By inner-city Florence standards, this apartment set over two floors is palatial. There’s a banquet-worthy dining room and a well-equipped Italian-style kitchen. Brilliantly efficient, Blue Heron combines easy living with a great location. The design here is clean, modern, and comfortable, but because it’s run by a management company it does lack a bit of character. We won’t hold that against Blue Heron though, because you’ll find it in the very heart of Florence, just a few minutes’ walk from the Duomo. Better yet, this street is quiet and surprisingly uncrowded given its proximity to Florence’s biggest tourist attraction. There’s even a charming balcony that looks the courtyard – a perfect spot for an espresso or a glass of wine.

Set in a historic building (which used to be the Habsburg embassy in the nineteenth century), Eyes To The Sky makes an impression from very early on. It’s ridiculously grand, with double-height, frescoed ceilings, and antique furniture (along with a few modern, designer additions). It’s just around the corner from Piazza della Libertà, so it’s just away from the most crowded parts of the centre, but even walking to the Ponte Vecchio doesn’t take more than twenty minutes.

We always love to see homes that manage to mix together period features and modern design, and this apartment in a stately mansion in the centre of Florence is a glowing example of how to manage this balance.

As well as this invitingly cool spot for a dip, guests are also treated to a plant-covered pergola with a table underneath that's sure to be the setting for idyllic alfresco feasts. This outdoor space is a peaceful enclave compared to the busy Florentine streets nearby and is a major perk of the address.

The home itself is typically Tuscan in style and you'll be able to spot several period features, including capitellos on the top of columns, wooden ceiling beams and a rather ornately designed door. There's a real air of palatial glamour to the tall living room, particularly with the marble fireplace and upright piano. Prepare for some street noise from time to time – but that’s to be expected for an apartment in such a prime location. And wait until you hear the bells of the church chime during the day – that's a memory made right there. While the lofty ceilings and wooden shutter windows remain in the period building, everywhere else is pared-back and contemporary for a fuss-free, easy stay.

And with so many museums and galleries such as the Accademia within walking distance, it’s easy to immerse yourself in this city’s culture. The apartment itself has views over rooftops and elegant streets from the living area’s window – this room also sleeps one guest on a sofa bed. There’s also a mezzanine loft chill-out area here – the perfect spot to read a book and relax after a busy day exploring Florence.

Delivering knockout vistas of Florence's rooftops and the mighty Duomo from nearly every room, we've fallen hard for this central bolthole. Each light-filled bedroom is as elegant as the next, though they are short on floor and storage space, so we recommend packing lightly. It's also worth noting at full occupancy, it could be a squeeze to all kick back on the sofa, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, it's short on prepping space. It's the perfect excuse to eat out instead, and luckily, you're an olive stone's throw from countless traditional trattorias for all the Tuscan classics.

Enjoying a privileged position right on the banks of the River Arno, this handsome apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a sunny, relaxing stay. 
 
Inside, Old World charm creates an instantly inviting welcome in the grand living area with a plethora of antiques and classical-style furnishings, as well as a beautiful mezzanine library – the ideal spot to stow yourself away for some quiet reading. Those looking to work from home will find plenty of desk spaces, including in the elegant bedrooms with their river views.
 
Our favourite spot, however, is the private terrace overlooking the Arno, the San Niccolò district and the Oltrarno hills. Start your mornings here over coffee while listening to the river’s whispers or end evenings with a spritz at sundown before discovering the local dining scene.
