Empatia goes to show how much you can do, even with a small space. The flat’s very bright, and when you’re inside, it’s clear how much work Marta’s put into the place – she designed it all herself. While there are bright colours all over the place, they’re set against fairly neutral backgrounds, so never feel overwhelming. We particularly like the creativity shown with the balcony – repurposing the space like that takes a fair amount of imagination and it pays off.

Stay in Milan in style at this apartment located between the historic Arco della Pace and vibrant Chinatown. This fashionable neighbourhood has plenty of lively markets, as well as chic boutiques, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. Attractions such as the Parco Sempione and Sforzesco Castle are also within walking distance. The apartment itself has plenty of room to relax. There’s an open-plan living room, and if it isn’t needed, the second bedroom, which has a sofa bed, doubles up as a snug and a study. Last but not least, the private balcony is the perfect spot for a drink any time of day.

Simple yet stylish, this apartment is perfect for a city break. Its large windows look out over Piazza Gramsci, which is just a two-minute walk away. There are excellent public transport links, so exploring the rest of Milan is as easy as can be – and you’ll be within walking distance of attractions including Sempione Park and Castello Sforzesco. The apartment boasts a crisp, clean style and comes with all the necessities, including a well-equipped kitchen. With four guests staying here, two will sleep on a sofa bed in the living space – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d stick to a guest count of two.

This flat is one of those places that makes you feel at home as soon as you arrive. It's full of gusto – think vivid greens, bright reds, glitzy gold mirrors and at the centre of it all, a gorgeous jungle-themed wallpaper that adds the perfect amount of pizazz. 

The living room was our favourite spot to relax and unwind after a long day, but the Japanese-style bathroom, Scandi-style kitchen and the cosy bedroom were just as stylish. Although there's nowhere to sit, we enjoyed the small balcony, too – it catches the evening sun and looks out over the bustling city streets, so you can stand with a glass of wine and watch the world pass by. 

Location-wise, you're nestled at the edge of Chinatown and Sempione, so there's a vast array of bars and restaurants of all types within walking distance. Runners can start their morning off with a jog through Parco Sempione (fourteen minutes on foot) before enjoying a day sightseeing – Castello Sforzesco (a twenty-minute stroll), Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (half an hour on foot) and the Duomo (walkable in thirty-five minutes) are all within easy reach.

Between Chinatown and the Sempione Park lies Total Eclipse, a calming yet stylish loft. The design is reminiscent of the artisanal workshops that proliferated in Milan in the early 20th century, so there’s a real sense of place - it feels Milanese. It has a very open layout, which adds to the atmosphere but could also be off-putting - sound in particular carries throughout the entire house so light sleepers might have some problems.

Conveniently located just outside the historic centre, this apartment provides easy access to the iconic sights of Milan. From here, you can stroll to local restaurants, bars and shops. There’s no need to hire a car for a stay in this apartment in Milan’s old town – most of the must-see sights can be reached on foot and there’s a Metro station a minute’s walk away. Located on the top floor of a historical building, you’re away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below so it’s surprisingly quiet for a city centre pad. The minimalist decor here won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we love the mix of white walls and bold window frames. Art museums, designer shops, fantastic restaurants – Milan's Brera neighbourhood is the place to be if you love the finer things in life. It's where you'll find this no-frills apartment, situated just a short walk from tram stops and a metro station. While two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, we don't think you'll have to compromise on space. There are desks in each bedroom if you plan to work from home, a sleek kitchen if you fancy rustling up dinner, and even a terrace where you can enjoy an alfresco aperitif.

The terrace, along with the vast windows, helps counter some smaller issues with Bredbeddle. As a whole, it’s a lovely flat – the white walls and brilliant light give it a sense of space and calm. As you step onto the balcony, it’s as if you’re no longer in the city, so intense is the green that greets you on all sides. You are, however, very much in the middle of the city, and there are lots of good places to eat nearby, which is important given that the kitchen is the biggest letdown in the place. It’s very small, and you wouldn’t want to do more than heating up a pot there.

It’s been decorated in calming hues that make it an attractive and comfortable home-from-home – it’s exactly the kind of space you want to return to after a busy day of sightseeing in Milan. The kitchen makes cooking at home a breeze, though you’ll also have plenty of bars, restaurants, and cafes nearby. You can stroll to Giardini Indro Montanelli in a few minutes, and for sights that are further afield, you need only hop on the Porta Venezia metro.

You can easily reach the Old Town from here, and the area is abundant in great shops and restaurants. A small place that punches above its weight, Colour Reversal has been well designed, and that makes a lot of difference. The way that the kitchen fits in with the living room works perfectly from an aesthetic standpoint, and while having the kitchen and the sofa bed in the same room isn’t ideal, we wouldn’t really recommend using that bed anyway. It’s always nice to have the option, however, so we won’t complain.

This contemporary studio apartment in the upscale Quadrilatero Della Moda neighbourhood is perfect for a couple or solo traveller. The apartment's location is ideal for exploring the vibrant city of Milan, with easy access to Teatro alla Scala, Duomo di Milano, and the shopping street, Via della Spiga. Although the apartment is compact and there is no kitchen on offer here, it provides a comfortable base to relax between adventures – the balcony is a big check in our books, too. With excellent transport links to the rest of the city via the nearby Montenapoleone metro station, this pad is the perfect home for your Milan city break.

What makes Colour Inversion special is hard to put your finger on, but that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. Everything there is perfectly proportioned, so while it is a very small place (it can technically hold four people, but that would be a stretch), it never feels undersized. It’s also just off Corso Buenos Aires, one of the main shopping streets in the city and a lively spot in general.

This is a delightful little apartment in the shadow of the Sforzesco Castle. The sprawling greenery of Sempione Park is right on your doorstep and the Duomo, Royal Palace and Teatro alla Scala are all within a fifteen-minute walk. We love the apartment’s terrace, which is home to all sorts of pot plants and cacti, and a table and chairs for a cold glass of something (there's a dedicated wine fridge inside). The designer sofas and curated collection of coffee table books in the living room are everything you’d expect in Italy’s capital of style. But it’s the ceiling that draws the eye – a slant of white-washed wood beams adding a delightfully rustic touch, and lending itself to make-shift books shelves in every available nook and cranny. Despite the proximity to both the castle and the Brera district (home to cafés, restaurants and luxury fashion boutiques), this place is in a residential block, so you’re guaranteed a little peace and quiet.

There are so many good things about Sailor’s Solace that it’s hard to know where to start. We adore the living room, a place that feels down-to-earth and yet special at the same time – especially when it fills with sunlight. It’s hard not to flop into the hammock as soon as you see it, and even harder to peel yourself away. At this unique home, it's tempting just to stay in, passing the evening on the terrace with a Campari for company.

But when in Milan, there's much to see. And here, you’re close enough to most of the major attractions to walk (and if you weren’t, there’s a station nearby). Start with the medieval Sforzesco Castle, just a ten-minute walk away. The 15th-century structure sits on an expanse of beautifully-manicured gardens – there's even an aquarium, ideal if you're travelling with children. 

From here, wind your way towards the Duomo, stopping for a coffee and cannoli somewhere along the way. The cathedral is like nothing else you've ever seen, constructed from elegant pink marble.

It’s all fairly valuable, so for that reason the host, Rita, would prefer to rent to adults, or at least not young children.
