We love the grapevine-draped patio, as well as the private pool and garden full of plants and fruit and olive trees. Talking of olives – there’s an annual Olive Oil Festival around November to enjoy, but any time of year you can explore this pretty village surrounded by vineyards. Pergine Valdarno has a grocery, bakery, butchers shop, and restaurant, while further afield discover the castles and churches this romantic area is famed for.

The local town is one that's easy to explore on foot and you'll discover plenty of restaurants and ice cream parlours, plus a couple of museums, during your wanderings. The Basilica of Saint Margaret of Cortona and Fortress of Girifalco are both only twenty minutes away on foot, too.

The villa stands in vast private grounds just a ten-minute drive from the hilltop town of Montone, looking out over the hills and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast.

Attractive and welcoming, this home was once a farmhouse. It’s been lovingly renovated, retaining the charm of the past while adding home comforts. We recommend hiring a car so you can drive to nearby Ravenna and Forli, and admire the countryside on the way.

If you’re in search of a rustic getaway, this 18th-century home ticks all the right boxes. Surrounded by trees, the garden offers beautiful views, as well as a swimming pool (open seasonally), a barbecue and a wood-burning pizza oven. You’ll find the main house consists of two independent apartments, while the garden cottage has an additional two bedrooms – providing plenty of space for groups to spread out and enjoy quality time together. Some of the furnishings are a little dated, but there’s plenty of charm and character. It’s also just a short drive from the picturesque hilltop town of Cortona (2.5 kilometres away), while the nearest amenities are also just a short drive away.

This charming holiday apartment lies in the heart of Cortona, ideal for a romantic getaway. The terrace boasts lovely views of the surrounding landscape, though the outdoor space is overlooked by nearby buildings, so it doesn't feel the most private. Your host can provide a free high chair here and little ones will love the garden, though the interior decor is quite traditional and won't be for everyone. You'll find public parking a short walk away, but Cortona's mouth-watering restaurants and picturesque churches are reached easily on foot, so you won't need a car.

There's a corner bar in the living room and one of the most imposing fire surrounds we've ever seen, while the dining area can seat up to twenty-four guests – perfect for events. And you're welcome to cook for yourselves but for the ultimate in luxury, why not hire a private chef to do all the hard work in the stainless steel, professional kitchen for you? 

Nine en-suite bedrooms, some with their own sitting rooms and Jacuzzis, provide plenty of space and there's the option to add more beds if necessary. And for an additional fee, you can use the beautiful indoor pool and its sauna.

Outside, undulating lawns and flower beds give way to a large terrace with sun loungers, parasols and a dining pergola – not to mention a private pool of an excellent size. You can arrange for this villa to come with staff, becoming more of a hotel experience, or opt for independence. Either way, it's a perfect choice for a special break in the Tuscan countryside.

The first thing that drew us to this beautiful villa in the Umbrian countryside was the plunge pool, suspended above the swimming pool with a waterfall cascading between the two. The whole thing creates a tiered terrace effect, which is perfect for a home perched on the hillside. From the pool, you can admire the forest-clad hills unfurling for miles before you. Below, the poolside terrace is home to myriad loungers, and there’s a second wrap-around terrace in the villa’s first floor, covered by a pergola and adorned with soft furnishings. A full outdoor kitchen in rose-pink can provide lavish alfresco feasts with its gas hob and rustic pizza oven. You’ll also find a huge lawn for football or tennis, or perhaps a game of boules, within the 10,000 square metres of tree-filled grounds.

Inside you’ll find all the classic features of a traditional Umbrian home – wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors and a rustic-style kitchen that still has serious 19th-century farmhouse vibes. Each bedroom has its own character, with wrought-iron beds and hand-painted wardrobes harking back to yesteryear. We were keen on the sunflower room in olive and forest green, and the master with its four-poster swathed with curtains. But the room with the lion tapestry really grabbed us.

Set in a 17th-century hamlet in the Umbrian countryside, this home has an idyllic location. Take in the views from the garden with its private pool or the variety of terraces. The accommodation is split between two stone-built farmhouses, so this place is ideal for extended families or friends. Each house is set over two floors and has a kitchen, dining area and lounge and has traditional decor. The area is perfect for hiking or explore the picturesque Medieval village of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, which is a short drive away.

A seven-minute drive from two of the Adriatic coast’s glorious beaches, this Italian country villa sits in a blissfully quiet location. You’re overlooking rolling vineyards here, verdant green in summer and burnt orange and sunshine yellow in autumn. The perfect shores of Marcelli Beach and Numama Beach are each a seven-minute drive away, where loungers line the sand and the sea is crystal clear.

Back at the villa, you’ve got a shared swimming pool should you fancy a cooling dip in summer. Open up the double doors in the living room to the private brick patio, or the shaded veranda on the other side of the house. Inside, you’ve got the staples of Italian rusticana keeping things on theme; wooden ceilings and thick exposed stone walls. The kitchen is decidedly sleek and modern, and there are pops of character courtesy of gilded mirrors and Chinese dressers.

Giving way to sweeping views of the Arezzo hills, this villa's outdoor space is undoubtedly the main draw. With a swimming pool and ample seating for everything from alfresco dining to sunbathing, it's made for sun worshippers. Little ones will also adore the green back garden where they can let their imaginations and legs run free. Though it feels hard to beat the panoramic landscape, it does try. Starting with the indoors hot tub and sauna, where a large bi-fold door connects you to the outdoors. We also like the mix of modern and rustic elements here. As for location, you're a short drive from Arezzo. 

The Whispering Hills

Surrounded by scenery straight out of an oil painting, it comes as no surprise that the variety of landscape in the Valdarno area is believed to have been portrayed by the great da Vinci himself. The so-called balze that characterise the region and numerous artworks, rural structures, and Romanesque churches provide the perfect backdrop to this stunning, Tuscan palace. By no means out of place amongst such grandeur and history, an aristocratic elegance floods this home. From its turreted bedrooms, wooden beam ceilings, and formal dining room, to its private drive and panoramic veranda that looks out onto twenty-hectares of land and bordering vineyards. Large groups and families will have no struggle for space here, with a main house and two annexes to spread out over. A games veranda also sports its own gym area with treadmill and stepper, whilst multiple porches and shaded lounge areas offer endless spots for relaxation and retreat. A short distance from the home lies a number of trails to explore, either by foot or mountain bike, which your host supplies. Dotted with sites of Roman and Etruscan heritage and a wealth of flora and fauna, there is beauty to behold as far as the eye can see.

With white marble, dark stained woods, and rough-hewn stone, this villa feels like an extension of the Italian hillside rather than anything made by man. But, heading into the kitchen, the scene changes to one of farmhouse rusticana, with all the mod cons of the 21st century to help you cater for the group.

The location is a secluded one, tucked away amidst the agricultural landscape of Emilia Romagna (considered the larder of Italy). The Adriatic Sea is a short drive away should you wish to hit the beach and there are plenty of places to pause for an espresso or stock up on the famous produce of the region in the nearby town of Forli. One thing not to miss is the view from ‘The Balcony of Romagna’ at the medieval borgo of Bertinolo, just a kilometre away.
