The apartment is rustic and traditional, a comfortable base for a family, though at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living space. That minor inconvenience is immediately forgotten on arrival, when the stunning mountain vista comes into view. Admire the views from the lush, plant-filled garden, with its above-ground pool and deck chairs, or in the veranda, a peaceful spot for a morning coffee.

Nope, you're not seeing double. This home consists of two apartments, each with a kitchen and living area. The layout works well for a pair of families or a couple of couples keen on separate spaces. Even with two guests on a sofa bed in the downstairs lounge, it won't feel cramped. Of course, the star of the show is the private swimming pool. Summer days call for dips in the sunshine and barbecue dinners in the fresh air. The lake is also a short 150-metre walk away. Further afield, the towns of Bellano, Lecco, and Bellagio are within an hour's drive and offer excellent options for day trips.

If you want the best of Lake Como at your feet, this Bellano historic centre gem wins hands down. The apartment is mere steps from the lakeside squares for people watching and sundowners, and when it's time to head upstream to Menaggio, Bellagio, and beyond, the ferry port is just 200 metres from your door. Back home, the handsome palazzo exteriors make all the right first impressions. It's worth noting that if six of you share, the last two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living area. There's also no outdoor space to speak of here. But the views of Bellano's rooftops and church tower from the bedroom are a lovely touch.

Inside, the open-plan living and kitchen isn’t the most palatial, and that canary yellow bedroom might be too perky for some. That said, it’s all beautifully cared for and perfect for a small family sharing. Nestled in the quaint village of Perledo, you’ve got all of Lake Como’s best bits within easy reach, starting with Varenna, just a short drive away. Or hop on the nearby ferry to other hotspots including Lecco, Bergamo, and Milan.

The garden backs onto the lakeside, and you’ve got a view of the glassy water from the swimming pool and private hot tub – perfect after a day of watersports on the lake. Dining and sunning terraces take in the beautiful view from all levels. Inside, big windows in the bedrooms let you wake to a lake view. There’s a certain charm to the 1960s decor and the kitchen is sleek and modern – it comes pre-stocked with groceries and you'll be welcomed with a complimentary dinner.

Nestled in the heart of Varenna, this apartment oozes elegance with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and views over San Giorgio Square. You’ll need to climb stairs to this first-floor home, and there’s no air conditioning here, but step out onto the private terrace and you’ll feel the warm Italian breeze. Location-wise, you’ll see why this apartment caught our eye. Within walking distance of Lake Como, the sandy shores of Molo di Sotto beach, and a plethora of shops and Italian eateries, there’s plenty to occupy your time here.

If you’re looking for a home with a view, then how about this apartment, which has captivating Lake Como vistas from its small balcony? Inside, the open-plan living space sleeps two guests on a sofa bed at full capacity. We love the outlook from the dining table here, too – at this home, you can create wonderful memories. Set in the town of Menaggio with its lakeside promenade, you’ll have plenty to occupy your time or go for a scenic hike in the nearby mountains. With its fantastic location, this apartment is the perfect retreat.

This apartment sits in the heart of Varenna, a short walk from the picturesque Lake Como. Shops, restaurants, and the train station are also nearby, putting you in a prime position to explore both near and far. While the fuss-free interiors aren't the most exciting, we think this is a practical option for families and friends. The balcony is a lovely spot to relax with a glass of wine – even if it's overlooked a bit by neighbours – and the kitchen is a decent size if you want to prepare meals at home. With the double sofa bed in use, space will be tight, so we think it's best suited for four.

This Italian cottage is located in San Siro, at the foot of a mountain, 1.5 kilometres from Lake Como. While its sloping surroundings might be hard on the legs, they make for great views – you can even see the lake from the home’s private terrace. Two of the bedrooms here are interconnected, so aren’t completely private, and the stairs leading up to them are very steep. We think these rooms are best suited to a family with older children. Golf enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that there’s a golf course 13 kilometres away. And for days out with the kids, head to Lido di Menaggio, an 8-kilometre drive, where you’ll find swimming pools, a sandy beach, and children’s activities.

It's worth noting that the owner lives on-site, but only a small garden is shared between you. Besides, with Lake Como a short walk away and Menaggio within driving distance, we think it ticks all the boxes.

This delightful wooden home sits a short walk from the shores of Lake Como, in the pretty town of Colico. It’s a fifteen minute walk to the Colico ferry pier where you can hop on a water taxi to beautiful lakeside town like Varenna and Bellagio. Or, head away from the lakeside to discover the area’s hiking trails into the mountains, past castle ruins and old mills.

The home has an eco-friendly vibe with solar panels on the roof and the facade of a clapboard cabin. Set in a wooden deck, even the swimming pool feels natural. Admire the mountains rising around you from the comfort of a sun lounger, or set up for long lazy lunches at the poolside table, shaded by a parasol. Inside, the lounge is flooded with sunlight from two walls of glass, and the reclaimed wood walls and floors continue the eco theme. No matter the hour of day or time of year, this 19th-century stone home overlooking Lake Como is a dream come true. Breakfast on the terrace in the crisp morning breeze, lunch by the sparkling pool, dinner under the pergola while the sun sets over the mountains – you'll be able to make the most of those sensational views all day long. And trust us, they are definitely impressive, but we love the interior here, too. The Larian architectural style is unique to this area – features like arched doorways, brick ceilings and terracotta flooring are warm, cosy and characterful. Multiple living areas filled with antiques give guests plenty of space to spread out, while the kitchen has all the crockery and cookware you'll need to rustle up an Italian feast (there's also a wood oven and a barbecue outside fit for alfresco dining). Whether you're working at the desk or playing a game of pool, this feels like a real family home. 

When you fancy exploring, nearby Santa Maria Rezzonico is one of the most idyllic areas of the lake, with a small cove where you can swim in the blue water. Ten minutes by car is Menaggio – head there for delicious eateries, local shops and the ferry terminal – while picturesque Belaggio is forty minutes away. Whatever you get up to, this is the perfect spot for discovering Lake Como's treasures.

You can take one of three kayaks out onto the water, but with them being shared with the other apartment, you best be quick or opt for a bicycle to explore the surroundings instead.
