If you want the best of Lake Como at your feet, this Bellano historic centre gem wins hands down. The apartment is mere steps from the lakeside squares for people watching and sundowners, and when it's time to head upstream to Menaggio, Bellagio, and beyond, the ferry port is just 200 metres from your door. Back home, the handsome palazzo exteriors make all the right first impressions. It's worth noting that if six of you share, the last two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living area. There's also no outdoor space to speak of here. But the views of Bellano's rooftops and church tower from the bedroom are a lovely touch.

You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here.

To say the views of Lake Como seen from this apartment are remarkable is an understatement. It’s a panorama best admired from the private wraparound balcony or the complex's shared poolside. Inside, the open-plan living and kitchen isn’t the most palatial, and that canary yellow bedroom might be too perky for some. That said, it’s all beautifully cared for and perfect for a small family sharing. Nestled in the quaint village of Perledo, you’ve got all of Lake Como’s best bits within easy reach, starting with Varenna, just a short drive away. Or hop on the nearby ferry to other hotspots including Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan.

This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

Views of Lake Como don't come much better than this – and neither do penthouse locations. You're within walking distance of Fiumelatte for evening meals and the train station (just 300 metres away) for trips to nearby historic Varenna. Rather travel by boat? Hop on the ferry (a three-kilometre drive away) to glitzy Bellagio and beyond. Back home, the main bedroom suite, with its dressing area and Jacuzzi for two, more than delivers. However, it's worth noting that the headspace in the mezzanine second bedroom is low and better suited for children. But for those jaw-dropping views from the private terrace, we can forgive that.

Set on the western shore of Lake Como, this modern apartment boasts views across Menaggio marina. Inside, the home doesn’t try to compete with the beauty outdoors, with simple interiors offering a comfortable stay for extended families or groups of friends. But the cherry on the cake? It has to be the outdoor space. An expansive terrace offers alfresco dining opportunities and views across Lake Como, while the Jacuzzi is just the spot for relaxing after a busy day. Only a few meters from the beach, the location also puts you within easy driving distance of bars, restaurants and the golf course in Menggio, and Como City is great for a day trip. You can take one of three kayaks out onto the water, but with them being shared with the other apartment, you best be quick or opt for a bicycle to explore the surroundings instead.

No matter the hour of day or time of year, this 19th-century stone home overlooking Lake Como is a dream come true. Breakfast on the terrace in the crisp morning breeze, lunch by the sparkling pool, dinner under the pergola while the sun sets over the mountains – you'll be able to make the most of those sensational views all day long. And trust us, they are definitely impressive, but we love the interior here, too. The Larian architectural style is unique to this area – features like arched doorways, brick ceilings and terracotta flooring are warm, cosy and characterful. Multiple living areas filled with antiques give guests plenty of space to spread out, while the kitchen has all the crockery and cookware you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast (there's also a wood oven and a barbecue outside fit for alfresco dining). Whether you're working at the desk or playing a game of pool, this feels like a real family home. 

When you fancy exploring, nearby Santa Maria Rezzonico is one of the most idyllic areas of the lake, with a small cove where you can swim in the blue water. Ten minutes by car is Menaggio – head there for delicious eateries, local shops and the ferry terminal – while picturesque Belaggio is forty minutes away. After being occupied by the same family for five generations, this home lay uninhabited for several decades before it was treated to a complete renovation. Today, the thought that this remarkable home lay unappreciated for so long makes us slightly sad.

The views alone are worth a stay here. From the two terraces, you get a sensational panorama of Lake Como, the mountains surrounding the waters and some of the local area's spectacular buildings, like Villa Balbianello. With a pair of loungers and an alfresco dining table, you can pass hours upon hours with this backdrop for company.

Back inside the home, some period features, like the exposed brickwork, have been tastefully retained, while many of the more modern additions are vintage in style, such as the copper bathtub in one of the bedrooms, the tiled flooring and the mighty wooden dining table. The kitchen is as contemporary as they come, however.

The local village of Mezzegra on your doorstep has restaurants, a bakery and a handful of historic churches to wander between. The banks of the lake can also be reached in ten minutes on foot, while Monte Crocione sits behind the property if you're up for a challenge.

Petite and pretty, you'll find this home right on the edge of Lake Como, near the centre of Tremezzo. It's ideal for couples or very small families who are looking for some peace and quiet to enjoy this idyllic corner of Italy. 

The kitchen is ready for you to whip up some delicious meals, or simply arrange some antipasti, depending on what you feel like. Mix an Aperol Spritz and head out to the patio to enjoy your apperitif in the fresh air with a view of the lake – your host will even provide comfortable deckchairs and tables. If you need to catch up on emails then there's a dedicated workspace, and at the end of the day you'll love curling up in the perfect pink bedroom. 

You can walk to the centre of Tremezzo and the famous Villa Carlotta in only eight minutes from here, and you're also close to Scalo di Villa Carlotta ferry landing, which can take you around the lake to several points of interest. Plus, the city centre of Como is around a forty-minute drive away – visit the cathedral and wander along the promenade before you hop on the funicular railway for an excellent view.

On the slopes of Lake Como, this villa is a short drive from the village of Colico (7 kilometres away) and the buzzing lakeside town of Varenna (14 kilometres away). The garden backs onto the lakeside, and you’ve got a view of the glassy water from the swimming pool and private hot tub – perfect after a day of watersports on the lake. Dining and sunning terraces take in the beautiful view from all levels. Inside, big windows in the bedrooms let you wake to a lake view. There’s a certain charm to the 1960s decor and the kitchen is sleek and modern – it comes pre-stocked with groceries and you'll be welcomed with a complimentary dinner.

