The home, on the sixth floor with a working elevator – rare in Florence – might not be revolutionary, and the kitchen is small, but it is comfortable, and the view of the river and Duomo is a nice touch.

Stroll along this restaurant-lined street to reach the Ponte Vecchio in just four minutes too. It's the same walking distance to the Uffizi Gallery in the historical centre of Florence. The wonderful markets at Piazza Santo Spirito, on the other hand, are a six-minute saunter – perfect for a morning browse. Of course, as you'd expect from one of the city's most desirable areas – there are plenty of fine restaurants right on your doorstep, as well as a couple of artisan wine shops. Enjoy some cantuccini dipped in vin santo on the gorgeous, large balcony or create some tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo from local truffles for dinner in the open-plan kitchen and enjoy at your dining table. We love the vintage prints that adorn the walls here, as well as the French doors with their views over the neighbourhood. After a busy day of sightseeing, have a soak in the bathtub and then get some rest in the serene bedrooms before another day in beguiling Florence.

Home of an architect, Alberata Selva has been meticulously designed to a coherent theme, and anything that doesn’t fit has been jettisoned. It’s the sort of obsession we understand. The flat itself is fairly large anyway, but it’s worth knowing that it would be excellent for very big groups, as both other places on the same floor of the building are run by Daniele and his team. If all booked together, they could take as many as sixteen guests at once.

The iconic river is also around the corner to join the locals in their favourite evening pastime – passeggiatas. Set in a historic Florentine villa of grand proportions, while the arched ceilings remain, everything else has been brought bang up to date. Both bedrooms have private bathrooms, and air conditioning is throughout. One thing to point out here – if six of you stay, the last two guests will share a sofa bed in the living room. The timber ceiling beams in the living space add a rustic charm and we loved the contrasting lime green and mocha brown colour scheme. Wake up refreshed and well-rested in the floral print bedroom before rustling up breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen. 

When you’re not kicking back with a good book on the sofa, head out and explore your surroundings. Pore over the elaborate frescos in the Cappella Brancacci, just a two-minute walk away. Or why not cross the Ponte alla Carraia into the heart of the city for the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fior and the bustling Piazza della Repubblica – an excellent spot to people watch with a coffee in hand. 

Cocoa & Lime

You’d be hard pressed to find a Florence apartment more central than this. All the sightseeing hotspots, including Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Duomo, are within walking distance. But it’s not just the location that impresses at this home. Housed in a historic palazzo, this home has ample space and is a great option for an extended family or group of friends. That said, it’s worth noting that at full occupancy, there's not enough space to sit out on the charming but small balcony. The last two guests will also sleep on a sofa bed in the lounge. But with those magnificent original frescoes above to admire, we don’t think you’ll mind.

Frescoed Love

The wooden beams that cut through the ceiling of Alberata Grande set the tone for the rest of the flat. They place you in the medieval architecture the city is famous for, and that sense of history is invaluable. The kitchen isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly good for simple meals and preparing a cocktail at aperitivo. There’s also the possibility of renting out one or two of the sister flats, found on the same landing. It’s not small in the first place, but between them, these three can hold a group of sixteen people.

Only a handful of homes in Florence overlook the beautiful Boboli Gardens – and this is one of them. Climb the spiral staircase to discover your own private terrace with a view, the perfect place to unwind after a day spent sightseeing. There’s also a lounge-diner and a separate kitchen for preparing homemade meals (we’ll have pasta please), plus two comfortable bedrooms (one with a bunk bed) and a bathroom. As well as the nearby Boboli Gardens, the apartment is walking distance from the Ponte Vecchio. This medieval bridge will take you across the Arno River to the historic heart of Florence – a walk that’s on many a traveller’s wish list.
