The famous Cinque Terre route is an ideal day trip, where colourful fishing villages dot the cliffs. This villa would suit those that don’t like a lot of clutter as it is sparsely furnished with the essentials for a holiday in the sun. It consists of a main villa with a large living room, fully-equipped kitchen and dining for the group, plus a separate dependence with its own small kitchen and living room. The highlight is the private pool with loungers and dining on the terrace as the Ligurian hills rise in the background.

The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

This fairy tale tower is the perfect place for a unique, romantic getaway. Located in picturesque Porto Venere, you’ll have four floors to yourselves here, including a roof terrace with sea views. The stone tower, which dates back to 1161, boasts a marble dining table – perfect for pasta for two – a Jacuzzi bathtub, and a wine cellar. To make your stay even more special, your host provides breakfast and can help arrange a variety of treats, such as a private chef to cook for you at home. The tower is a destination in itself, but if you can tear yourselves away, you’ll find a pretty harbour, Medieval buildings, and a viewpoint overlooking the Ligurian Sea nearby.

Farmhouse charm still radiates from this stone-built villa near Montemarcello village. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. Add in the ochre-hued, quintessentially Italian exterior and the other charming terraces, and you can see why it caught our eye.

Enjoy an idyllic Italian getaway at this gorgeous traditional villa, providing glorious views of the Gulf of Poets and the leafy Ligurian countryside. Sitting up on an elevated position just outside La Spezia, and surrounded by olive groves, this home is the perfect peaceful retreat for when you want to explore the hills and valleys of rural Italy.

Inside, you'll find beautiful farmhouse interiors that have an almost fairytale feel, with original features that have been recently restored, along with exposed stone walls, wood beam ceilings and grand brick archways. The kitchen area is great for cooking up all your favourite meals during your stay, with a dining set where you can tuck in with family and friends.

You'll be utterly charmed by the outside areas, too – there's a private pool here that's surrounded by sun loungers, so you can spend the day alternating between soaking up the sunshine and cooling off in the water. This sleek and modern stonehouse is perched on the hillside of Corniglia, one of the Cinque Terre localities. Surrounded by a thousand square metres of olive trees, lemon, and orange groves, it offers panoramic views of the Ligurian Sea below. Spend your days exploring coastal trails, charming Cinque Terre villages, and sandy beaches. This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Set on a farm in Tuscany, this house blends rustic charms with a wealth of unforgettable experiences. Designed in classic Tuscan style, the stone walls house wooden beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. The house is one of six rooms and casitas, and guests have access to a vast, crystalline pool that overlooks the rolling hills and vineyards. The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

You will easily fall into the laidback Italian way of life here, and will come away feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Ensconced within a beautiful building dating back to the 1800s, this chic apartment seamlessly blends traditional with contemporary. It’s an ideal base for those seeking a stay near the sea, which you’ll see twinkling between the neighbouring buildings from the terrace. Speaking of which, the terrace is what caught our eye most about this home. It’s a generous size, just the spot for alfresco meals or simply soaking up the Tuscan sun with a good book in hand. Location-wise, the beach is a mere hop, skip and jump away, so if the sun gets a little much, you can cool off in the sea in no time.

Tranquil doesn’t even begin to describe this wonderful apartment. It’s tucked away in the hills above Bagni di Lucca, in a tiny village that’s quiet even in the height of summer. You’ll share the grounds and outdoor pool with four villas, but there’s plenty of space. Stunning views can be admired from almost every angle here, with far-reaching vistas of the surrounding hills and forests. The apartment is rustic in style, with exposed stone walls and terracotta floor tiles. It’s the perfect retreat for a romantic getaway.

Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. We love the master suite with its fireplace – a welcome feature during the cooler months. We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.
