Blending rustic charm with stylish modern accents, this home feels wonderfully Spanish. We love the exposed beamed ceilings and the wood floors, as well as the houseplants and colourful rug in the living area that add additional characterful flair. 
 
The bedroom is elegantly pared back, offering a comfortable night’s sleep, while the dining area invites celebratory homemade tapas feasts when you’re not out sampling the local dining scene. 
 
Our favourite spot, however, is the private balcony with its wide-sweeping views over the city’s rooftops. Enjoy an alfresco breakfast here while catching some morning rays or watch the sunset from your privileged position over an evening glass of Spanish wine.

What a fabulous location this refurbished apartment has – Puerta del Sol, one of the best-known squares in the city, is just a two-minute stroll away. Or, a five-minute walk will take you to one of Madrid's most famous streets, Gran Vía. Watch a production at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía or have lunch at one of its many eateries. Alternatively, the iconic Plaza del Dos de Mayo is a fifteen-minute wander. Here, you'll find plenty of bars, as well as a lively weekend market for fresh produce.  

Take some goodies back to this elegant apartment and whip up a bocadillo de calamares (calamari sandwich) in the sleek, white kitchen and enjoy it at the dining table with its plush green velvet chairs. We love the French doors to the balcony – they allow so much light in, and the views are fantastic. This is an elaborate home that impresses with the broad strokes as well as fine ones. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

A stylish blend of rustic and modern, this characterful apartment just a three-minute stroll from Puerta del Sol puts you in a prime position to explore Madrid’s cultural and historic centre. 
 
Inside, exposed beam ceilings, wood floors and colourful decor set a welcoming scene in the open-plan living area. We love the funky art prints decking the walls and the large windows giving way to leafy views. The dining table is perfectly set up here to catch the rays pouring through the glass, over a hearty breakfast before a day of sightseeing, or over a bottle of Spanish red for a celebratory evening meal.
 
The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right.

The terrace is the first thing that grabs your attention at this fabulous home, housed in a historic building dating back to 1919 – it's the perfect place for a glass (or a pitcher) of sangria. It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

Or, head to the fresh produce and street food market, Mercado de San Miguel, a three-minute walk away to bring back some tasty local treats to your bijou abode.

It may be a studio, but the full kitchen is tucked away from the bedroom and living area in its own, modern enclave. So you can turn fresh veg, olives and artisan goods into a feast for two with ease. The living area is pristine white and brightened further by sunlight streaming through traditional, French-style windows. Open these up to create a Juliet-style balcony, perfect for people-watching in the buzzing square below.

From the living area, the striking staircase leads up to the bed, seemingly floating on a mezzanine. Soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the city and walk to iconic locations like La Plaza Mayor, La Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace. The nearby metro also provides great connections to the rest of the city.

Several of the original architectural elements in Strength of Spirit have been preserved, so that the flat keeps some character and a sense of place, and this pays off. It might seem like a slightly nebulous point, but the fact that it feels Madrileño makes the guest feel at ease – there’s nothing jarring about the space. There are a few more modern features though, like the sleek, black kitchen, which adds a bit of variety, but these feel a bit beside the point. There’s nothing wrong with them, but nor do they add a tonne.

Situated in Puerta del Sol, this central apartment invites you to experience the joys of Madrid with ease. From here, you'll be within walking distance of Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace of Madrid and Museo Nacional del Prado. You’re also just a few steps from Sol metro station, so the whole city is at your fingertips. Inside, you’ll find a modern open-plan space with a balcony and a dining area to share leisurely meals. Keep in mind that two guests will be sleeping on the living room sofa bed here, so it does lack some privacy. And if you’re visiting with little ones, your host can provide a cot upon request.

It’s in the heart of the city, with the Puerta del Sol just a few steps away. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, which may not be the most comfortable set-up for longer stays.

The terrace is the first thing that strikes you about Sail-Shade, so let’s not dwell on that. The living room is lovely, and the rest of the place is very comfortable, if not particularly ground-breaking. The atmosphere is almost like a hotel – you have both a twenty-four-hour reception, and a daily cleaning service – but that also goes the other way. The flat is missing some of the character that you’d expect if it were actually someone’s home.

Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

This is a loud and proud home, filled with bold art and eclectic furniture. Large abstract paintings sit comfortably next to custom art prints and photography, revealing the hosts' love for shapes and stripes. Although it offers more of a mixture of modern and classical styles than a clear direction, this home has a mid-Century Hollywood feel to it. It's not the most typical Spanish home, but each of the rooms is designed around a coherent theme and colour scheme. Apart from the light and space – both abundant – this home has a lovely collection of lamps in all shapes and sizes.

Located on a pedestrianised street in the heart of Madrid, this apartment is perfect for those who want to check out the city’s most famous sights. The Royal Palace, Plaza de España and Plaza Mayor are within easy walking distance, and the Sol metro station is nearby for trips outside the centre. Back at home, there is a private terrace for alfresco dining (although it's a little dated) and two cosy bedrooms. The curtains, however, don’t fully block out the sunlight, so we recommend packing an eye mask if you plan to enjoy a lie-in.

Although the apartment isn't especially large, the owners have made excellent use of the space. The spotlessly clean and dynamic living room is dotted with stylish – but not overbearing – design pieces, and the mirror in the kitchen makes it feel dramatically more spacious. And, with an exceptionally fast wifi speed, a brand new air-conditioning unit, and five individual balconies (yes, really!) facing onto sunny Cadiz street, it's easy to see why guests keep coming back.

