Found in a beautiful, early 1900s period building near the very heart of Milan, this home has a definite allure to it. Perhaps it's in the way it stays true to its roots with the parquet flooring and large, shuttered windows, or maybe it's in the elegance with which it has been renovated, or, it’s a very real possibility that the charm comes from the balance between the old and the new. 

Rise with the sun and open every window and balcony door to let the breeze carry in the sounds of Milan as you get to work on breakfast in the compact kitchen. Scramble eggs and brew fresh coffee to enjoy at the striking dining table. Read by the light of the window or, better yet, take your novel onto the balcony as you enjoy a drink with a good helping of fresh air and sunshine. 

Close to Central Station, Milan is at your fingertips and you can get anywhere in a matter of minutes by using public transport. If you’d like to explore everything on foot though, you can start by walking around thirty minutes toward Duomo to see the cathedral, and some of the other sites aren’t too far from there. Enjoy lunch out at one of the local restaurants before slowly making your way back to enjoy the sunset from the sofa with a glass of wine.

A small place that punches above its weight, Colour Reversal has been well designed, and that makes a lot of difference. The way that the kitchen fits in with the living room works perfectly from an aesthetic standpoint, and while having the kitchen and the sofa bed in the same room isn’t ideal, we wouldn’t really recommend using that bed anyway. It’s always nice to have the option, however, so we won’t complain.

Elegant and Milanese at heart, this colourful apartment is perfectly suited for larger groups who, while travelling together, would enjoy the extra privacy of individual bedrooms. Not only that, but each bedroom benefits from vibrant, vegetable-inspired artwork, pops of greens and blues, en-suite bathrooms and two of the rooms even boast four-poster beds. If you've got to work while during your stay, the dedicated office space is a bright and uplifting area to power through emails. Elsewhere, the communal area is a lovely space to come together and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off for the day's adventure. Walk to the Corso Buenos Aires shopping district in just twenty minutes, stop off at Via Tadino, an eleven-minute stroll away, for the best restaurants and bars this side of Milan, and be right around the corner from a mainline metro station that will have you discovering the iconic Duomo di Milano in under fifteen minutes.

A spacious and stylish apartment filled with natural light and bags of character, this home is located in an imposing traditional Milanese building right by the city's central train station. It makes a great first impression, with gleaming floors, stained glass windows and a characterful wooden elevator preparing you for what's the come. The cultured owners of this exquisite and soulful home are artsy types, as the original paintings sprinkled throughout the stunning communal areas – created by the host's artist father – or the built-in bookcases will attest. Given its location, transport connections are expectedly excellent, though you're not right in the centre if that's what you're specifically after. Instead, hop on the Metro to reach the heart of the city in under fifteen minutes. Alternatively, embark on a leisurely stroll to the likes of the Duomo di Milano in around forty minutes. Closer by, the likes of Via Tadino and Via San Gregorio – both around a ten-minute walk – have plenty of options when it comes to drinking and dining.

What makes Colour Inversion special is hard to put your finger on, but that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. Everything there is perfectly proportioned, so while it is a very small place (it can technically hold four people, but that would be a stretch), it never feels undersized. It’s also just off Corso Buenos Aires, one of the main shopping streets in the city and a lively spot in general.

Only a few minutes away from Centrale, Pastel Playground is well-connected to all parts of Milan and beyond. Considering the central location, this split-level home is a little oasis of tranquillity, which you’ll especially appreciate after a day of exploration. The lower level has a bright hangout spot with great natural light just by the stairs, but that’s not even the best part. The upstairs kitchen which transitions into a glasshouse dining room (and then a rooftop terrace) is quite the experience on its own. A welcoming atmosphere like this is hard to find.

You'll find this fuss-free apartment steps from Milan's Central Station. Though the nearby area lacks a little charm (and can be a tad noisy), getting around couldn't be more convenient – the Duomo is just a ten-minute metro ride away. Modern and practical, there's a sofa bed for two in the living area. The kitchen is compact yet equipped with everything you need, the bedroom is bright and cosy, and the colourful artwork on the wall is sure to make you smile. We think this pad suits couples and small groups keen to spend most of their time exploring.

Outside of your home, the Giardini Indro Montanelli is just a ten-minute walk away, while the Duomo di Milano is just under thirty minutes from your door. The Milano Centrale Railway Station is also just ten minutes away on foot for allowing for easy exploration further afield.

Halfway between Porta Venezia and the Stazione Centrale is Tropicalia. It’s a great little flat, which makes the most of its small footprint with bold, playful design. Colours pop all over the place, and the tall windows ensure that there’s plenty of natural light. The only thing that’s worth flagging at the moment is the number of stairs – Giulio’s trying to get lift access, but at the moment, you’ve got to be ready to handle 130 of them.

On the edge of Brera and Garibaldi, Artemis is wonderfully placed for both the nightlife that fills the area, and for getting to other parts of the city. The flat has a sense of individuality to it – the design is sophisticated, with lots of beautiful objects that elevate it beyond what you might reasonably expect from a place of its size. It’s all fairly valuable, so for that reason the host, Rita, would prefer to rent to adults, or at least not young children.

