourhood, with its narrow, elegant streets and beautiful architecture. You’ll find a variety of museums as well as plenty of dining options within walking distance, along with co-working spaces. Not that you’ll probably need them as this home has several desks if you need to work while away. An absolute highlight of this home, we think, is the private courtyard garden with its vine-clad walls – the perfect spot to relax after a busy day.

Literary Legacy

Location-wise, this home is a ten out of ten. Beautiful Plaza Mayor is just around the corner, which means that many of Madrid’s most famous attractions are all within walking distance. We also loved the design – pastel-hued chicness and a feminine take on Scandinavian style in one, it’s the epitome of stylish, casual luxury. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but we’re not going to hold that against an otherwise terrific home. Plus, there are so many restaurants nearby that you might not even want to eat at home...

Radiante

A literal stone’s throw from Madrid’s beating heart (the Plaza Mayor), it doesn’t get more central than this apartment. You’re on the edge of the square where pavement cafés spill out onto the cobbles and the porticoed buildings date back to the 16th century when this was the centre of Old Madrid. The surrounded streets are packed with late-night tapas joints and buzzing bars. Or, head to the fresh produce and street food market, Mercado de San Miguel, a three-minute walk away to bring back some tasty local treats to your bijou abode.

It may be a studio, but the full kitchen is tucked away from the bedroom and living area in its own, modern enclave. So you can turn fresh veg, olives and artisan goods into a feast for two with ease. The living area is pristine white and brightened further by sunlight streaming through traditional, French-style windows. Open these up to create a Juliet-style balcony, perfect for people-watching in the buzzing square below.

This minimalist home with a breath of rustic chic is located right only minutes away from the famous Puerta del Sol on one end, and Plaza Mayor on the other – perfect for those in search of that perfect location. This home was built with comfort and functionality in mind, but there are a few design touches that make us excited to have it in our collection. We loved the master bedroom's cosy balcony and the futons in the living room.

This cosy apartment has everything you need from a city stay – it's blessed with floods of natural light, it exudes a peaceful vibe and it's situated right in the heart of Madrid. Homely and authentic, it's the perfect place to explore the Spanish capital.

Wander out of the building and you'll almost immediately reach the vibrant Plaza Mayor, one of Madrid's most enlivened areas. Stop off for tapas, paella or risotto, complemented by a fresh glass of sangria. Keep strolling through the centre and you'll feel energised by the infectious fervour of the city. 

Spend your days at your own pace, whether it's visiting the fascinating museums, marvelling at chic artwork in the galleries or just perusing the charming streets. Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.

This chic apartment has two large shopping centres within a few hundred metres – this is a great base if you’re hoping to indulge in some retail therapy in Madrid. It’s in the heart of the city, with the Puerta del Sol just a few steps away. The apartment is modern and minimalist, with a tranquil vibe that means you can unwind when you’re not out seeing the sights. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, which may not be the most comfortable set-up for longer stays.

While this home won’t be winning any awards for modern design, its central locale makes it an ideal base for those looking to make the most out of Madrid’s cultural hotspots. Close to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace of Madrid, you’ve got some of the city’s most iconic sights within easy reach on foot, and plenty of nearby transport links to take you across the wider area. If art brings you to Madrid, you’ll find yourself at home amongst the apartment’s many prints and posters, while the bathtub feels like a good way to end a busy day of sightseeing, maybe even with a glass of Spanish wine in hand. 


El Clásico

Several of the original architectural elements in Strength of Spirit have been preserved, so that the flat keeps some character and a sense of place, and this pays off. It might seem like a slightly nebulous point, but the fact that it feels Madrileño makes the guest feel at ease – there’s nothing jarring about the space. There are a few more modern features though, like the sleek, black kitchen, which adds a bit of variety, but these feel a bit beside the point. There’s nothing wrong with them, but nor do they add a tonne.
