Dating back to the early 1900s, you can see the turn-of-the-century architecture in the stone steps between terraces and wooden-shuttered windows. It’s a veritable playground for those that seek relaxation in the terraced gardens, where succulents fill the perfectly positioned flower beds. Spend days floating in the sleek, modern swimming pool with its integrated Jacuzzi. Lunch can be taken at the round table on the lower terrace, while dinner can be set up on the upper terrace at the more formal spot. Sun loungers are shaded by parasols and there are two hanging egg chairs for reading in the sun. From here, you can catch a glimpse of the sea with the Pontine islands floating in the deep blue.

Inside, it’s an ode to grandeur as rooms are filled with gallery-worthy sculptures and striking paintings. Art deco chandeliers in the luxe living room hark back to the villa’s origins and you can take in that sea view from the comfort of plush sofas. Parquet flooring intersects with the original salvaged mosaic. We love the light-filled kitchen with its green splashes of trailing botanica. Or, perhaps, the original vaulted ceiling in the basement bedroom with its baby grand piano in the corner. 

Location-wise, you’re in the coastal town of Circeo where a long stretch of beach is just a short walk away. In the other direction, the ancient, walled centre of town awaits with a handful of local trattoria in the shambling streets.

This stunning home is situated between the sea and the woods, in a tranquil spot on the island of Ischia. Drink in sea views and vistas of San Francesco Bay, Forio, and Ventotene from the sun loungers, the alfresco dining area, and the other pretty corners of the garden. There’s a Jacuzzi with sea views on the upper terrace, and a path leads directly to the sea. The villa is cheerful and pretty, with splashes of blue bringing the sea inside.

Lazio might not get the plaudits of Tuscany or Umbria, but it's still a beautiful region of Italy – just look at the hilltop views from this home's excellent outdoor space, which offers both a dining terrace and swimming pool to keep visitors happy during the warmer months. The home itself used to be a stable and while there's none of the period charm you often find with restored buildings, we think that it's a solid – if slightly unremarkable – place to rest your head for a week or two.

Cultivate paradise at this gorgeous villa, with its vegetable garden, surrounding olive grove and citrus fruit orchard. Made up of four buildings – a main house and three cottages – there's more than enough space for large groups, whether you're exploring the gardens or splashing about in the pool. Two of the cottages are on a single level for guests with reduced mobility, and while the decor may be a little dated, it's certainly grandiose. The nearby town of Forio and its beach are both walkable – you might want a car to explore the rest of Ischia island, though.

Formerly owned by the acclaimed writer Matilde Serao and visited by a catalogue of famous guests, this stylish home captivates you from the first moment you arrive. 

We instantly fell in love with the colourful outdoor space – it's an oasis of pure, natural beauty. A huge cushioned seating area is tailor-made for nights sharing wine, snacks and stories whilst looking out across the ocean. 

For more intimate dining, a cute dining table rests under the pergola, a wooden table is sheltered under an umbrella and a small, blue table rests close to the sea. There are so many idyllic social spots in the villa, it's hard to know which one to choose.

Before you sit down for dinner, make sure to explore the lush, green expanse of the garden. Bright flowers punctuate the verdant grass, which leads to the gorgeous heart-shaped pool in the middle. It's really one of the most beautiful outdoor areas we've ever seen.

Not that you'd ever wish to leave, but if you did fancy an adventure, you're moments from the waterfront. Wander down to the seaport in just fifteen minutes and you'll reach the nexus of bars, restaurants and cafes on the water.

This elegant apartment is tucked away just behind the magnificent Piazza del Popolo with its fountains and Rome's oldest obelisk (a two-minute stroll away). It's an excellent location for sightseeing with the beautiful Villa Borghese, a mere five-minute saunter and the Spanish steps, a ten-minute wander. Or check out the splendour of one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Trevi fountain, which is under twenty minutes on foot. Inside this stylish home, while the Louis XVI period antiques catch the eye initially (and deservedly so – they are stunning), this apartment also incorporates more modern features, such as the sleek bathrooms. After a busy day, relax in the chromotherapy shower or let your host organise a private chef to prepare some classic Roman dishes for you and your guests. With its eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary design, this home offers something a little bit different from your standard place in the city.

Tucked behind the ruins of the Mausoleum of Augustus, this sumptuous flat is just five minutes on foot from the Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Medici. Rome is truly your oyster from this central spot – excellent restaurants, must-see landmarks, fashionable boutiques on Via dei Condotti and lively wine bars are practically on your doorstep. 

