This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. Wandering the surrounding streets it seems like every corner is home to an ancient church between family-run trattoria and gelaterias. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

That said, with your host able to arrange at-home massages, private chefs, restaurant reservations and tickets to the city’s top events, your home gives you a slice of heaven without ever needing to step out the front door.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This home has a fantastic location in upscale Prati – it's just over a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, while the high-end boutiques in Via Cola di Rienzo are a twenty-minute stroll away. You'll also find an array of bars and gourmet restaurants on your doorstep. Trionfale Market, on the other hand, with its food and flower stalls, is just over a five-minute saunter. So, take some fresh produce back to this home and whip up a Roman-style feast to enjoy in the elegant dining area. Later, entertain your guests at the piano here, or relax with a glass of prosecco. In the morning, fling open the French doors in the bedroom, then enjoy a hearty breakfast before starting another exciting day exploring all the Eternal City's wonderful sights.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

There’s an air of graceful elegance to this home located in Rome’s Valle Aurelia neighbourhood, directly behind the Vatican. Bright and welcoming, you’ll immediately be drawn to the main open-plan living area where large glass doors lead out onto a private balcony. With two comfortable bedrooms – one of which has a vanity desk should you need to catch up on work – you’ve got everything you need for a relaxing, care-free stay. Outside of your home, Vatican City with its famous Saint Peter's Basilica is a thirty-minute walk away, Monte Ciocci Park is a thirteen-minute stroll and thanks to the metro station that’s a four-minute walk away, you can be in Rome’s historic centre in less than thirty minutes.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Tucked between Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Borghese, you couldn't ask for a better spot to base yourself during your Roman holiday. The cobbled street outside is utterly charming, and even with the crowds milling about a few hundred metres away, it's quite peaceful. The sprawling Villa Borghese is just five minutes away – it's an absolute must-visit, home to lush greenery, city views and beautiful sculptures, plus it's where you'll find the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre and Museo Pietro Canonica. You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. End your evenings on the private terrace – just pour yourself a glass of wine and relax as the sun goes down, basking in the magic of Rome.

You'll be impressed with the views of the Santa Barbara dei Librari seen from the windows of this newly renovated apartment. But you'll love this home's location even more. Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. You're also an easy stroll into the centre if sightseeing is on your to-do list.

We also love that the main bedroom opens out onto the patio and that both bedrooms are en-suite. The second bedroom has a desk, too, if you need to catch up on emails while in Rome. This home is ideal for leisure or business travellers.

A short stroll from Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, this apartment is perfectly located for exploring Rome. It’s ideal for a family that won’t mind the sleeping arrangements, with one guest sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room and one sleeping on an additional sofa bed in the main bedroom. Given its third-floor position, you’ll all need to be able to climb stairs – and you might want to travel light. The exposed wooden beams and traditional decor make this a charming base for seeing the sights of the Eternal City.

The understatement on display in this historic house allows some of the warm, textural elements of the design – like the exposed beam ceiling, tiled floors and concrete steps – to sing. Set within a stunning fifteenth-century building, the home is spread over three floors, accessible via a beautiful spiral staircase that eventually emerges in between the three bedrooms up on the second floor. The interior is a largely pared-back affair, with a definite nod to Scandinavian simplicity, but without veering into the impersonal. While the Tiber isn’t actually visible from the front door, but it’s only one street over, and the Castel Sant’Angelo is just a few minutes' walk on the other bank. Elsewhere, you're around five minutes from the ever-popular Piazza Navona and ten to the lively morning market in Campo de' Fiori.

Set right in the heart of Rome’s historic centre and housed in an ancient palazzo of high and mighty proportions, this place feels more like an Italian residence than a city bolthole – and we couldn’t love it more.

Spread out over three floors and exquisitely designed throughout, the designers have taken the best of the period architecture (would you look at those gabled ceilings in the main bedroom suite complete with a private terrace) while bringing the rest of the home elegantly into the 21st Century.  

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts on the rooftop terrace – the home’s hidden gem. Cradled by the crumbling ochre facades, it couldn’t feel more Italian. And if you’re impressed with the view now, wait until dusk when the cupolas of the city’s churches light up. It’s the perfect spot for aperitifs – and the well-stocked honesty bar will come in handy for those.

Keep on top of fitness with the indoor spin bike, then reward yourself with a hydro-massage bath. And for those combining work and play in the city, a dedicated desk space with views of the sunny shared courtyard downstairs should do nicely. 

When it’s time to set off exploring, take your pick from the must-see sights surrounding the elegant Campo Marzio district. The Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain are all less than a ten-minute walk – or a smidge longer with pitstops for pizza al taglio and gelato along the way.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.


Milliner

Stay in a fantastic location on Via Margutta (the home of Gregory Peck’s journalist in Roman Holiday), just a six-minute walk from the Villa Borghese Gardens and eight minutes from the Spanish Steps. After some morning sightseeing, return home, past the excellent restaurant in the courtyard serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, and fling open the doors to your private terrace. Sit on the patio set with an afternoon bottle of wine, or sprawl out on a lounger with a good novel – you’ll have a pretty view of the surrounding pastel buildings and plenty of sunshine. Inside, the apartment is just as lovely – a bright, tastefully decorated space with designer furniture and carefully selected artworks. At the end of your busy days in the eternal city, fall asleep soundly in private comfortable bedrooms, looking forward to another morning coffee on the patio.

It’s a journey to get to Ocean Eyes, but we promise it’s worth it. Tucked away on the fourth floor of a beautiful Navona building, it comes with an airy terrace, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The immediate street is filled with antique shops – and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Piazza Navona. The place itself is quite small (especially if four guests stay here), but we’re willing to look past that as it’s just so charming.

As well as being ideally located in one of the prettiest and most central squares in Rome, this apartment is also within walking distance from pretty much every major tourist attraction. For example, you'll find yourself less than five minutes' walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, nine minutes from the Trevi Fountain, and twenty-five minutes to the Colosseum. You've also got plenty of eateries nearby to refuel after a long day of exploring – favourites include seafood linguine at La Tavernetta 48 and creative bruschetta and seasonal dishes at Michelin-recommended CiPASSO – both of which are within a two-minute walk. We'd suggest you pick this home based on location alone, but luckily the classically Roman interior has its own charms. It might not be one for the cutting-edge minimalist, but with high ceilings, antique furniture and tiled floors throughout, there's plenty of character on show here. Finally, there's a lovely big kitchen for rustling up family feasts, and the light-filled bedrooms all have large windows and ornate beds in the two king rooms.

While this two-bedroom Rome apartment isn't the most stylish in our collection, its enviable location is what makes it stand out. If you're here to explore, you'll find plenty of galleries and museums nearby. Back at home, one bedroom offers courtyard views, while the other lets you peer through trees at the River Tiber. The kitchen, while looking in need of an update, is well-equipped – though we think you'll be taking advantage of stylish Regola's eateries more often than not.
