We loved the elevated shower cubicle behind the bed, though we recognise it won't appeal to everyone.

Enjoy leisurely strolls along the top of the walls, which offer stunning views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. The city's main square, Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, is a must-see and just a few hundred metres away. Additionally, the Basilica di San Frediano, the Cathedral of San Martino, and the Guinigi Tower are all shining examples of its awe-inspiring architecture.

But there are surprisingly modern pockets in this medieval wonderland. This apartment displays 21st-century sensibilities, while fully immersed in the historic walled city of Lucca. It’s less than a two-minute walk from the bustling main square, Piazza Napoleone, and seven from the wine bars and restaurants of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. And inside, traditional meets modern in an incredibly stylish manner. We love the bright, white lounge and open-plan kitchen, where vintage-style armchairs meet the angular lines of the high breakfast bar. Textiles such as velvet and rattan combine with wooden furniture to create a unique space, wrapped in understated luxury. While it's true that it's not one of the most characterful homes in the locale, there's much to like about it. The open living space is generously sized and benefits from lots of natural light, while the bedrooms are more minimalist in style. However, we'd be lying if we didn't say that the real star of the show is the rooftop terrace, on which you'll find an alfresco table treated to views of some of Lucca's towers.

When it comes to getting to know the destination, there are a wealth of churches and museums to visit on foot, as well as no shortage of bars and restaurants to frequent afterwards. Further afield, both Pisa and Viareggio are easily reachable, too.