Situated a stone’s throw from Lake Como and within walking distance of the charming town of Lierna, this apartment guarantees peace and quiet for a small family or close-knit group of friends. The living space and main bedroom benefit from views of the water, and if you want to get a closer look, we recommend heading down to the communal garden and swimming pool. Keen to put your feet up as soon as you arrive? Your host provides a welcome pack as an optional add-on.

Lake Daydream

This Italian cottage is located in San Siro, at the foot of a mountain, 1.5 kilometres from Lake Como. While its sloping surroundings might be hard on the legs, they make for great views – you can even see the lake from the home’s private terrace. Two of the bedrooms here are interconnected, so aren’t completely private, and the stairs leading up to them are very steep. We think these rooms are best suited to a family with older children. Golf enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that there’s a golf course 13 kilometres away. And for days out with the kids, head to Lido di Menaggio, an 8-kilometre drive, where you’ll find swimming pools, a sandy beach, and children’s activities.

We defy anyone to look through this home's photos and not feel instantly at ease. It's something to do with the ample amounts of space, cleansing white walls and large arched windows that look out over rooftops and also flood the interior with sunshine.

The design is definitely sparse, although we think there are enough personal touches to ward off accusations of anonymity. The floral-style lampshade in the bedroom is eye-catching and we also like the vintage travel adverts hanging in frames on the wall.

However, don't be surprised if you don't actually spend all too much time in the apartment. The home's position in the Mezzegra region is simply gorgeous, helped by the fact that the banks of Lake Como can be reached in five minutes' walk. Villa del Balbianello takes forty-five minutes to reach on foot, while you catch a ferry to the town of Bellagio in just over an hour.

This 19th-century home is perfect for a group of friends or a large family looking to create Lake Como memories. Spreading out is easy with a collection of comfortable bedrooms (most of which have private bathrooms), though we reckon a majority of your time will be spent in the garden. Need a bit more space to soak up the scenery? A second terrace is perfect for just that. The living space is contemporary and comfortable, even with a sofa bed for two guests. It's worth noting that the owner lives on-site, but only a small garden is shared between you. Besides, with Lake Como a short walk away and Menaggio within driving distance, we think it ticks all the boxes.

If you're after a view, then you'll love this home in Dongo. Here, the beauty of the surrounding mountains accompanies a glimpse of Lake Como – if that's not an idyllic setting, we don't know what is. You can enjoy the scenery both indoors and out, whether you're cooling off in the private pool, nursing a glass of wine on the terrace, or unwinding in the contemporary living area. Just note that one guest will sleep on a sofa bed. When you're ready to explore, Menaggio is 13 kilometres away.

In the mountainous peninsula between the two “legs” of Lake Como, this villa sits in splendid isolation. Manicured gardens surround the traditionally ochre-hued villa where towering trees hide secret swings, picnic benches and even a spot for badminton. There’s a patio for dining in the sunshine and here you’ll hear nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong. 

An ivy-covered front and typically green-shuttered windows greet you at the end of a long driveway. Inside, terracotta floors keep things cool underfoot and wooden ceilings are reminiscent of the old world. A huge stone fireplace crowns the main lounge, complete with the villa’s old family crest. There are plenty of seating nooks tucked away in this home to hide with a good book. Chefs will love the traditionally Italian kitchen, which has been upgraded from its farmhouse days with granite worktops, but you can still feels the bones of the old kitchen in the wood-topped hearth (now home to a microwave and working bread oven). 

Dining can be a formal affair in the separate dining room, illuminated by a medieval-looking candelabra, or a casual breakfast just off the kitchen.

In terms of location, you’re secluded away between the mountains, but the shore of Lake Como is a short drive. Head to Bellagio, where cobbled streets lead to the lake shore and water taxis head out onto the water – it’s just a ten-minute drive away.

The furnished terrace is a lovely spot for alfresco meals and Aperols in the sunshine. Downstairs, you'll also have free access to the shared swimming pool for cooling off. At capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the communal living area – though there are no curtains, so if you're hoping to enjoy a lie-in, you might want to pack an eye mask. It's also worth noting that it takes a short drive to reach the surrounding provinces.

Perched on a promontory that juts out into Lake Como, this villa provides guests with plenty of opportunity to look out over stunning lakeside vistas, backgrounded by the mighty Alps. Below, the quaint village of Bellagio invitingly reveals its cobbled streets and elegant lakeside villas, completing the panoramic views.

The villa doesn’t just offer views, though. Its heated swimming pool allows you to see snowy mountain caps in perfect comfort, and inside you’ll be able to build up a sweat in your own private gym and Turkish sauna. 
In the evenings, once you’ve caught the sunset over Lake Como, you might want to make your way down into your wine cellar and enjoy the finest local wines, or head into Bellagio and sample its fantastic foods.

Although the villa offers tranquillity, you’re not far from the city either. Its location allows for short drives to cities like Milan, Bergamo, and Como, and you can also enjoy making the short trip across the border into Switzerland to visit Lugano.

The villa’s excellent location also invites you to enjoy hikes and boat trips around the lake, along with other outdoor activities such as tennis and golf.
