Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Set in the heart of the historic district, overlooking the atmospheric square Largo dei library, all the must-see sights are walkable from here.

Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

It’s just over a five-minute stroll to a wide variety of eateries, while history lovers can visit Piazza di Santa Maria with its 12th-century basilica. If you want to check out some of Rome’s main attractions, the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum are around a half an hour walk or fifteen-minute ride away. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.

While this two-bedroom Rome apartment isn't the most stylish in our collection, its enviable location is what makes it stand out. If you're here to explore, you'll find plenty of galleries and museums nearby. Back at home, one bedroom offers courtyard views, while the other lets you peer through trees at the River Tiber. The kitchen, while looking in need of an update, is well-equipped – though we think you'll be taking advantage of stylish Regola's eateries more often than not.

As well as being ideally located in one of the prettiest and most central squares in Rome, this apartment is also within walking distance from pretty much every major tourist attraction. For example, you'll find yourself less than five minutes' walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, nine minutes from the Trevi Fountain, and twenty-five minutes to the Colosseum. You've also got plenty of eateries nearby to refuel after a long day of exploring – favourites include seafood linguine at La Tavernetta 48 and creative bruschetta and seasonal dishes at Michelin-recommended CiPASSO – both of which are within a two-minute walk. We'd suggest you pick this home based on location alone, but luckily the classically Roman interior has its own charms. It might not be one for the cutting-edge minimalist, but with high ceilings, antique furniture and tiled floors throughout, there's plenty of character on show here. Finally, there's a lovely big kitchen for rustling up family feasts, and the light-filled bedrooms all have large windows and ornate beds in the two king rooms.

It’s a journey to get to Ocean Eyes, but we promise it’s worth it. Tucked away on the fourth floor of a beautiful Navona building, it comes with an airy terrace, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The immediate street is filled with antique shops – and you’re only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Piazza Navona. The place itself is quite small (especially if four guests stay here), but we’re willing to look past that as it’s just so charming.

This apartment sits within a former palace on one of central Rome’s ancient streets. A short walk away (350 metres), you’ll find Castel Sant’Angelo and it’s just 750 metres from the endless museums of The Vatican. It’s split across two levels and, upon entering, you’ll be greeted with a lavish living room with picture-perfect views. The second bedroom features a sofa bed, but its access to a private terrace with views of Castel Sant’Angelo is a definite highlight – perfect for enjoying sunset meals and celebratory glasses if Italian wine.

Just a few steps away from the hive of activity that is the Campo de’ Fiori square and its market lies Starry Eyes, a spread-out apartment with ample space for large groups of friends and friends. Brightly lit, the tall windows overlooking Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza San Pantaleo let in plenty of light throughout the day and fill the space with fresh air. Step out onto the corner balcony as you sip your morning coffee and watch the world go by. We particularly love the antique dining table – be sure to share an Italian feast of dreams when it comes to mealtimes. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

Everything about Kalos Charm feels luxurious, from the velvet upholstery to the elegant bathrooms. It’s also in a fantastic position, between Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna – two of the most famous squares in the city. And while it’s a decent size, and can hold four people, Maurizio and Fabio have a few other places in the same building, so a larger group could look into renting out more than one at a time.

If you're planning a trip to Rome but are not so keen on the traditional homes that make up a lot of the options, we would point you in the direction of this contemporary apartment.

Against an effortlessly cool backdrop of stark white walls and tiled flooring, much of the interior design embraces industrial-chic trends, from the bare lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling and the chalkboard on the kitchen wall to the bright yellow stools at the kitchen surface. We're also big fans of the Basquiat artworks and the sleek bathroom.

In keeping with this stylish interior, the home sits on the trendier side of the Tiber in the neighbourhood of Trastevere, full of fashionable trattorias and photogenic alleyways. If you fancy giving in to your inner tourist at any point, many of the big-hitters aren't far away. Both Piazza Navona and the Pantheon can be seen in twenty minutes' walk, while Castel Sant'Angelo takes just over a quarter of an hour on foot.

The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

Habitat has a lot going for it. Beyond the incredible location (Via di Monserrato is considered one of the most beautiful streets in the city), it’s in good condition, has high ceilings, excellent parquet floors, and whitewashed ceiling beams. The kitchen brings the average down a little – you wouldn’t want to plan on cooking a dinner party in there – but apart from that, it’s a very comfortable, practical flat.
