Each light-filled bedroom is as elegant as the next, though they are short on floor and storage space, so we recommend packing lightly. It's also worth noting at full occupancy, it could be a squeeze to all kick back on the sofa, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, it's short on prepping space. For a closer look at the duomo, you need only walk a couple of minutes to the bustling piazza that surrounds it. Wandering a little over 100m in the opposite direction will lead to the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci Museum, which is filled with life-sized machines based on his many sketches.

In Italian construction, the 'piano nobile' refers to the storey of a building — typically the first — on which the nobility would reside, therefore being designed to get the most favourable living conditions. This apartment in a fifteenth-century building is a prime example of how this looks in practice. High ceilings and large windows (through some of which the Duomo can be spotted) make the interior feel bright and inviting, while being positioned above street level means that it's a little more peaceful than elsewhere in the building. While there are some period features — the fresco ceilings and the imposing oak front door — the apartment has been modernised in the ensuing six hundred years or so. The parquet flooring, marble bathrooms and mid-century style furniture in deep blues and greens are today's emblems of fine taste. When you're ready to go exploring, you don't have far to go — Basilica di San Lorenzo and Riccardi Medici Palace are just across the street, while the Duomo is only five minutes' walk away.

When we came across this quaint apartment, we did a double-take. While it may be a bit old-school in style, it has lots of charm and comfort for a city stay. Set on the third floor, with a private balcony overlooking the rooftops of Florence and a courtyard that oozes Italian appeal, there's no lack of character here. Located in the historic district, you'll have lots of sights to see within walking distance, too. All in all, for a cosy stay with friends or family, this one ticks a lot of boxes.

Located on inside a restored historical building near Piazza della Republica, Pietra Serena is a great stay if you want the city's museums other sights to be on your doorstep. This is a peaceful home, designed with comfort in mind – there are chromotherapy lights in the living room and bathrooms which let you change the light to suit your mood. The second bedroom's single bed is only accessible via the ladder, but just like the rest of the furniture, it's both stylish and immaculate. We particularly loved the high living room ceiling, which amplifies the natural light.
