What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. Admire the views from a lounger on the terrace, or head down to the pool, which stays relatively shady and cool thanks to the surrounding trees. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

Gazing out across the Mediterranean, this home places you in Porto Venere – recognised by the New York Times as one of the world's most beautiful spots. The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

We love the outdoor space here, which is well set up for lazy days by the pool and alfresco dining. Hikers will be pleased to hear that there are coastal walks aplenty nearby, and for days at the beach, you’ll find a choice of seaside towns within driving distance. We think this home provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful getaway with family or friends.

It’s charming, though a little dated in parts, and makes for a peaceful countryside stay. Nestled on a lush hillside overlooking the bay of San Michele di Pagana, it has a picturesque pool, stunning sea views from almost every angle, and plenty of space inside to make yourself comfy. We especially love the balconies off the bedrooms, where you can wake up to the sight and sound of the sun-kissed waves. All this, and it’s also walking distance to the beach, as well as shops, restaurants, and a supermarket. Day trips to Portofino (for designer shopping and yacht-spotting) and Genoa (for sightseeing in the Old City) are easy too.

A Seaside Getaway

Only a 100-metre stroll from Marina di Pietrasanta's beach, this villa is made for coastal-loving families. With the sea in walking distance and cities like Pisa and Lucca not far by car, we reckon most of your time will be spent exploring. But, if you're keen to enjoy a more relaxed pace, there's plenty to appreciate back home, too. The private terrace and small garden are perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine in the fresh air. Indoors, there's a cosy living room, a well-equipped kitchen, and three comfortable bedrooms – although air conditioning is only available in the hallway. We think it makes a great option for a Tuscan seaside retreat.

Ensconced within a beautiful building dating back to the 1800s, this chic apartment seamlessly blends traditional with contemporary. It’s an ideal base for those seeking a stay near the sea, which you’ll see twinkling between the neighbouring buildings from the terrace. Speaking of which, the terrace is what caught our eye most about this home. It’s a generous size, just the spot for alfresco meals or simply soaking up the Tuscan sun with a good book in hand. Location-wise, the beach is a mere hop, skip and jump away, so if the sun gets a little much, you can cool off in the sea in no time.

You'll love the views from this traditional villa in Garfagnana. Sweeping across the mountains in Castelnuovo Garfagnana towards Lucca in the south, it'll be hard to take your eyes off the rolling scenery. The best spot for gazing? We reckon it's the private pool, though the outlook from the loggia and terrace is just as lovely. It's not the most modern home, but it has a lot of heart – the rooms are cosy, comfortable, and packed with character. The location is convenient for exploring the area, too. Lucca, Barga, Castelnuovo Garfagnana, and many more hidden gems are easily discoverable by car.

Farmhouse charm still radiates from this stone-built villa near Montemarcello village. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

With a long history of literary greatness, Tuscany has inspired countless poets, playwrights, and authors, and we can see why just by looking at this home. Sonnets could be written about the outdoor area alone, with rhymes of fairy-lit patios, a long swimming pool and romantic woven wicker furniture. The interiors are similarly poetic, drawing on the building's 500-year-old history, with marble sculptures and glass chandeliers side by side with a huge wood-burning oven and stonework dating back to the 1500s. Countless stories have played out in the wooden-beamed bedrooms, with their plush, velvet head-boarded beds, ornate antique furniture and pretty French doors – move fast to nab the en-suite rooms which have deep claw-footed tubs or jacuzzi baths. What's really worth writing home about is the social space; from garden pergolas to grand dining rooms, this home will be recounted in tales for years to come.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

With beautiful views of the countryside from this home, this place is perfect for families or friends. There’s an above-ground swimming pool here set in a large garden, so there’s plenty of space to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Inside, the traditional interiors are typically Tuscan and provide a homely space. When you want to explore the location, historic Camaiore, with its many handicraft shops, is 1 kilometre away. Or, Viareggio is just over 10 kilometres from this place when you want a day at the beach.

Within the charming Liberty-style streets around you, there are myriad pizzerias and seafood restaurants for dining and cafes for espresso in the morning.

The apartment itself is an ideal city bolthole. Intricately carved teak furniture gives the open living room a Balinese calm feel and floor-to-ceiling corner windows keep things feeling light. The kitchen is sleek and modern, tucked away at the back and you can choose between the breakfast bar or dining table to uncork a bottle of local Sangiovese for social evenings in. We love the bedroom with the powder-blue feature wall and art nouveau paintings.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.
