If you want the best of Lake Como at your feet, this Bellano historic centre gem wins hands down. The apartment is mere steps from the lakeside squares for people watching and sundowners, and when it's time to head upstream to Menaggio, Bellagio, and beyond, the ferry port is just 200 metres from your door. Back home, the handsome palazzo exteriors make all the right first impressions. It's worth noting that if six of you share, the last two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living area. There's also no outdoor space to speak of here. But the views of Bellano's rooftops and church tower from the bedroom are a lovely touch.

Inside, the open-plan living and kitchen isn’t the most palatial, and that canary yellow bedroom might be too perky for some. That said, it’s all beautifully cared for and perfect for a small family sharing. Nestled in the quaint village of Perledo, you’ve got all of Lake Como’s best bits within easy reach, starting with Varenna, just a short drive away. Or hop on the nearby ferry to other hotspots including Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan.

You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here.

If you’re looking for a home with a view, then how about this apartment, which has captivating Lake Como vistas from its small balcony? Inside, the open-plan living space sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full capacity. We love the outlook from the dining table here, too – at this home, you can create wonderful memories. Set in the town of Menaggio with its lakeside promenade, you’ll have plenty to occupy your time or go for a scenic hike in the nearby mountains. With its fantastic location, this apartment is the perfect retreat.

This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

Multiple living areas filled with antiques give guests plenty of space to spread out, while the kitchen has all the crockery and cookware you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast (there's also a wood oven and a barbecue outside fit for alfresco dining). Whether you're working at the desk or playing a game of pool, this feels like a real family home. 

When you fancy exploring, nearby Santa Maria Rezzonico is one of the most idyllic areas of the lake, with a small cove where you can swim in the blue water. Ten minutes by car is Menaggio – head there for delicious eateries, local shops and the ferry terminal – while picturesque Belaggio is forty minutes away. Whatever you get up to, this is the perfect spot for discovering Lake Como's treasures.

This Italian cottage is located in San Siro, at the foot of a mountain, 1.5 kilometres from Lake Como. While its sloping surroundings might be hard on the legs, they make for great views – you can even see the lake from the home’s private terrace. Two of the bedrooms here are interconnected, so aren’t completely private, and the stairs leading up to them are very steep. We think these rooms are best suited to a family with older children. Golf enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that there’s a golf course 13 kilometres away. And for days out with the kids, head to Lido di Menaggio, an 8-kilometre drive, where you’ll find swimming pools, a sandy beach, and children’s activities.

Views of Lake Como don't come much better than this – and neither do penthouse locations. You're within walking distance of Fiumelatte for evening meals and the train station (just 300 metres away) for trips to nearby historic Varenna. Rather travel by boat? Hop on the ferry (a three-kilometre drive away) to glitzy Bellagio and beyond. Back home, the main bedroom suite, with its dressing area and Jacuzzi for two, more than delivers. However, it's worth noting that the headspace in the mezzanine second bedroom is low and better suited for children. But for those jaw-dropping views from the private terrace, we can forgive that.

On the slopes of Lake Como, this villa is a short drive from the village of Colico (7 kilometres away) and the buzzing lakeside town of Varenna (14 kilometres away). The garden backs onto the lakeside, and you’ve got a view of the glassy water from the swimming pool and private hot tub – perfect after a day of watersports on the lake. Dining and sunning terraces take in the beautiful view from all levels. Inside, big windows in the bedrooms let you wake to a lake view. There’s a certain charm to the 1960s decor and the kitchen is sleek and modern – it comes pre-stocked with groceries and you'll be welcomed with a complimentary dinner.

You can practically taste the fresh air from this spot. Heading inside, this studio apartment boasts a surprising amount of space to spread out. The pristine white motif feels sunny and bright, with pops of lightwood and green pot plants adding something homely. In the kitchen, your host leaves some local goodies – balsamic vinegar, hazelnut cookies and fresh fruit – for your arrival. And espresso pods are at the ready for a coffee overlooking the water. You’re in the charming lakeside village of Moltrasio, where boats run from the nearby jetty across the lake to Bellagio (which you can see from your balcony) and there are a handful of gelato shops, old churches and lakeside cafés.

You can enjoy some lovely vistas from inside too. The open-plan living space is divided from the kitchen by a bookcase, which is handy as the living area doubles up as the sleeping quarters for guest three (on a single sofa bed). Location-wise, it’s fantastic as this home is in the centre of Varenna, around 200 metres from Piazza San Giorgio and 250 metres from Varenna train station. It’s also 10 metres from Lake Como and the ferry that connects Varenna to Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo.

There is also a communal swimming pool, two balconies and a terrace – making it easy to sit back and admire this stunning location. Inside, the rooms are minimal, fresh and well suited to families with the handy addition of a single sofa bed in the main bedroom. Private parking is available and you’ll find it easy to explore the lake thanks to the close proximity to the ferry pick up point. It’s also just 2 kilometres to the nearest train station meaning it’s possible to spend the day in nearby Lecco, Milan and Bergamo.

Admire the views of Lake Como from the communal pool or this home’s terrace – what a privileged spot this is. There’s plenty of room for dining and relaxing outside and there are vistas to enjoy from inside, too. This place is ideal for families as each bedroom has a double and single bed. When you feel like exploring, as you’re located in the central part of Lake Como known as the Golden Triangle, you’ll be able to visit Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio easily. Or let your host arrange some excursions such as some wine tasting or a tour of the Como Silk Museum.

The decor is on the simpler side, and being in an apartment building there is the potential for some noise from neighbours during your stay, but you'll be guaranteed a comfortable place to rest your head after a long day of exploring.