But location isn't the only reason we love this apartment. Step through the front door and you'll find a space richly classical in its design, with marble, gold and florals at the fore. Although the style is straight out of the 1800s, we found it very welcoming and contemporary. We enjoyed rustling up dinner in the sleek, compact and fully-equipped kitchen, followed by lounging on the sofa with a glass of wine. The main bedroom suite is also a favourite – not only is the bed comfortable, but the en-suite bathroom has a chromotherapy rainfall shower that feels like heaven after a long day on your feet.

With prints from Piranesi, Cambellotti and even Karl Lagerfeld, Jigsaw Frame is an art-lovers dream. Staying here, you get the sense of someone's home, rather than an anonymous holiday let. An air of quality greets you as you enter Curiosità. It’s well-designed and immaculately kept - you can really tell that the host is proud of this place - from the calming living room to the uncluttered kitchen. The mountains of cushions and the jacuzzi give the apartment a touch of the high-life, and the guest a chance to sit back and luxuriate after a long day. The only thing missing is a balcony, or some other sort of outside space, but making use of that would require tearing yourself away from the massive beds in the first place.

Stay in the centre of Rome and still feel like a local – it sounds almost like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? But at this apartment, just off the main track between the Pantheon and the Jewish Quarter, you’ll find yourself an easy three-minute walk from the Pantheon, five minutes from Piazza Navona, eleven minutes to the Trevi Fountain and twelve minutes to the Roman Forum. But unlike other parts of the city, locals don’t avoid your street – in fact, they dine right near it. Explore the best of Rome from this bright, charming home. We love the parquet flooring and the small but perfectly outfitted patio – it’s the ideal spot for an evening aperitif. If you crave more sunshine, the apartment has access to a shared rooftop patio with beautiful sunset views. And at the end of a long day spent exploring the Eternal city, you’ll find thoughtfully laid out bedrooms with lovingly restored antique furniture.

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

There are 'holiday homes' and holiday 'homes' – while the first functions as little more than a bed for the night, the second offers you a chance to experience a more authentic, everyday experience in your destination of choice. This cosy, city-centre apartment definitely falls into the latter category, and it's all the better for it. Of course, there are places you could stay closer to the most famous tourist sights, but here you have the chance to get stuck into real Roman life. Testaccio is the historic home of Rome's slaughterhouses. Once upon a time, its distinctive offal-based cuisine was served out of necessity. Nowadays, it has been elevated to a gourmet delicacy. For lunch, walk ten minutes to Trentatre, a chic cafeteria-style restaurant that serves up wholesome, seasonal dishes at incredibly competitive prices. For food on the go, pick up a trapizzino – a pizza pocket stuffed with sweetmeats. Alternatively, grab a seat at Checchino Dal 1887. Nowhere better represents the area than this six-generation family-owned and operated eatery. If the local cuisine inspires you, it’s easy to imagine yourself swanning through the local food markets and chatting to the vendors before whipping up dinner in the flat. With its innovative trattorias and cool craft breweries, a short five-minute walk to trendy Trastevere offers an entirely different atmosphere. And if you do need to get to the centre, it’s just a few stops on the metro.

We’ll admit it; an apartment this big in central Rome is a rare find indeed. Add in an attentive host, rooftop views and stylish decor and you know you’re onto a winner. The living area is a social space, perfect for big groups who want to spend time together. White, leather L-shaped sofas create the chill-out lounge and a mulberry-purple kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast. Bedrooms are a medley of mezzanine spots and private king-size suites. The real boon is you’re looking out over Piazza Sforza Cesarini here, the heart of the action in the central Ponte neighbourhood. A seven-minute walk sees you at the pavement cafés and buzzing bars of Piazza Navona, and the ancient site of the Pantheon is fifteen minutes on foot.

Plucked straight from your typical Italian reverie comes this picture-perfect home in the heart of papal Rome. Just a thirty-minute wander to the Vatican City and its glorious St. Peter's Basilica, this location is in a quiet and friendly neighbourhood with a local vibe. Back home, it's a real crowd-pleaser, despite not having a conventional lounge seating area. Come together around the reclaimed wood dining table – complete with elegant ghost chairs – and map out the day's tourist itinerary over a hearty breakfast. It's a well-kept, clean and comfortable space with heaps of Italian passion and charm. Walking around the apartment, you'll notice all the bedrooms come with grand four-poster beds and William Morris floral wallpaper prints that we really loved. Last but certainly not least, you'll have access to a private terrace – we could think of nothing better than watching sunsets out here with a glass of Barolo in hand. Plus, your host Giorgia, really has all the traits you’d want from a host – a keen eye for design, a professional attitude, but also a friendly one. If you’re lucky, you might get a little taste of the best wines from Puglia sent over.

