In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

This modern villa enjoys a prime position, five minutes’ drive from the beaches of the Ligurian coast (Bocca di Magra is the closest). The famous Cinque Terre route is an ideal day trip, where colourful fishing villages dot the cliffs. This villa would suit those that don’t like a lot of clutter as it is sparsely furnished with the essentials for a holiday in the sun. It consists of a main villa with a large living room, fully-equipped kitchen and dining for the group, plus a separate dependence with its own small kitchen and living room. The highlight is the private pool with loungers and dining on the terrace as the Ligurian hills rise in the background.

Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.
