Although this Pembrokeshire apartment underwent a recent renovation, one thing that hasn't changed is just how peaceful the view from the balcony is, with the unmistakably blue waters of Carmarthen Bay peering through the trees. It may not be the biggest outdoor space in the world, but this seaward orientation makes up for it.

Inside, the glass doors in the main living area are especially generous when it comes to natural light and this dances pleasingly off the wooden floors and white walls. When it comes to the design, it's a pretty simple affair with only a few pieces of coastal artwork nodding to the location, but it's all been executed pretty well, particularly the sleek kitchen and bathroom.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the centre of Saundersfoot and its beach is all of five mintues' walk from the front door. The town of Tenby is also only ten minutes' drive down the coastline and offers visitors a castle and a selection of galleries to visit.

When Mary Ann Evans paid a visit to this home in 1857, she was inspired to write a novel. A year later, Scenes From A Clerical Life was published under the nom de plume George Eliot and over the course of the next twenty years, she would write some of the most influential books of the period, including Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda.

No pressure to anybody coming to this four-storey, Grade-II listed townhouse in the present day, then. Straight away, you can see why it had the power to rouse dormant literary ambitions — the view from the huge windows of Tenby Harbour is nothing short of sublime. Even though the interior has been updated in the proceeding two centuries, there are still signs of the home's heritage, from the high ceilings and tall windows to the original wooden floorboards in the hallway.

If you ever need a break from working on your manuscript, Castle Beach takes all of a minute to reach on foot, as does the 12th-century landmark that lends the sandy spot its name. Catching the twenty-minute ferry to see the abbey on Caldey Island is well worth doing, too.

Overlooking Tenby's South Beach, this apartment on the lower-ground floor of a handsome yellow building is ideal for those who want to be able to go from their front door to the seaside in a matter of seconds, rather than minutes.

Aside from this proximity to the sea, we found lots else to like about the home. The design is pared-back and sophisticated, with parquet floors, white walls and a selection of chic furnishings creating the relaxed ambience of a high-end hotel's lobby. The baby-blue kitchen is both super-sleek and big enough for cooking up hearty meals, while there's also a private courtyard outside just in case the weather's nice enough to dine alfresco.

If that's the case, there's plenty to see and do in this south Welsh idyll. Tenby Castle is only ten minutes' walk up the coast, as is the town's Museum and Art Gallery. This area by the North Beach is also where you can catch a ferry to Caldey Island, on which you can visit the monastery and spot some of the diverse wildlife.

 

Master Draughtsman

This sophisticated, monochromatic home in the heart of Tenby allows you to rise with the sun as light pours in through the skylight above the comfortable bed. Just because you’re awake, however, doesn’t mean you have to get out of bed. Stroll to the sleek kitchen for a cup of coffee and get back under the covers to read by the natural light whilst the kids are still peacefully asleep in the loft. 

After a Full English breakfast, make your way to the sandy beaches of this beautiful harbour town and spend the day sunbathing, watching the kids play in the salty surf, and trying every possible combination of soft serve. Explore the quaint shops and cafes surrounding this home and when exhaustion sets in, make your way back home with a takeaway box of fresh fish and chips that you can enjoy at the little breakfast bar.

As you look around this home, it becomes clear very quickly that it has been designed to make the most of the beautiful coastal scenery in which this part of south Wales really specialises. In the living room, huge bi-fold doors open up to Juliet balconies that gaze out over Tenby's South Beach, while in the bedrooms there are further balconies, only this time with a view of Caldy Island. With such glorious panoramas, you could be forgiven for not really paying the interior much attention, but when you do get around to it, you'll find a modern space that's simple but effective — we're fans of the minimalist white kitchen, in particular. As you can probably imagine when looking out the window, the beach isn't too far away — just five minutes' walk, in fact. Tenby Castle can be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, too.

Mornings here would be best spent enjoying a leisurely cuppa and breakfast, seated on the balcony as you overlook the shore. From here, you can take in the breathtaking vistas of golden sandy beaches and rolling waves, with a panorama that even stretches as far as St. Catherine’s Island and Caldey Island.

Spend your days on Tenby's South Beach itself, which is a short walk away, below a promenade and cliffs. Then, when you return home, get comfortable on the sofa or in the armchair to continue admiring the views. Even while you’re cooking dinner at night, you will be able to snatch glimpses of the sea views through the windows. 

Shore is Something

Having undergone a recent refurbishment, this home is sure to please the more discerning holidaymakers. The living room mixes smart parquet flooring, tufted sofas and coastal artwork for a soothing place to kick back and relax, although if the weather gods are smiling upon you, there's no reason not to head out into the garden and sit on the raised deck instead. When it comes to filling your days, the town's North and South Beaches can both be reached in under a quarter of an hour on foot, while getting to the castle only takes slightly longer.

With so many attractions no more than a ten-minute drive from home, there is no shortage of day trips and excursions to keep you busy. From adventure parks, open farms, and Norman castles to fishing trips, hikes, and coastal walks; return home each day feeling refreshed, content, and perhaps a little tired. Don’t worry, you can unwind in your very own, private hot tub. While soaking in the warmth of these spa-like bubbles, take in the green rolling hills all around. Super luxurious yet charmingly old-school, this manor sits in the charming town of Penally, near Tenby. So as well as having cosy country pubs and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on your doorstep, it’s just a six-minute drive into the centre of Tenby to explore the castle and beach. The home itself stands bay-windowed and bold, bright white against the blue sky. Built around 1840, it’s a Grade II listed building with two acres of stepped, walled garden to explore. Terraces with panoramic sea views, a swimming pool with adjoining hot tub, flowerbeds bursting with bloom and secret grottos fill the grounds. When dinner calls, there are plenty of places to dine – the sunny orangery that opens out onto the terrace, the sunny cubby hole in the kitchen or in the long, formal dining room. Chefs of the group can cook in the family kitchen, or leave it to a professional and make use of the catering kitchen in the basement. Down here you’ll also find the private bar and games room, like your own personal pub. Bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes to fit couples and kids, and our favourite has to be the master with its hand-carved four-poster bed and view of the sea from the bay window.

Take advantage of the glorious weather and follow the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to Saundersfoot or mosey into town to get your culture fix at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery.