Right in the heart of Madrid, this contemporary apartment is in a top-notch location for exploring. Step out the front door and you'll be straight into the city's hustle and bustle – buzzing Gran Vía is two minutes on foot, with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor walkable in under ten. Whether you fancy sightseeing, shopping or sampling the local cuisine, this is the place to be, with restaurants, boutiques and all the landmarks within easy. 

When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish. We're not going to lie – the kitchen, in particular, is pretty compact, but with Madrid's many eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll do much cooking.

Back at this apartment, housed in a building dating back to 1880, this newly refurbished home is the ideal Madrid bolthole. Open the French doors to the balcony, relax on the comfy chaise sofa and take the weight off your feet after all that sightseeing. We love the vintage trunk in the living room and the stylish bathroom with its brass tap and ornate mirror. This minimalist home with a breath of rustic chic is located right only minutes away from the famous Puerta del Sol on one end, and Plaza Mayor on the other – perfect for those in search of that perfect location. This home was built with comfort and functionality in mind, but there are a few design touches that make us excited to have it in our collection. We loved the master bedroom's cosy balcony and the futons in the living room.

This modern apartment trades in centuries of history for bright and shiny interiors (you’ve got plenty of history outside). Naturally, the living space features two huge glass doors leading you to a private balcony facing on to the celebrated square. If you want to be right at the centre of the action in Madrid, then this is the apartment for you. Situated right on Calle Mayor – one of the city's best-known streets – it's within easy reach of all the delights the capital city has to offer. 

The home itself is an elegant space filled with charm, and the high ceilings and tall windows mean there is plenty of natural light. The host has a great eye for stylish furniture – from the marble kitchen counter to the lavish patterned rugs, you'll love the luxurious feel. Practise your Spanish-style cooking in the kitchen before serving your culinary creations to your guests at the gorgeous dining table. Then, after dinner, open up a bottle of Rioja and head out to the private balcony to watch the world go by from above. 

There are also plenty of restaurants nearby, serving everything from traditional tapas to ramen and tacos. Madrid's historic square, Plaza Mayor, is just a two-minute walk away from your front door, as is the famous Puerta del Sol. You'll also find several museums and theatres in the surrounding area, and if you fancy exploring another part of the city then simply hop on the metro at Sol station – it's just a couple of minutes away.

Boasting a privileged location on Madrid’s famous Gran Vía, this elegant apartment puts countless of the city’s most famous sights on your doorstep. It’s not just its incredibly central locale that caught our eye, however. Plasterwork ceilings, marble detailing and a whopping eleven Juliet balconies make this pad stand out from the crowd. Beautifully dressed bedrooms with bespoke wallpaper add to the luxe feeling here too. And did we mention the en-suite’s Turkish-style sauna shower? Of course, being in the beating heart of the capital means noise is to be expected. But we think it’s a small price to pay for a home as striking as this one.

Equidistant to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, The Sun and Stone is perfectly located for those who want to explore Madrid on foot. This home is a typically modern city affair with a minimalist aesthetic and lots of natural light. The thing we liked most about The Sun and Stone is that it's been designed with the guest in mind. The kitchen island is great for socialising, there's ample storage space the communal areas are both inviting and comfortable – basically, an all-rounder.

Location-wise, this home is a ten out of ten. Beautiful Plaza Mayor is just around the corner, which means that many of Madrid’s most famous attractions are all within walking distance. We also loved the design – pastel-hued chicness and a feminine take on Scandinavian style in one, it’s the epitome of stylish, casual luxury. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but we’re not going to hold that against an otherwise terrific home. Plus, there are so many restaurants nearby that you might not even want to eat at home...

Housed in a beautiful, historic building dating back to the 17th century and sitting directly on Madrid’s famous Plaza Mayor, this stylish penthouse apartment is a treat for those looking for a sunny, central stay. 
 
Inside, elegant white interiors set a striking first impression in the open-plan living area, with pops of green in the houseplants and a glossy, modern finish to the furnishings. The bedroom is a chic retreat with a small balcony giving way to Plaza Mayor views, but for truly outstanding views, we recommend climbing the stairs to the private rooftop terrace. 
 
Equipped with loungers and Acapulco chairs, this sun trap is the ideal spot to catch some rays over your morning coffee or watch the sunset over the Plaza, a glass of Spanish wine in hand. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, you need only walk out your front door to be standing within one of the city’s most iconic squares, or stroll three minutes to the San Miguel Market for delectable tapas. You’re also a ten-minute stroll from both Gran Vía and the Royal Palace of Madrid, while the world-renown Museo Nacional del Prado is just under twenty minutes on foot from your door.

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.

While this home won’t be winning any awards for modern design, its central locale makes it an ideal base for those looking to make the most out of Madrid’s cultural hotspots. Close to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace of Madrid, you’ve got some of the city’s most iconic sights within easy reach on foot, and plenty of nearby transport links to take you across the wider area. If art brings you to Madrid, you’ll find yourself at home amongst the apartment’s many prints and posters, while the bathtub feels like a good way to end a busy day of sightseeing, maybe even with a glass of Spanish wine in hand.