Decked out in intense colours and on the fourth floor with no lift, Gladiator Stripes isn’t one for the faint-hearted. We’re big fans of the look though, and it’s clear that the place is very well-kept. The host, Mary, also pushes the boat out when it comes to service - there’s a daily cleaning service and someone at reception until 11pm, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about.

In a little old palazzo in the heart of Trastevere, Soft Pastelli is a sweet apartment - not massive but plenty of room for what it is. The walls are painted in lovely pastels, giving it an old-fashioned (in the best way) feel and each bedroom also has an en-suite, so there’ll be no waiting for the shower. The only real issue with Soft Pastelli is the lack of natural light, which is a very common problem in the neighbourhood due to the old buildings and narrow alleyways.

The quantity of blue on display in Neptune isn’t for the faint-hearted. In all seriousness, it’s this theme that actually elevates the place and makes it unique. It’s certainly small – the lack of a living room isn’t ideal, it’s true – but the decorations, largely inspired by the hosts travels, are all rather tasteful, and contribute to the individuality of the place. The location’s also worth mentioning – it’s not particularly central, but the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is right there, as is the Egyptian obelisk, which is the largest in the world.


Neptune

The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

Despite its diminutive footprint, this city-centre apartment is packed with interesting oddities from all over the world. While this could lead to clashing styles in less careful hands, the design is surprisingly cohesive throughout. In addition, the apartment is set in a historic eighteenth-century building right in the middle of bohemian Monti, one of the city's oldest residential yet most soulful areas. You're in the centre of a triangle that includes the Roman Forum, Colosseum and Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore. Each of these standout sights is within a ten-minute walk of your front door. You're spoiled for choice when it comes to excellent eateries nearby – tuck into a mouthwatering menu of hearty dishes at Ai Tre Scalini, indulge in timeless classics at Roman institution La Carbonara and enjoy expertly crafted dishes and local wine at Aromaticus. To top it all off, Tania is a great host – where else would you find a freshly baked cake waiting for you on arrival?

The Happy Couple

There isn’t much that’s more Italian than a Vespa, and Farobasso has two of them. These are the most eye-catching vintage objects in the apartment, but there are many more - the host has tied the theme together nicely. The entire place has been recently redone, and you can tell from the excellent condition it’s in - the bathrooms in particular feel spotless. However, Farobasso is a way out of the historic centre. It might be well-placed to visit the Vatican, but to get to the Trevi fountain, or the Colosseum, you might be tempted to commandeer one of the scooters.

Gladiator Reef is not one that will appeal to people who are after neutral tones and understated design. There’s a mix of bright colours all over the place, and this gives the space a bit of individuality. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also only a few hundred metres from the Colosseum.

Despite only being a twenty-three-minute walk from the Vatican, this is a cute and surprisingly calming flat. It's housed in an early 20th-century building with heaps of Roman character, and yet modern and cosy inside with its playful pink colour scheme, light wood flooring and tasteful artwork.  After an afternoon taking in the delights of St. Peter's Basilica, devouring all sorts of pizza and limoncello-based drinks, return to the light and airy living space with a chic pink dining table at its core – perfect for coming together for a well-needed cuppa and a slice of a cake. Sitting down to relive the best parts of the day, you'll notice the low-hanging lighting, antique mirrors and retro drinks trolley in the corner. This home cuts no corners when it comes to the little touches. Wandering into the bedrooms you'll find original patterns and vibrant wallpaper prints that remind us of a bygone era. Those lucky enough to be residing in the master bedroom will have the luxury of a private dining table for those romantic morning coffees in bed. Well-rested and full of caffeine, discover the tranquillity and local vibe of the surrounding area. Bordering the River Tiber's west bank, Prati is an art nouveau neighbourhood with alfresco wine bars, stylish cocktail lounges and fine-dining restaurants dotted around its relatively tourist-free boulevards.

There’s an air of graceful elegance to this home located in Rome’s Valle Aurelia neighbourhood, directly behind the Vatican. Bright and welcoming, you’ll immediately be drawn to the main open-plan living area where large glass doors lead out onto a private balcony. Enjoy your morning espresso here while catching up on the day’s news or sip sunset aperitifs before heading out for dinner at a local trattoria. With two comfortable bedrooms – one of which has a vanity desk should you need to catch up on work – you’ve got everything you need for a relaxing, care-free stay. Outside of your home, Vatican City with its famous Saint Peter's Basilica is a thirty-minute walk away, Monte Ciocci Park is a thirteen-minute stroll and thanks to the metro station that’s a four-minute walk away, you can be in Rome’s historic centre in less than thirty minutes.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.


