Should you fancy a change of scenery, Bologna is reached in around twenty minutes by car, while Modena is reached in about an hour.

You only have to look at the large and colourful garden to see what we mean. Sitting in the middle is a swimming pool sure to be appreciated on hot summer afternoons, neighboured by loungers and not just one, but two hot tubs. Come dinner time, the alfresco table under the pergola is a wonderful spot for feasting while the sun goes down overhead.

The interior design lies on the contemporary side of things, with a soothingly bright colour palette, a chic taste in furnishings and a minimalist kitchen heavy on sleek surfaces. We have especially kind words for the bedroom suites, which have a refined elegance more typically seen in high-end hotels.

But wait, there's more. The villa sits within a large estate which has a wealth of communal amenities that guests can take advantage of, ranging from three restaurants and seven outdoor pools to opportunities for wine tasting in the cellar. The distinctive architecture and cultural institutions of Bologna are only 22km away, too.

There are still hints of history here, like the carefully-preserved original frescoes in the chapel, alongside all the modern touches you need for a relaxing stay. The rooms are cosy and inviting, with plenty of space to stretch out, but the real highlight of this home is waiting outside. The house is on a hill, so the grounds offer glorious, 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside – views you can soak up while swimming in the pool or lounging in the sunshine. If shopping or sightseeing are on the agenda, jump in the car and discover the delights of Bologna, one of Italy’s most beautiful cities.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove. Each of the four bedrooms blends rustic charm with supreme comfort, while the bathrooms are fitted out with beautiful tiles and gleaming marble for a touch of luxury.

Step outside and you'll discover a lush landscape of terraced gardens, an inviting pool and breathtaking views over the Tuscan terrain. Your hosts recommend making the trip to Forno La Chiocciola, where you can stock up on Florentine speciality flatbread, schiaccata, each morning. Afterwards, place yourself poolside and settle in for a day of sunbathing, interrupted only by refreshing dips in the water and trips to the kitchen to get some more of that delicious bread.

Located just outside the medieval town of Vinci, the birthplace of the town's most famous son is within easy walking distance of this charming villa. Inside, the home takes inspiration from Leonardo, with thoughtfully curated paintings adorning the walls, wicker sofas in the living room and beautifully carved wooden beds. When in Tuscany though, outdoors is always best. Set atop a hill, you'll take in panoramic views of alluring landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. Cool off with a few casual laps of the private courtyard pool, surrounded by aromatic herbs, colourful flowers and centuries-old olive trees. Later on, sit down to an alfresco dinner at one of the many outdoor seating areas. After following in the footsteps of greatness, you’re sure to return home feeling inspired.

Elegant and unique, this home makes for an excellent base in Tuscany. It’s in the village of Impruneta on the outskirts of Florence, surrounded by countryside, olive groves and vineyards – it also borders the Chianti Classico region. The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. But for a break to Italy that feels a little like stepping back in time, it’s a great choice.

Head into the Tuscan hills just outside the charming village of Cellai and keep an eye out for an imposing villa with its own bell tower. Almost unbelievably, this stunning property will be your home from home for however long you decide to stay.

Step inside your apartment, and you'll discover a typically Tuscan scene, with tiled terracotta floors, exposed wooden ceilings and frescoes painted directly on the walls. Four individually decorated bedrooms, each as enchanting as the last, will serve as your soothing sanctuaries for you to unwind at the end of each day. Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. Spend your days laid out by the pool, interrupted your sunbathing sessions only for refreshing dips and trips to the kitchen to rip off a chunk of that delicious bread.

For the culture vultures, we'd suggest spending a day (at the very least) wandering the backstreets and alleyways of Florence. In our opinion, getting lost on a self-guided tour is the best way to get to know the artistic, architectural and cultural history of Tuscany.

In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings. 

Apart from Tuscan farmhouse tradition, inside you’ll find some vintage touches like a wireless radio from the early 20th century, and antique furnishings. The old kitchen has been preserved with museum-like care (with a traditional bread over that still works), but the modern kitchen is a sleek, professional affair with slate-grey units and a huge island at its core. 

