It sits along a steep, cobbled street in the heart of Florence's historic centre and boasts proximity to all the main sights on foot. You couldn't ask for a better location, less than a twenty-minute stroll from the Duomo and the famous Piazzale Michelangelo viewpoint and even closer to the Pitti Palace's museums and gardens. 

The interior is warm and inviting, striking the perfect balance between authentic charm and contemporary comfort. We especially love the open-plan living space, primed for relaxation with a compact yet equipped kitchen, a large dining table, a cosy lounge and a majestic fireplace. Perched on the second floor, it feels delightfully peaceful despite its central location and offers beautiful views from its large shuttered windows. Situated close to all the historical sights, you can walk to landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, while good public transport connections mean that you can easily reach other parts of the city, too. Of course, being in the heart of the city has its quirks. Noise is likely here, and a climb to the third floor is required as the building doesn't have a lift. But once inside, we reckon you'll appreciate the traditional features on offer. The open-plan living area has just enough room to decompress after sightseeing as well as a compact (yet well-appointed) kitchen to rustle up Italian dishes. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, though – fine for short stays, but may not suit everyone.

Back at this apartment, housed in a historic palazzo, you can take in the views over Piazza della Signoria – the vistas here are stunning. The living area is a great place to relax after a busy day in Florence – this room also sleeps guests five and six on a sofa bed. This home is a great find.

Directly between the Duomo and the Basilica di San Lorenzo, Oak Cask is in a really special position. You’ll have to put up with the tourists outside, but that’s the case everywhere in Florence, and it really shouldn’t cause you to pass up the chance to stay here. On top of the location, we also really liked the terrace – there’s enough furniture on it to eat alfresco, and as it faces west, it’s perfect for long evenings outside.

It’s all about the location at this petit apartment in Florence. The striking Duomo – the emblem of the city – is just a two-minute stroll away and the streets surrounding the apartment are home to trattoria serving Tuscan cuisine, bars for appertivo and art galleries and old churches galore. Slipping straight from the historic streets to your bolthole, you’ll find a simple spot to put your feet up. While it won’t win any awards for decor, the convenient touches (bedside alcoves, big kitchen cupboards) are appreciated. You can't beat the location, though.

We think it’d be very well suited to groups of friends or families, as it has a great social space but individual guests can still have their privacy. This modern apartment sits just outside of the bustling city centre of Florence, in San Frediano. It’s an excellent choice for those wanting to be close to the sights of the city while still enjoying a peaceful holiday location – you can easily walk to Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Duomo from here. The apartment is also close to Santa Maria Novella train station. We love the stylish furniture and the large windows, which make this home-from-home bright and welcoming. The balcony is the perfect spot for a glass of wine before heading out to dinner.

A simple, unflashy, but generally pleasant loft, Rush Hour’s main draw is its proximity to the Duomo. It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.

The apartment has been recently renovated – it’s a beautiful home from home with a grandeur that’s fitting for a city as stunning as Firenze. 

The vaulted ceilings with frescoes will make you feel as though you’re staying in one of the grand palazzos of days gone by. Huge windows keep the apartment bright and airy, and modern furnishings mean that although it feels historic, everything you need is right at your fingertips. 

In the morning, stroll eight minutes to Giardino della Fortezza to begin your day with a moment of calm. Sip coffee and eat a pastry or two while you plan how you’ll spend your stay. Perhaps you’ll walk first to the Duomo to admire the architecture of the cathedral – it takes fourteen minutes. In the afternoon, after you’ve taken in a museum or a gallery, you might like to hop in a cab to Piazzale Michelangelo. It takes fifteen minutes to get arguably the best view of the city.

Set within an eye-catching period building, complete with imposing wooden double doors, along the rather lovely Via dei Servi, which connects the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. 

This narrow street is lined with a wide array of shops, charming cafes, and traditional restaurants, which should be your first port of call when you get the urge to head out and explore the city. For a closer look at the duomo, you need only walk a couple of minutes to the bustling piazza that surrounds it. Wandering a little over 100m in the opposite direction will lead to the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci Museum, which is filled with life-sized machines based on his many sketches. 

For more Renaissance creations, the iconic Uffizi Gallery lies around 700m to the south – well within walking distance. We'd recommend a leisurely riverside stroll along the River Arno afterwards, or if you're feeling active, head out on a stand-up paddleboarding expedition downriver.

Inside, the apartment is all clean lines and contemporary design, the exposed wood of the soaring ceilings and large wood-framed windows are the main clues to the building's extensive history. An open kitchen and living area combines Scandinavian style with Italian flair to create a stylish space with a real soul.

In Italian construction, the 'piano nobile' refers to the storey of a building — typically the first — on which the nobility would reside, therefore being designed to get the most favourable living conditions. This apartment in a fifteenth-century building is a prime example of how this looks in practice. High ceilings and large windows (through some of which the Duomo can be spotted) make the interior feel bright and inviting, while being positioned above street level means that it's a little more peaceful than elsewhere in the building. While there are some period features — the fresco ceilings and the imposing oak front door — the apartment has been modernised in the ensuing six hundred years or so. The parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and mid-century style furniture in deep blues and greens are today's emblems of fine taste. When you're ready to go exploring, you don't have far to go — Basilica di San Lorenzo and Riccardi Medici Palace are just across the street, while the Duomo is only five minutes' walk away.

While the interiors are utterly charming, a home of this heritage does have its quirks. Expect to climb stairs to reach the third floor and a mezzanine space accessed via a small ladder that is unsuitable for young children. It’s also worth noting there's a double sofa bed here and only room for two around the kitchen table. However, there’s heaps of space to spill out in the main living room with those high ceilings and views of the piazza below.
