In the exclusive Portofino peninsula, this villa is a ten-minute walk from the harbour's designer shops and seafood restaurants. You'll have private access to the sea on a small rocky platform, and the large terrace is shaded by century-old wisteria with space for alfresco dining. Some of the decor is a little dated and won't be to everyone's taste, but all the bedrooms have lovely sea views. Parking is limited, and although the sea is on your doorstep, it's worth noting that the nearest beach is best reached by public transport.

It’s a six-minute walk into the charming town centre for meals on the waterfront, just remember it’s a steep walk back up the hill. This villa is a dreamy destination for an idyllic holiday on the Italian Riviera. Nestled on a lush hillside overlooking the bay of San Michele di Pagana, it has a picturesque pool, stunning sea views from almost every angle, and plenty of space inside to make yourself comfy. We especially love the balconies off the bedrooms, where you can wake up to the sight and sound of the sun-kissed waves. All this, and it’s also walking distance to the beach, as well as shops, restaurants, and a supermarket. Day trips to Portofino (for designer shopping and yacht-spotting) and Genoa (for sightseeing in the Old City) are easy too.

It will be hard to tear yourself away from the sea views at this hillside villa. Separated into the main villa and an annexe, this home used to be a traditional farmhouse and has been lovingly restored with modern amenities while retaining charming features like the exposed wooden beams, stone fireplace, and the original majolica tiles. The villa's gardens extend down the hillside, bordered by Mediterranean plants and herbs, ending in a swimming pool with views over the town. Relax in the shade of a tree with a book, before enjoying lunch on the outdoor terrace. Each of the bedrooms catches the Mediterranean light with their whitewashed walls, and one of the rooms even features an original fireplace. If you don't fancy trying the antique 'runfò Genovesi' (Genoese oven), the kitchen also features a gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, and fridge, and there's a barbecue for a good old-fashioned grill night. Don't leave without trying some of Recco's most famous delicacy, focaccia col formaggio – a delicious focaccia with local cheese. End your day on the balcony, a glass of Italian wine in hand, as the sun sets over the coast.

Fire up the barbie and enjoy alfresco dinners on the patio or strike a pose on the lounger as the kids splash about in the salt-water swimming pool. We loved throwing open the French doors and drinking in the views of the glittering coastline.

Although the home is dedicated to alfresco living, you'll find the interior just as pleasing – there are five bedrooms to choose from, each one decorated in a soothing palette of neutrals. The home is divided into two individual apartments allowing for privacy whichever way you want to cut it. At dusk, when the winds whip up from the sea, step inside and snuggle by the fireplace and watch on as twinkling stars come out to play.

A beach lover's paradise, there are three to choose from in the nearby vicinity. We adored the convenience of stepping from the manicured lawn to the short six-minute walk to Bagni La Rotondo Beach. If you can drag yourself away from this nautical playground, then Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is a twelve-minute car ride away.

What this home may lack in style, it makes up for in location. Nestled in the hills of Moneglia, it commands views across the bay and is well-connected by train to Genoa and the coastal villages of the Cinque Terre. The furnishings are a little dated, but at least there are sea views in the upper bedrooms, while the large sliding glass doors mean you're never far away from a sunny seat. Plus, the glass dining table comfortably seats your entire group, so you can also enjoy meals together – that's if you don't wander into Moneglia to try one of the restaurants on the palm-tree-lined streets.

Overlooking the waters of Porto Venere Harbour and just a flip-flop from a small beach, this traditional home is the perfect maritime retreat. You can watch all the nautical action unfold from your bougainvillea-clad balcony. Or take a ten-minute amble along the coast to the village’s history-rich centre – it’s been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. While the coastal-themed interiors are charming, they will feel dated for some. The bedroom layouts are a little quirky, too, with the main bedroom sleeping three and the final single bed tucked away in the hallway. But we can let that slide for a home with such a one-of-a-kind setting.

You can enjoy a quiet, rural location yet it’s just a fifteen-minute drive into the centre of Asti, known as the City of 100 towers in its medieval heart. Perhaps pick up a bottle of chilled, sparkling Asti and bring it back to enjoy on the terrace of your grand, Italian country home. There’s an outdoor dining table on the swimming pool terrace that overlooks the forest just begging for an evening tipple, or perhaps a barbecue dinner if you’ve been truffle hunting in the area. Inside, it’s the careful renovation of the home’s original features that really make this place stand out. Hand-painted frescoes on walls, corniced ceilings like the icing on a wedding cake and vintage mosaic tiles underfoot. This home is spread between the main villa and a guest house, so it’s ideal for two families travelling together, or a group of friends. Each building has its own alfresco dining area, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. This is a traditional Tuscan home, so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern look.

This lovely waterfront apartment has wonderful Mediterranean Sea views from its small balcony (there’s room though for four guests on the comfy alfresco sofas). You can enjoy the vistas from the living space too. Out and about, you’re just a one-minute stroll from a rocky beach and a ten-minute walk from a sandy beach, while it's just 500 metres to beautiful Porto Venere and 13 kilometres to the port city of La Spezia. The Green Indus

Farmhouse charm still radiates from this stone-built villa near Montemarcello village. A handful of shops and restaurants are a five-minute walk away and just outside the villa, a (very steep) path leads down to Punta Corvo's Beach. The colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and within day-tripping distance too. In season, the private pool offers a place to cool off and you’ll find several outdoor lounges and dining spots in the shade around the quiet garden. Put the full kitchen through its paces by hiring a private chef. It’s a fairly higglety-pigglety layout, owing to the age of the building, and you’ll find three bedrooms in the main villa and a fourth bedroom in a separate garden apartment.

Fantastic views and spots to enjoy the Italian warmth abound in this two-storey villa in Liguria. The open-plan living space catches the sun, though we'd prefer to spend our time outside here – with the alfresco dining area in a high-up spot, you get stunning views of the local area as you gulp down Italian cocktails, and the large pool speaks for itself. With the hilly terrain and winding roads, a car is essential here – the closest supermarkets and restaurants are a 7km drive. Further afield, you can head to picturesque Cinque Terre or even cross over into nearby Tuscany.

Set amongst rolling Tuscan hills, it's not hard to see why this villa caught our attention. The gorgeous pool lets you unwind, while the al fresco dining area is the perfect way to combine the view, the weather, and the food – you can even book a private chef through your host. Inside, sofa beds around the home provide flexible sleeping arrangements, perfect for groups of friends. The three downstairs bedrooms boast kitchenettes, while the upstairs shares a large kitchen – it's easy to break off into groups and enjoy your own space here. For a day trip, take the 45-minute drive to Cinque Terre, a picturesque series of five seaside towns.

This may not be an ultra-modern villa, but if it’s charm and homeliness you’re after, this place has them in spades. 

There’s more than ample room for kicking back and relaxing, with an open-plan kitchen and dining room on the ground floor and a large and cosy living room on the first floor.
