The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Descend the famous Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, just over five minutes from your home – from here, you can explore all the sights of the city by metro.


Baroque Waters

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.

It’s easy to work out where the owner found inspiration for this gallery-like apartment – all you need to do is wander around the local neighbourhood of Monti. Bustling cafés, ornate architecture, and ancient grandeur is all around. A nine-minute stroll in either direction will take you to two of the city’s most majestic sights – the Colosseum and the Foro Romano. With antiquity and arts all around you, the theme continues as you return home.

Many of us are content with painting walls in a calming, neutral tone, but the owner of this apartment had bigger plans. In a nod to the frescoes of the city, the walls are painted in trompe-l'œil effect – with clever positioning of the mirrors, the artwork appears in 3D. While the kitchen tiles and dining table have also enjoyed some brushwork, and this art project was just one effort in the restoration of this nineteenth-century home.

We love the terracotta-coloured tilework, adorned by vintage pieces of furniture dotted throughout the living space and bedroom. Pad across tiles and decorative rugs towards the double doors – this scene isn’t an optical illusion. You’ve got a private balconette with colourful flowers and scenes of Roman streets below. Is there any better spot for a chilled glass of prosecco?

Still, the rustic design is packed with character, and the super convenient location more than makes up for its compact layout.

Having said that, you won't have to venture far to discover the treasures of Rome – as you'll be stationed just 500 metres away from Piazza Navona and 600 metres away from the Pantheon.

When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. You’d be hard-pressed to find better.

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

This elegant apartment is in a restored 16th-century palazzo – and it looks the part. You’ll step over the marble tiles of the entrance into a magnificent home filled with art and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Ceiling frescos and glittering chandeliers can be found throughout the home, which also boasts a private terrace overlooking the cupola of Santa Agnese in Piazza Navona. The piazza is just a stone’s throw away, and you’ll be a short walk from the likes of the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Just perfect.

Soul of Rome

This apartment is truly in the heart of Rome. A five-minute walk from Piazza Navona and moments away from Campo de' Fiori, this is the place to be if sightseeing is at the top of your to-do list. You'll find plenty to see and do within walking distance, be it shops and eateries or must-visit landmarks. The apartment is on the second floor and lacks a lift, so you'll have to be comfortable climbing stairs. That said, we think it's a great find. A roomy living area provides ample space to relax, dine together, and even work from home. Just note that the second bedroom is a little snug, making it more suitable for one guest.

Sitting on the top floor of the building, this sumptuously beautiful apartment is just a stone’s throw away from the Spanish Steps and offers a luxurious base from which to explore Rome’s most famous sights. 

Recently renovated and curated with an exquisite eye for design and detail, this home is everything you could dream of having for a romantic Roman holiday. From its parquet floors to its elegant wallpaper and contemporary furnishings, there’s an air of sophisticated grandeur here that feels uniquely special. 

Step out of the bright living area and onto the private terrace where outdoor seating invites you to relax with an espresso each morning and sip on sundowners while taking in views of the Spanish Steps and the surrounding rooftops and churches. When it comes to sightseeing, you couldn’t be better placed with the Spanish Steps a three-minute walk, the Trevi Fountain a ten-minute stroll and Piazza Navona just under fifteen minutes away on foot. You’re also a ten-minute walk from Villa Borghese and its manicured gardens, while the Mausoleum of Augustus is six minutes on foot from your door.

Waking up to views of Rome’s monumental Colosseum through your window is a moment you’ll never tire of at this immaculate apartment, perched right in the heart of the Old Town.

Housed in a handsome palazzo befitting of any gladiator, from the outside, this place is straight out of ancient Roman times. But inside, this apartment is as cool and contemporary as it gets – with slick monochrome finishes and luxurious detailing that Italians do so well.

Its neighbours are luxury shops and buzzing pavement cafés, and you’re just a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps here. Or, follow the Via del Corse five minutes in the other direction to reach the lively square of Pizza del Popolo, lined with cafés and home to a weekly book market.

The apartment is a medley of old and new, with a flatscreen TV sitting above a classic fireplace and gallery-white walls. The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

With the Vatican just a ten-minute stroll away, homes in Rome don’t get much more central than this. Located in the upscale Prati district – known for its shopping – you’ll find traditional trattorias, modern pizzerias, and an array of bars nearby. And for exploring the rest of the city, Lepanto Metro station is a short walk away. The home itself is located in a 1930s building, complete with an original Art Deco entrance hall, overlooking an inner courtyard. We love the mix of period features and contemporary decor here. We think this city pad is a great choice for anyone wanting a quieter base with easy access to Rome’s must-see sights.

This third-floor apartment is perfectly placed for getting to know Rome, boasting a private balcony overlooking the street. There is the potential for some noise and parking outside may be tricky, but you'll have public transport nearby and attractions like the Basilica of Santa Maria are an easy walk away. The kitchen is fully equipped but quite small, and storage throughout is limited so we think it's best for short breaks or work trips. At full capacity, two guests will sleep on the comfy sofa bed, and your host can provide a free cot and high chair to make travelling with little ones a breeze.

Just a few steps from the Trevi Fountain, it's a short stroll from restaurants, shops, and must-see landmarks – that's about as central as it gets. Inside, the design merges contemporary comfort with classic charm. The living area has ornate ceilings and large windows offering a glimpse of the famous fountain, while each bedroom has its own bathroom for added convenience. There isn't a coffee machine, but there are plenty of cafes within walking distance where you can kickstart your day with an espresso.

Situated a two-minute walk from Campo de' Fiori, one of Rome’s main piazzas, this apartment is ideal for first-time and frequent travellers alike. The city’s best bits are within walking distance – the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum are around thirty minutes away. While some elements of this home are a little dated, everything functions well, and the place is clean and comfortable. Just a heads up, the street below can get noisy at times, so we recommend packing earplugs if you’re easily awoken.

It’s rare for a city home to deliver on quite so many fronts as this charming apartment in Rome’s historic Parione neighbourhood. The location, on an enchanting street between Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps, feels brilliantly Roman, while in the home, vintage stylings meet modern comforts in elegant fashion. Muted blocks of colour give the living room an artsy edge, with wood floors, tall ceilings and atlas-inspired art adding to its sophisticated feel. We love the kitchen’s black and white tiles that contrast beautifully with its red walls and stone floors, while the blush coloured bedroom is pretty as a picture. It’s a treat to wake up here, especially when you open up the French doors that lead out onto a scenic private balcony. In Rome, there’s a tendency for hosts to put less effort into their interiors the more central their home is. The logic says that people will come anyway. And for the most part, they're right. However, this is absolutely not the case with this stunning apartment. It might be on one of the most beautiful streets in the city, but you can tell how much care your host, Giacomo, has put into the design – both from an aesthetic perspective and a practical one. These are small things, like choosing materials that are easy to maintain but keep a bit of character. The brick fireplace is probably the best example of this, but we're also big fans of the elegant simplicity of the minimalist, black kitchen. Step out onto the quaint cobbled street outside your home, and you'll find yourself within walking distance of many of Rome's headline sights. Head west over the River Tiber, and within fifteen minutes, you'll be gazing upon Vatican City, the awe-inspiring capital of Christianity. Closer to home, you're a mere five-minute walk from Piazza Navona. The picturesque square buzzes with activity at all hours of the day and night.
