In the heart of Portovenere, this home's central location means you can drop your bags and stroll straight to the waterfront. Delicious Italian restaurants, historic landmarks, pebble beaches – whatever you fancy, exploring on foot is a breeze. It's certainly not the biggest apartment, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with the fantastic sea views from the balcony, stretching all the way to Palmaria Island – a must-visit while you're in town. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

For socialising altogether, you’ll find multiple spots around the gardens, with shaded terraces, alfresco dining spaces, a children’s playground, an outdoor exercise area and a private pool. This 18th-century farmhouse is on the traditional side, so expect some older features, though we think that’s part of the charm of this home. Conveniently located between Valdera, Volterra, San Gimignano, and Pisa, you’ll be able to make the most of the Tuscan countryside and vineyards here.

Located in the secluded countryside, halfway between Lucca and the beaches of Versili, this renovated Tuscan farmhouse is the ultimate Italian retreat. Situated on a hilltop, views are in abundance. Surrounding the villa, the grounds are the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee in the sun, and there's also a dining area outside under the pergola next to the original horse stable where you can tuck into breakfast. When you're not picnicking on the lawn, drive five minutes into nearby Lucca to explore the historic city. Take a walk on the Renaissance-era walls and try the city's traditional sweet bread, Buccellato. Stock up on local produce at one of the city's outdoor markets, and return to your villa to fire up the pizza oven. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany. 

Homespun Renaissance

This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones.