Milliner

Being a resolute decision maker is probably the best quality one could have and it is with practical clarity that the designers who decorated this functional home, approached the job. This to say that if the general feel you are after in a home is luxuriant decadence, you should definitely keep looking. But if efficiency and comfort are your operational words, you might just as well stop here. With all the main sights at a stroll's distance, comfy sofas, and a private little terrace, you really might have found yourself a deal.

In among the original hills of Rome, The Bathhouse is completely surrounded by history. On one side, the Nero’s infamous palace – the Domus Aurea – and on the other, the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums. Its position alone would sell, but the flat itself is not underwhelming. It has lovely views, and the kitchen is pretty big for a place of its size. There’s an antique desk in the corner, which although not making as much sense as a breakfast table, is far prettier.

This bold little place isn’t aimed at fans of neutral tones and understated design. Deep colours are everywhere, and they really help the apartment stand out from the crowd. It's not a huge space but it's extremely well laid-out and the lack of a seating area indoors is more than made up for by having a balcony with seats outside. The kitchenette is pretty well-equipped for its size and there's a little dining spot just for two. The host, Maria, really pushes the boat out when it comes to service – there’s a daily cleaning service, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also only a couple of minutes walk from the Colosseum.

Despite a small footprint, Saguaro makes great use of the space it has. The mezzanine creates a feeling of openness while the colours brighten the place. We also really liked Iacopo, who we found really patient and helpful (even for a Plum host). The area is an interesting one, and depending on your point of view, could be considered a downside, as it’s a bit out of many of the main tourist hotspots. It is, however, an opportunity to experience Rome as a Roman would, free from the crowds and vendors.


Saguaro

Between Regola and the medieval alleys of the old Jewish Quarter, this gorgeous apartment is set within a 14th-century building tucked out of the way in the heart of historic Rome. 

The interior is perfectly pieced together and designed with your needs in mind. We were big fans of the interior design, particularly the accent wallpaper that makes the green theme pop.

A well-equipped kitchen elevates your self-catering options – though with all that fantastic food on your doorstep, who's cooking? Finally, a gorgeous blue bedroom lends a sophisticated air to the apartment and an air of calmness and serenity to help you slip off speedily.

Down at street level, you'll find several cafes and restaurants just around the corner, while trendy Trastevere is just a five-minute stroll across the Ponte Garibaldi. Elsewhere, the historic shopping street, Via Giulia, is 500m from your front door, while the likes of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum are all under a kilometre away.

Naive Neon

Between the old Jewish Quarter and the riverside alleys of Regola, Naive Melody is at the centre at what was the heart of medieval Rome. It was in spotless condition when we arrived, and if you were inclined to stay in, rather than explore the neighbourhood, there’s a 70” TV with Netflix to keep you busy. No one lives in the flat full time, but this isn’t necessarily a problem as Giulia, your host, is a delight – really helpful and forthcoming.


Naive Melody

There’s no point beating around the bush that the interiors here aren’t the most impressive in our collection. Having said that though, this home boasts a huge private terrace that guests can make use of most of the year. On top of that, the kitchen and bathroom are both modern and the bed is very comfortable. If more than two guests stay here, they’ll need to sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but this is a small price to pay for the outstanding location. Tucked away between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna, this is one of Rome’s most impressive neighbourhoods. 

The Roman Cavallo

With its quaint cobblestone streets, bearing a delightful tangle of ochre-hued architecture, artisan cafes and vintage boutiques, the residential district of Monti offers a community feel and proximity to the main sights. You'll find this home tucked away in this creative part of town, just behind Oppian Hill. Here, you're within a ten-minute walk from the Colosseum, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major and the Roman Forum. 

Inside, it's a timeless combination of white walls, wooden floors and high ceilings. Newly renovated interiors promise a want-for-nothing stay, especially in the bathrooms – beautifully decorated and equipped with contemporary fixtures. We especially love the open-plan living area, with its cosy lounge and fully-equipped kitchen. Here, floods of sunlight stream through the large windows, creating a peaceful atmosphere primed for relaxation. Spend mornings roosted around the dining table for espressos and pastries before slipping out for a day of exploring.
