In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

Perched on a hilltop above Santa Margherita Ligure, this villa puts you on the route of the Cinque Terre – five towns that cluster rainbow-bright around coves and harbours. It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. But the views are worth it – gaze out over the rooftops and shimmering sea from the sprawling terrace. It’s all about dining, reclining and unwinding in the pool or hot tub out here. Two kitchens (one indoors and one covered outdoors) will keep the chef of the group happy and sliding open the glass doors blends the terrace with the huge, open living room.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. End your day on the balcony, a glass of Italian wine in hand, as the sun sets over the coast.

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. Gazing out across the Mediterranean, this home places you in Porto Venere – recognised by the New York Times as one of the world's most beautiful spots. The large, south-facing windows really heat up the home, especially in summer – and with no air conditioning, you might find yourself spending more time on the balcony, enjoying cocktails as you look out across the sea. With ferries regularly departing between April and October, the Cinque Terre area is easily accessible here – though with a gorgeous beach just outside your front door, we wouldn't blame you for spending the lion's share of your time closer to home.

Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

There’s more than ample room for kicking back and relaxing, with an open-plan kitchen and dining room on the ground floor and a large and cosy living room on the first floor. Rustle up delicious feasts in the country-style kitchen and gather outside for wine and laughter under the stars. There’s also a barbecue out here to make those alfresco suppers even more fun.

The three downstairs bedrooms boast kitchenettes, while the upstairs shares a large kitchen – it's easy to break off into groups and enjoy your own space here. For a day trip, take the 45-minute drive to Cinque Terre, a picturesque series of five seaside towns.

A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

Rustic and welcoming, this home stands amid woodlands in a secluded spot in Lunigiana. Its setting halfway between Cinque Terre and Versilia makes it an ideal base for days out. Though with views of the Apuan Alps and a private pool to enjoy, you might find that you don’t want to move an inch off the property. This home is spread between the main villa and a guest house, so it’s ideal for two families travelling together, or a group of friends. Each building has its own alfresco dining area, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. This is a traditional Tuscan home, so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern look.
