This elegant country house lies just outside Rome, with bus links into the city. Separated into two apartments, we think it's a great choice for families. The inside of the home is quite dated and won't be to everyone's taste, and at full capacity, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in one of the living areas. That said, kids will love the large garden and playground and your host can provide a cot and high chair for an additional fee. Outdoors you'll find a kitchen and bathroom in a separate building, along with the barbecue grill and alfresco dining area under the pergola for some extra protection from the sun.

Just over a five-minute drive from the centre of the picturesque town Rocca Di Papa, this lovely villa is ideal for a large family looking to explore Lazio’s medieval towns. 

Sip a Limoncello from a deck chair on the patio, taking in views of Lake Albano and the surrounding emerald green hills. Later, swim a few laps in the private pool or get the barbecue going for lunch in the picnic area surrounded by lush greenery. There are lots of shaded nooks and rustic hideaways across the sprawling grounds.

First impressions count, and they don't get much better than this. But what might not be immediately apparent on arrival is how the villa's old-world charm will slowly unveil itself to you throughout your stay here. From the fact that there's always a shaded spot by the pool to escape the heat, to the way the breeze picks up in the afternoon just as you're questioning whether you might have to retreat inside and how the sun settles on the seating area by the house each evening – these factors combine to create a stay that's sure to live long in the memory.

Inside, you'll find all the mod cons you'd expect sitting beneath elegant vaulted ceilings and surrounded by antique furniture. The spacious rooms provide plenty of space to socialise, as well as secluded spots to claim as your own when you want to lose yourself in the pages of a good book. The home itself used to be a stable and while there's none of the period charm you often find with restored buildings, we think that it's a solid – if slightly unremarkable – place to rest your head for a week or two.

You’ll find this place perched between two golf courses, and a short walk from the banks of serene Lake Monterosi and the town of the same name. Spend a day exploring your surroundings or head to the Colosseum and ancient ruins of central Rome, a fifty-minute drive away.

The home itself is split across two separate villas, sharing a grand social space outdoors. Two swimming pools are connected by an infinity edge and beg for a dip on a hot day. The Last Word

This recently restored 19th-century farmhouse is all you could wish for from a stay in Umbria. We love the character features such as the Barberino stone walls, terracotta floors, and barrel vault ceilings with exposed chestnut beams. The large rooms and furnishings wonderfully evoke noble hunting lodges of the last century. 

The real highlights here, though, are the beautifully-kept garden with its lawns and fragrant rose, lavender and rosemary bushes. There are around 5 hectares to explore as well. Spend your days lounging by the gorgeous saltwater pool, admiring the views over the countryside, relax in the hammock or enjoy an alfresco lunch under the jasmine-covered pergola. An impressive centuries-old oak also provides pleasant natural shade – the perfect spot to read a book.

Out and about, explore the olive groves, hills and woods of Umbria on foot, mountain bike or horseback. Or head to medieval hill town Lugnano in Teverina, a twenty-five-minute drive away. The Marmore Falls, a man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans, is thirty minutes in the car and well worth a trip.

The Italian town of Viterbo – sandwiched between Rome and Tuscany – has been renowned for its thermal baths since the Romans were around. With this centrally located apartment, you don't even need to step out your front door for some restorative me-time.