There’s no need to hire a car for a stay in this apartment in Milan’s old town – most of the must-see sights can be reached on foot and there’s a Metro station a minute’s walk away. Located on the top floor of a historical building, you’re away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below so it’s surprisingly quiet for a city centre pad. The minimalist decor here won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we love the mix of white walls and bold window frames. And the large roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo before heading out for dinner at one of the many local restaurants.

The Art of Milan

This compact home is located in Porta Venezia, known for its lively atmosphere. The kitchen here is well set up for snacks and light bites, and for dinner, Porta Venezia’s vibrant restaurant scene has you covered. While the sofa bed in the living area can sleep a third guest, the only bathroom is accessed via the bedroom, so at full capacity, privacy would be limited. It’s also worth noting that children under 2 aren’t allowed here. We think this home is best suited to a couple or solo traveller wanting a vibrant place to stay with easy access to Milan’s must-sees.

Note that you’ll need to climb stairs here.

The Artworks

The terrace, along with the vast windows, helps counter some smaller issues with Bredbeddle. As a whole, it’s a lovely flat – the white walls and brilliant light give it a sense of space and calm. As you step onto the balcony, it’s as if you’re no longer in the city, so intense is the green that greets you on all sides. You are, however, very much in the middle of the city, and there are lots of good places to eat nearby, which is important given that the kitchen is the biggest letdown in the place. It’s very small, and you wouldn’t want to do more than heating up a pot there.

Overlooking the beautiful church of San Giorgio al Palazzo and less than five-minutes away from the Duomo, lies this light-filled penthouse. Spread out across the top floor of an elegant building, the home is made for a family or a group of friends set on exploring the city.  We particularly loved the living spaces which make for easy socialising. The original marble fireplace and custom-made bookcases create the perfect setting to come together for a few pre-evening drinks. And surprisingly, for somewhere this central we found the apartment very quiet. It really is the perfect retreat within the hustle and bustle of Milan.

Instead, it’s comfortable, very well looked after by Alexey, and in general, it just has a welcoming atmosphere.

With its floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides, the open-plan living area gives you privileged views across Milan’s rooftops and a living backdrop to admire from the comfort of the sofa or while enjoying a meal at the stylish round dining table. 

The two bedrooms, meanwhile, have a similarly modern aesthetic, with an en-suite main bedroom letting you wake up to more tall window views and a second bedroom equipped with a desk space should you need to catch up on work. 

You’ve also got access to a communal rooftop terrace – the ideal spot to take in sunset views of the Duomo di Milano over a celebratory Spritz before going out to sample the local restaurant scene. 

When it comes to sightseeing, you couldn’t ask for a more central location. Housed in a typical Milanese railing building located just outside the main city centre, this boutique apartment offers a comfortable base for those seeking an authentic stay away from the tourist crowds.
 
Inside, chic minimalism is the name of the game with an open-plan living area that gets plenty of light, and its sparkling white walls offset by pops of emerald green and gold accents. Make yourself comfortable on the plump loveseat with a glass of Italian wine, or better yet, perch on the shared front balcony with a sundowner as you take in views of the inner courtyard and the surrounding rooftops.

Located on the first floor of a 1920s block, it's been recently revamped by Palomba Serafini Associati studio. Original features such as high ceilings, stuccoes and radiators have been maintained and paired with contemporary furniture, LED site specific art-chandelier, and limited-edition statement artworks. The overall effect is just stunning. There are other more practical highlights – a 24-hour concierge service accessed by scanning a QR code is probably our favourite. Located right next to Corso Buenos Aires, this vibrant area of the city (central north-east) is a mere steps from the central station and within easy reach of the sights. Overall, this home delivers style and substance for both holidaymakers and business travellers. 


The Ginger House

This light and bright apartment is an ideal base for up to four people on a Milan city break. Sure, at full occupancy, two guests will draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but we think this home’s enviable location more than makes up for it. You’ll find Indro Montanelli Gardens just a short walk from the apartment, perfect for a morning stroll or jog, while many of Milan’s key attractions are within easy reach on foot or a short metro ride away.

Bigger isn't always better, and at this stylish home in a particularly nice part of the Scalo di Porta Romana neighbourhood, you'll be enchanted by its clever use of space and chic minimalism. Set on the ground floor, and with a typically high ceiling creating a mezzanine floor for the bedroom, it's dazzlingly white, and filled with fascinating art and quirky furnishings.

The part-time home of a fine arts teacher, it's designed with simplicity and style in mind. We love the sofa made from a base of pallets, along with the comfy dining spot and the practical kitchen. And although the climb up to the bedroom is not for the faint of heart, it's a serene space, perfect for reading. 

Surrounded by shops, cafes and good restaurants, there's more than enough to enjoy on your doorstep. Fondazione Prada, home to a world-famous contemporary art collection is a ten-minute walk from your door. The building itself is a work of art, converted from a century-old distillery into a modern-day marvel. Even the café Bar Luce is something to behold, designed by renowned film director Wes Anderson. But all that said, if it's the big attractions of the city you're after, you're just a six-minute walk from Brenta metro station, and a seven minute walk from Lodi for an easy ride into the centre of town.