The town of Scarperia e San Piero is a four-minute drive away to stock up on supplies and there’s even a country restaurant just behind this home if you don’t fancy driving.


Gates of Paradise

Racing fans might know Mugello for its circuit, but away from the petrol and screeching tyres, the Mugello countryside is a truly serene Tuscan gem. Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. You’ll also have plenty of choice for indoor relaxation, with three living rooms – one for every floor – and a delightful terrace upstairs where you can sip your espresso every morning. After a day exploring the rolling hills of Tuscany in the hot sun, we can’t think of anything better than coming home to a chilled glass of prosecco in this rural manor.

This enchanting villa is situated in the understated and under-appreciated Tuscan town of Empoli. While it's not far from the heart of the town, you'd never believe it, given the cypress-lined drive that leads up to its stunning neoclassical facade.

Stark white dominates all areas of this home, leaving it gleaming under the glorious summer sun. Inside, relax beneath soaring moulded ceilings and enjoy the cool marble floors underfoot as you wander from room to room. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of all is the main bedroom, with its private sitting room, dressing room and gorgeous bathroom with pool views from the unique round tub, plus a dazzling terrace for exclusive use. 

For those who appreciate their privacy, the en-suite attic room can be completely cordoned off. It even has its own kitchen, living room and fully furnished pocket terrace. Step out onto the streets and you're just a ten-minute walk from the centre of town. It's well worth paying a visit to the fascinating Museum of Glass one afternoon before stopping off at Piazza della Vittoria for an aperitivo. If you're feeling adventurous, renowned restaurant Trippéria serves up lampredotto, a traditional dish made from the fourth and final stomach of a cow. Meanwhile, if you feel like exploring further afield, the stunning cities of Pisa and Florence are both a little over half an hour away.

This beautiful home can be found in Reggello, close to Florence and only 4 kilometres from some of the best shopping in Tuscany. It’s a modern home-from-home, cool and comfortable, with a delightful outside space. A private pool sits in a vibrant garden filled with flowers and aromatic plants, where there’s a barbecue for alfresco dining, and an air-conditioned gym. Sliding doors connect the relaxing garden with the stylish villa, with its open-plan living and dining space. You won’t want to leave.

Set amidst the Val di Nievole, this terracotta hideaway combines Tuscan charm with contemporary touches. Views of the countryside await outdoors, whether swimming in the private pool, snoozing on a sun lounger, or savouring a glass of Italian wine on the terrace. Head indoors, and you'll find cosy living spaces, a sleek kitchen, and four comfortable bedrooms. Keen to explore? Montecatini Terme, known for its healing spas, and Pescia, famous for flowers, are both a short drive away. A day trip to Lucca, just 16 kilometres by car, could also be on the cards.

Whether you're after a peaceful holiday with friends or a spacious spot for a family gathering, this restored farmhouse is an excellent choice. It's situated on a private country estate in the charming village of Lamporecchio, Tuscany, and has well-tended secret gardens, as well as olive groves to explore. This breathtaking property is spread over two floors and benefits from a private patio and communal pool area – the latter of which is shared with four neighbouring properties. We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home. 

Tuscan Grove

In the countryside, between Lucca and the ancient fountain-filled town of Montecatini Terme, this villa invites you to live the dolce vita. Lucca is ideal day-tripping distance away at a half-hour drive, and the fifteen-minute drive into Montecatini Terme sees you at supermarkets to stock up on supplies. 

Let’s start with that view, particularly from the outdoor dining table on the lawn – a patchwork of fields and orange-roofed towns in the valley below stretches for miles. A turquoise rectangle of swimming pool invites you for a dip in the heat of the day. The bird-cage-style seating area on the edge of the hillside is a particularly nice touch, especially for a sundowner looking out over the valley.

Honey-hued stonework and bricks on the outside give off that traditionally Tuscan aesthetic and inside you’ll find an open living space beneath a timber-beamed ceiling. This one’s for the foodies as there are three kitchens to choose from, including the summer kitchen outside. The area is teeming with olive oil producers, farmers markets and vineyards so you’ll want to spend days cooking, feasting and relaxing. 

Buon Appetito

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.
