The home itself is split across two separate villas, sharing a grand social space outdoors. Two swimming pools are connected by an infinity edge and beg for a dip on a hot day. It’s all about the good life at this Italian villa. We’re not just talking la dolce vita, but the full, sustainable package. It’s on an enchanting eco lavender farm, so the fields around you are fragrant as perfume and the villa has its own orto (vegetable garden) which you’re welcome to harvest. Perhaps cook fresh-veg-topped pizzas in the antique pizza oven outdoors, and enjoy at one of two terraces, overlooking the rolling countryside. For days at home, there’s a sparkling swimming pool to cool off in, a petanque court and ping pong too. 

We’re impressed by this villa’s eco-credentials, supplied by renewable energy and with natural aromatherapy oils on offer from the lavender farm. Inside, it’s a calming medley of Japanese zen and Scandi-chic touches. The living room is set around a big fireplace and raw-wood tables and wicker lampshades are a nod to your natural surroundings. The kitchen could be the envy of any professional chef, with a huge, range-style cooker perfect for the fresh produce on your doorstep.

Getting out and exploring, you’ve got Italian countryside all around you and the village of Marsiliana is less than ten minutes drive away for supermarkets and pizzerias. Twenty minutes away you are spoiled for choice – from the charming medieval villages of Capalbio and Pitigliano to the glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants of the Silver Coast.

Traditional and cosy, this villa has all the hallmarks of an Umbrian getaway. The private pool is open in the summer and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Indoors, there's plenty of character to admire – the home was built in 1616, after all. Our favourite spot is the conservatory-style lounge, with its large windows showing off the scenery. Two bedrooms are located in a separate annexe, making it ideal for those wanting a bit more space and privacy. As for location, you'll be based near the medieval village of Monte Castello di Vibio and within easy driving distance of Todi, Perugia, and Orvieto.

Sitting within a medieval borgo (little village) whose heyday was the early 17th century, this villa complex embraces old-world Umbria. It’s pure peace and quiet out here between the endless olive groves (extra virgin olive oil is the region’s speciality) and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fields. It’s five kilometres to Monte Castello di Vibio with its ancient theatre and fifteen kilometres to the pretty town of Todi for restaurants and supermarkets.

The yard, where wheat was once threshed by hand, is now home to a smattering of chairs and tables for tipples in the sunshine. The porticoed upper terrace is the perfect spot for breakfast, or big barbecue lunches, with views of the 22-hectare estate. But the crowning glory of the gardens has to be that Roman-style swimming pool with its panoramic view of the countryside.

Accommodation is split between three separate buildings set around the courtyard. Two annexes have their own kitchenettes, living rooms and dining area so the group can spread out. The main villa is home to myriad antique-filled lounges and living rooms, including a striking main lounge set around the ancient hearth. Low, wood-beamed ceilings and old agricultural tools on the walls give that rustic farmhouse feel. A little games room invites guests to sit down for a game of chess or to peruse the library of books in here. But the real bonus inside is the dedicated celebration room which is a vast, barn-like space which can be set up for dining, dancing or even a spot of yoga.

This rustic Italian retreat looks out over a peaceful Umbrian valley, yet it’s only a short walk into the historic centre of Amelia for the local cheese shop, bars, bakeries and grocery shops. Perched on its own hilltop and just twenty minutes from Saturnia's famous thermal springs, this traditional farmhouse is the place for you if you're really trying to get away from it all. With nothing to bother you apart from the sounds of the local wildlife and the twinkling of the stars at night, it's a rural retreat for nature lovers, artists and musicians. Here the order of the day is country walks, reading in the shade, whipping up delicious meals each evening and just generally enjoying the good life. There's no need to rush anything here.

But if, after breakfast on the terrace, those views across the iconic hills have motivated you to explore, that's easily done too. Head to the surrounding villages to see their Etruscan and Roman ruins, explore Montemerano – a twenty-five-minute drive away – and don't miss the nearby thermal springs. A little isolated for some, it's a short drive to pick up supplies or eat out – but for others, this is the magic of this place.

Arriving at this Umbrian villa, you wouldn’t think it was a new build – it’s got all the character and charm of an old, Italian farmhouse with brick-lined, arched windows and a terracotta roof. It’s built with local stone and embraces organic architecture. Blending in with its bucolic surroundings, it looks out over the Oasi di Alviano nature reserve – home to protected Umbrian flora and fauna. It’s a short drive to Terni to explore ancient ruins and local cuisine in family-run restaurants and a traditional medieval hilltop town awaits at Todi nearby.

The first thing that catches the eye is the inviting, Roman-style swimming pool that looks out over the fauna-filled valley and patchwork fields to hazy hills in the distance. A loggia-style dining area houses a table for the group and a barbecue grill, all with that stunning view before you. Steal away to the olive grove and curl up in a hammock with a holiday read.

Inside, antique and vintage pieces throughout add to the old farmhouse feel of the home, alongside wooden ceilings and terracotta tiled floors. A huge double-sided fireplace sits between the dining and living room for cosy evenings in. The view from the arched window in here is simply sublime – framed like a picture on the exposed stone wall. Up on a mezzanine level, you’ll find a secluded little reading nook to hide away in.

It’s all about peace and seclusion at this Umbrian villa. On all sides, you’ve got a patchwork of rolling fields and acres of olive groves. Should you wish to discover a bit of Umbria on a day trip, the beautiful city of Orvieto is a short drive away – a shamble of ancient, ochre buildings sitting on a hilltop. However, days here can easily be spent without leaving the grounds.

The saline swimming pool is an inviting shade of turquoise, sitting against the Umbrian hills and surrounded by greenery. Beneath ancient olive and oak trees, you’ll find wooden tables for rustic lunches outdoors – perhaps cooked in the little stone building that’s been converted into a barbecue shed with a wood-fired oven. 

Beyond this villa's stone and wood-shuttered facade, you’ll find an ode to Umbrian tradition. An arched fireplace in the main living room harks back to days gone by while the worn terracotta bricks underfoot keep things cool. Wrought iron candelabra and wooden ceilings give a medieval feel to the huge sitting room in the annexe and there’s a small, book-lined living room for a quiet moment alone. Double wooden doors open up from the kitchen to the patio, so the shuttling of salads and sauces to the barbecue area is a breeze. From the fact that there's always a shaded spot by the pool to escape the heat, to the way the breeze picks up in the afternoon just as you're questioning whether you might have to retreat inside and how the sun settles on the seating area by the house each evening – these factors combine to create a stay that's sure to live long in the memory.

Inside, you'll find all the mod cons you'd expect sitting beneath elegant vaulted ceilings and surrounded by antique furniture.
