Looking for a characterful bolthole in the historic heart of Tuscany’s capital? This quintessential Florentine apartment should do nicely, set just two minutes from Piazza Santa Maria Novella and five from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. While the interiors are utterly charming, a home of this heritage does have its quirks. Expect to climb stairs to reach the third floor and a mezzanine space accessed via a small ladder that is unsuitable for young children. It’s also worth noting there's a double sofa bed here and only room for two around the kitchen table. However, there’s heaps of space to spill out in the main living room with those high ceilings and views of the piazza below.

Crossed Paths is right in the middle of the city – at one end of the street is Santa Maria Novella, at the other the river. It’s a great position to be in, and it feels like that’s informed some of the interiors. They’re kept in fantastic condition, but the decoration feels a little impersonal, and you’d struggle to cook a dinner party in that kitchen. Still, you aren’t exactly short of things to do and places to eat in the area.

Apex has so many things going for it that focussing on the specifics seems unfair. Needless to say that everything in the flat is of the highest quality, whether that’s the carrara marble in the bathroom, or the four-poster bed. In fact it’s the bedrooms (or three of them anyway) that make the biggest impression. They’re what you might imagine from a seventeenth-century noble mansion, and while obviously all these things are personal preferences, they make for a seriously good night’s sleep.

For more Renaissance creations, the iconic Uffizi Gallery lies around 700m to the south – well within walking distance. We'd recommend a leisurely riverside stroll along the River Arno afterwards, or if you're feeling active, head out on a stand-up paddleboarding expedition downriver.

A simple, unflashy, but generally pleasant loft, Rush Hour’s main draw is its proximity to the Duomo. It also has a set of French windows that light up the entire place (it’s all a single room, with the exception of the bathroom). There are a couple of sister flats in the same building, still managed by Valerio, so while the flat itself can’t really accommodate more than two people, larger groups could book more than one place at a time.

In Italian construction, the 'piano nobile' refers to the storey of a building — typically the first — on which the nobility would reside, therefore being designed to get the most favourable living conditions. This apartment in a fifteenth-century building is a prime example of how this looks in practice. High ceilings and large windows (through some of which the Duomo can be spotted) make the interior feel bright and inviting, while being positioned above street level means that it's a little more peaceful than elsewhere in the building. While there are some period features — the fresco ceilings and the imposing oak front door — the apartment has been modernised in the ensuing six hundred years or so. The parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and mid-century style furniture in deep blues and greens are today's emblems of fine taste. When you're ready to go exploring, you don't have far to go — Basilica di San Lorenzo and Riccardi Medici Palace are just across the street, while the Duomo is only five minutes' walk away.

The flat is surrounded by Renaissance architecture, with both the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio a few minutes away on foot. The structure itself also fits into the category, and the wooden beams are a nice touch that keep the interior grounded in the area’s history, even if the contrast with the art is striking.

Footsteps from the backstreet trattoria street of Borgo S. Jacopo, this apartment is perfect for a foodie visit to Florence. Stroll along this restaurant-lined street to reach the Ponte Vecchio in just four minutes too. The Uffizi Gallery with its renowned Renaissance art collection is also a seven-minute walk, showing you just how central this place is.

From the apartment, you can spot the Basilica Santo Spirito whose interior dates back to the Renaissance. By inner-city Florence standards, this apartment set over two floors is palatial. There’s a banquet-worthy dining room and a well-equipped Italian-style kitchen. Though, with countless trattorias just a stroll away, we suspect you’ll be eating out a lot. It’s worth noting, at full occupancy, the last two guests will have to make do with a single bed and pull-out bed in the cosy fourth bedroom. Fine for a short stay or children sharing – but it might not float everyone’s boat.

Italian Musing

In front of the Baptistry of St John, Grand Lyric is right in the thick of things. Florence is known as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and this feels like the perfect place from which to explore it. You might expect somewhere so central to be cramped, but this is actually a very decent size, and can hold six or seven people fairly comfortably. The only shame is that the TV isn’t very large, but when there’s this sort of history on the doorstep, it’s hard to get too worked up.

The apartment's central location offers easy access to the city's many headline attractions, just 400m from the Palazzo Strozzi and its many 16th-century Renaissance artworks. Elsewhere, the bustling Piazza della Repubblica and the iconic red-domed cathedral are within a leisurely ten-minute stroll. 

To the south, the five-arched Ponte alla Carraia spans the River Arno, linking you to the vast Palazzo Pitti, one of Florence's largest architectural monuments, under a kilometre away. While it was once a grand private residence, today it houses the Medici family's lavish private collection.
