Inside, the open-plan living and kitchen isn’t the most palatial, and that canary yellow bedroom might be too perky for some. That said, it’s all beautifully cared for and perfect for a small family sharing. Nestled in the quaint village of Perledo, you’ve got all of Lake Como’s best bits within easy reach, starting with Varenna, just a short drive away. Or hop on the nearby ferry to other hotspots including Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan.

Set in the town of Menaggio with its lakeside promenade, you’ll have plenty to occupy your time or go for a scenic hike in the nearby mountains. Combining tradition and contemporary comfort, the rooms are well suited to groups in search of ease and relaxation. Highlights include the sweet little balcony and the views, plus your host can arrange welcome packs and housekeeping. It’s worth noting the stairs do not have a handrail so this may not be the best option for families with young children, but you will find this is a great base for a lakeside adventure. From here, it’s a short stroll to cafes, bars and restaurants, while the ferry is just 400 metres away.

If you want the best of Lake Como at your feet, this Bellano historic centre gem wins hands down. The apartment is mere steps from the lakeside squares for people watching and sundowners, and when it's time to head upstream to Menaggio, Bellagio, and beyond, the ferry port is just 200 metres from your door. Back home, the handsome palazzo exteriors make all the right first impressions. It's worth noting that if six of you share, the last two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living area. There's also no outdoor space to speak of here. But the views of Bellano's rooftops and church tower from the bedroom are a lovely touch.

Nestled in the heart of Varenna, this apartment oozes elegance with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and views over San Giorgio Square. You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here. 

In the Heart of Varenna

This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

And trust us, they are definitely impressive, but we love the interior here, too. The Larian architectural style is unique to this area – features like arched doorways, brick ceilings and terracotta flooring are warm, cosy and characterful. Multiple living areas filled with antiques give guests plenty of space to spread out, while the kitchen has all the crockery and cookware you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast (there's also a wood oven and a barbecue outside fit for alfresco dining). Whether you're working at the desk or playing a game of pool, this feels like a real family home. 

When you fancy exploring, nearby Santa Maria Rezzonico is one of the most idyllic areas of the lake, with a small cove where you can swim in the blue water. Ten minutes by car is Menaggio – head there for delicious eateries, local shops and the ferry terminal – while picturesque Belaggio is forty minutes away. And of course, a trip out on Lake Como itself is a must – it’s the perfect place to soak up the scenery.

This charming home is located in peaceful Dervio, just a short walk from the town centre and the shores of Lake Como. The apartment is rustic and traditional, a comfortable base for a family, though at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living space. That minor inconvenience is immediately forgotten on arrival, when the stunning mountain vista comes into view. Admire the views from the lush, plant-filled garden, with its above-ground pool and deck chairs, or in the veranda, a peaceful spot for a morning coffee. 

Lakeside Green

This Italian cottage is located in San Siro, at the foot of a mountain, 1.5 kilometres from Lake Como. While its sloping surroundings might be hard on the legs, they make for great views – you can even see the lake from the home’s private terrace. Two of the bedrooms here are interconnected, so aren’t completely private, and the stairs leading up to them are very steep. We think these rooms are best suited to a family with older children. Golf enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that there’s a golf course 13 kilometres away. And for days out with the kids, head to Lido di Menaggio, an 8-kilometre drive, where you’ll find swimming pools, a sandy beach, and children’s activities.

It has to be the outdoor space. An expansive terrace offers alfresco dining opportunities and views across Lake Como, while the Jacuzzi is just the spot for relaxing after a busy day. And with bikes and kayaks available here, exploring the local area comes easily.

Situated right on the western shore of the beloved Lake Como, this apartment overlooks the lake from the balcony – ideal for a peaceful morning coffee out in the fresh air. Only a few meters from the beach, the location also puts you within easy driving distance of bars, restaurants and the golf course in Menggio, and Como City is great for a day trip. You can take one of three kayaks out onto the water, but with them being shared with the other apartment, you best be quick or opt for a bicycle to explore the surroundings instead.
