Having said that, there's more riding in the home's favour than its prime position on the map. The design is sleek and contemporary, with a preference for walls painted in muted grey, sleek surfaces and white furnishings. The bedrooms might lie on the smaller side, but the open and light-filled communal space more than makes up for it – if not, the private balcony should act as a sweetener.

Sitting within a 100-hectare estate that dates back to the 18th century, this marvellous home was once the residence of an important general during conflicts following the French Revolution. Given this impressive heritage, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that the interior still retains a sense of grandeur. However, don't confuse this with dusty and staid – as the locals might say, there's a joie de vivre to be discovered at the address.

Much of this is down to the interior design, which mixes together antique furnishings, bold print wallpaper and portraits hanging in every room. We love the lavish dining table set under a chandelier, but also appreciate the modern additions as well – we're fairly sure the aforementioned general didn't have the games room to keep him occupied while he was holed up here, but we're willing to stand corrected.

It's a similar story outside. The well-kempt gardens and rosebeds make for a charming backdrop as you stroll about the grounds, but you're also more than welcome to take a dip in the swimming pool or play a match or two of tennis on the private court. There's equipment for badminton or volleyball too if they're more your sport.

There's a lot to discover in the surrounding Vendée, as well. The sweeping beaches on the Pays de la Loire coastline start from as close as 30km away, while galleries and restaurants in the vibrant city of Nantes lie 43km to the north. A little closer to home, the nearest village is 2.5km away and has a pair of bakeries, a supermarket and a restaurant to tide you over.

And when you're living on a street called Boulevard de la Plage, you can imagine that there might be a beach in sight. A five-minute stroll from the beachfront of Grande Plage de Carnac, this modern studio is the perfect base for your seaside stay. Set in a mid-century block of flats, the understated exteriors don’t give away much about what you’ll find inside. Elegant and sophisticated, your living space features wooden floors, cabinets, and a wicker lampshade which bring a certain warmth to this cosy space. There are also lovely local restaurants and bars, as well as vibrant markets within easy reach – perfect for stocking up on fresh produce and French delicacies. And after a day full of fresh sea air, this home welcomes you to relax and enjoy its calm simplicity.

A Bolt Hole From The Blue

When it comes to long-awaited holidays, we sometimes want them so jam-packed with adventure that we can't decide where to actually go. This wooden home in Bretagne may make things easier for you. Want a holiday by the pool, where you are only breaking away from the loungers to have lunch? Done. We'll throw in a hot tub as well, in case your muscles need a soak. Want to have a quick round of gold? Check – the closest golf course is only ten kilometres away. Plus, the beaches of Bretagne are under fifteen-minutes by car. There's an outdoor barbecue if you're into cooking your meals, or many restaurants around in case you want a round of oysters and a bottle of Pouilly Fumé.
