The whole place is roomy and bright, and though two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed, it's tucked away in an alcove so it won't disrupt the flow of the living area. There's even a sweet courtyard – it's a great spot to enjoy a cafe au lait in the morning or a cocktail in the evening. Plage d'Arcachon is just a ten-minute walk away, so grab a towel and spend the day on the beach. You're also a fifteen-minute stroll from the restaurants, bars and shops in town, so this is a great base for exploring.

With its timber exterior and chalet-esque shape, you could be forgiven for envisioning some rustic living quarters upon first glance of this home close to Arcachon Bay. We think you’ll love this charming seaside abode we’ve found tucked away on the west coast of France, just 60 km from Bordeaux. Styled by your host Karine, a former interior designer, this place is certainly worth writing home about, full of soft fabrics and natural tones that make you feel at ease the second you step over the threshold. 

When you first arrive, spend a few moments decompressing in the living room before crossing the polished concrete floor to make yourself a light lunch. Once you’ve eaten, it’s time to explore so grab your sunglasses and get going. You’re just a two minute walk from Plage du Moulleau here, but if you want to venture further, Arcachon is thirteen minutes away by bike and full of interesting shops and restaurants to discover. Stay until evening and watch the sun go down over the Grande Dune du Pilat – the tallest sand dune in Europe – or make your way back home for a barbecue beneath the pine trees. It sits in the Gironde department, in a position ideal for visiting both Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion, though you may find yourself entirely content to stay put. The home is set within 52 acres of grounds with walking and jogging trails, and your host can even arrange for you to go horse-riding. The estate also boasts its own vineyard, so wine tasting is a must. We love the swimming pool and the terrace for alfresco dining, and the tennis court will be popular with more active guests. This is a traditional home so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern space.

Although this home sits close to the centre of Bourdeaux – France's sixth-most populous city, no less – this home's cute facade would easily slot into a quiet corner of the surrounding wine-producing landscape. The patterned bricks, verandah and alfresco dining table on the decking all bring a taste of country living to this vibrant metropolis.

By contrast, the home's interior is a lot more contemporary than you might expect. Aside from the bright red sofa, the colour palette leans heavily on soothingly modern whites and greys. Decoration is sparse, but that's the current vogue for minimalism rather than neglect. We've got particular praise for the kitchen, which has a wealth of sleek surfaces for cooking up local ingredients. 

The local area has a residential feel, but guests are close to many of Bourdeaux's main attractions. Rue Sainte Catherine – one of the longest pedestrianised streets in Europe – is only 1km away and has a huge range of shops to peruse. There are characteristic cobbled streets and buildings in the historic district, only 1.5km from the front door.

You'll certainly want to explore Mimizan during your stay – head into town to enjoy a seafood lunch and wander the seafront promenade next to the dunes.
