This elegant country house lies just outside Rome, with bus links into the city. Separated into two apartments, we think it's a great choice for families. The inside of the home is quite dated and won't be to everyone's taste, and at full capacity, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in one of the living areas. That said, kids will love the large garden and playground and your host can provide a cot and high chair for an additional fee. Outdoors you'll find a kitchen and bathroom in a separate building, along with the barbecue grill and alfresco dining area under the pergola for some extra protection from the sun.

Just over a five-minute drive from the centre of the picturesque town Rocca Di Papa, this lovely villa is ideal for a large family looking to explore Lazio’s medieval towns. 

Sip a Limoncello from a deck chair on the patio, taking in views of Lake Albano and the surrounding emerald green hills. Later, swim a few laps in the private pool or get the barbecue going for lunch in the picnic area surrounded by lush greenery. There are lots of shaded nooks and rustic hideaways across the sprawling grounds.

The home itself used to be a stable and while there's none of the period charm you often find with restored buildings, we think that it's a solid – if slightly unremarkable – place to rest your head for a week or two.

This recently restored 19th-century farmhouse is all you could wish for from a stay in Umbria. We love the character features such as the Barberino stone walls, terracotta floors, and barrel vault ceilings with exposed chestnut beams. The large rooms and furnishings wonderfully evoke noble hunting lodges of the last century. 

The real highlights here, though, are the beautifully-kept garden with its lawns and fragrant rose, lavender and rosemary bushes. There are around 5 hectares to explore as well. Spend your days lounging by the gorgeous saltwater pool, admiring the views over the countryside, relax in the hammock or enjoy an alfresco lunch under the jasmine-covered pergola. The Italian town of Viterbo – sandwiched between Rome and Tuscany – has been renowned for its thermal baths since the Romans were around. With this centrally located apartment, you don't even need to step out your front door for some restorative me-time. The home's wellness area comes with a Finnish sauna and is set up for Chromotherapy. It’s a peaceful space that gives this home real wow-factor.  

Aside from the wellness room, there are plenty of other striking design choices that vie for your attention. We love the spiral staircase that leads to the mezzanine, as well as the bold lime-green and blue kitchen.
