The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Inside, space is a little tight – as is often the case in this part of town – but large windows in the living area bring in plenty of light. Tastefully renovated and furnished, but without losing any of the charm of the structure, the interior is a picture of old and new. It's not often we mention our admiration for scruff marks, but the knocks on the wooden fittings nod to the history of the flat, and by extension, the city, so we really love them. Plenty of modern comforts have been added to offer everything you need for an effortless stay, from rainfall showers to cafetieres, it's all there. And when you're in search of a calming spot to delve into a good book, the third and fourth bedrooms benefitting from soft floral sofas, ornamental lanterns and plenty of natural light pouring in, simply call out for your attention.

Since 1869, the Campo de' Fiori has been a hub of market trading for fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And by evening, this charming square becomes a hub of alfresco dining spots and wine bars. With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

The street below is well-trodden, so there’s some noise if you leave the windows open, but the reason it’s so busy is the location, next to the Pantheon.

You’ll step over the marble tiles of the entrance into a magnificent home filled with art and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Ceiling frescos and glittering chandeliers can be found throughout the home, which also boasts a private terrace overlooking the cupola of Santa Agnese in Piazza Navona. The piazza is just a stone’s throw away, and you’ll be a short walk from the likes of the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Just perfect.

You can also visit the Vatican, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica, which are also within walking distance. Location is everything for city breaks, and this apartment boasts an unbeatable location in Rome. The Spanish Steps are only three minutes away on foot, and you need only walk seven minutes to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain. The apartment is on the fourth floor of the building, so you’ll be able to admire a view of the city’s rooftops from the terrace. This loft apartment is warm and welcoming, with a chic, open layout. The bedroom is at mezzanine level above the living and dining space, so you’ll need to be able to manage the stairs to stay here.

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

Within walking distance of Villa Borghese and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment is ideal for sightseeing. You'll have central Rome at your fingertips here, whether you're looking for restaurants, landmarks, or high-end shops. Despite its small size, the layout is functional for friends and families. The kitchen is compact but has everything you'll need to whip up light fare – although we think it's a great excuse to try the local eateries – and the bedrooms are bright if a little snug. We think it makes a convenient, fuss-free base for those keen to spend most of their time exploring the city.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.

Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.
