When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. You’d be hard-pressed to find better.

It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Set in a gorgeous 20th-century building only a five-minute walk from the Piazza di Spagna, this home delivers on location in spades. Spend an afternoon wandering Rome's cobbled streets before enjoying an aperitif at one of the trendy bars in this neighbourhood. Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

Nauticalia is set just a couple of hundred metres from Piazza di Spagna, giving it the perfect location for people who are in Rome to do a bit of that famous sightseeing. That’s not the only thing going for it, as the apartment boasts some lovely design elements, such as the frescoed ceiling or the marine theme in the bathroom, and the huge beds will keep you comfortable. The kitchen, despite having some wonderful exposed brickwork, is pretty small and basic, but there are so many places to eat in the area that you won’t even notice.

When we imagine a stay in Rome, we think of the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This home's location is ideal – it's just a short walk from both, while the Colosseum is also within walking distance (with comfy shoes). Of course, with such a central location, you're probably going to hear some street noise back at this apartment. We love the beautiful frescoes on the ceilings and the retro photos of celebrities adorning the walls. At full capacity, one guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so this place might be best for a couple if you don't want to compromise on socialising space.

A short walk from the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Barberini, this apartment puts some of Rome's most famous landmarks at your fingertips. There's no doubt that the location is excellent, especially if sightseeing is on the agenda. Yet it's the terrace back home that steals the show. It boasts panoramic views of Rome's historic skyline – nothing beats a glimpse of St. Peter's Basilica or the Vittorio Emanuele II monument while enjoying your morning espresso. Inside, the design marries traditional charm with contemporary touches. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, but we think that's a fair trade given the central neighbourhood.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is.

In most cities, paintings dating back to the seventeenth century are typically looked at from a safe distance in museums and galleries, but in a place like Rome, it's not unusual to live among historic artefacts. Take this studio apartment in the middle of Colonna, the famous shopping district. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and the remains of a fresco from that time have been preserved by the architect on one of the walls. Aside from that, the interior design is heavily influenced by mid-century trends, from the Art Deco crockery in the kitchen and the boldly patterned chairs to the Art Nouveau-inspired mirrors in the bathroom. If your four-century-old home has got you in the mood to see more of the city's illustrious heritage, you're in luck as the central location is excellent. You can walk to Trevi Fountain in seven minutes, while the Pantheon can be seen in just under ten.

You're in the heart of Rome here, an easy walk or quick metro ride away from all the sights. Back home, you'll find everything you need to relax in style. The bright living space boasts a sofa bed for two guests. Keen to unwind? One bathroom has a chromotherapy shower, while the other features a Jacuzzi bath perfect for post-sightseeing soaks. There's also a tiny balcony ideal for alfresco aperitifs – if that doesn't tick the boxes, we don't know what will.

Cosy and compact, this apartment is an ideal base in Rome. Its location couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and within walking distance of most of the city’s sights. There are countless restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, which is handy as the kitchenette is more suitable for preparing light bites – you can get your pasta fill nearby instead. The apartment is spread over two floors, with a quiet seating area on the second floor. If you’re hoping for more space and privacy, we’d recommend sticking to a guest count of two, so the sofa bed in the living room isn’t in use.

Combining antique pieces with modern details, this unique apartment on the top floor of a 16th-century aristocratic palace has plenty of character and Roman soul. Stepping into the living room, you'll find chic decor and vibrant pops of colours, with the red leather armchairs, an animal print chesterfield sofa and abstract artwork. While the statement design pieces really pack a punch, it's the antique objects, low beamed ceiling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that caught our attention. Choose a book from the extensive collection for a spot of bedtime reading. Ascend the floating staircase up to the cosy bedrooms, benefitting from sloped wooden ceilings and slatted screens that make for a private and homely space to unwind. Exposed brickwork in the kitchen contrasts nicely with the otherwise clean and modern design, making a great area to enjoy group meals. Elsewhere, those keeping one eye on work during their stay will notice the home office space in the corner of the living room. Emails seen to, it's out for a day spent taking in Rome's most beloved sights – pennies at the ready, Trevi Fountain is just a short four-minute stroll away. The home's position just off Via del Corso means it's easy to get to many of the attractions in the city on foot. Last, but certainly not least, round off a lovely day spent sightseeing with a tipple of limoncello from your private balcony, offering a spectacular view of the church of Sant’Ignazio – it's truly special.

We know that wandering around Rome can become exhausting rather quickly, and quite frankly we think you'll want a place to take in a bit of Aria Fresca. But don't fret because we've got just the answer in this beautiful and bright apartment just moments away from the Spanish Steps and Piazza Lucina. With double-glazed windows and plenty of space, small families or friends will truly be able to relax after their Roman adventures. You shouldn't expect all the glitz and glamour here, but you can get your dose of that while meandering down the streets.

Back inside, from the moment you enter you'll notice the black and white photographic wallpaper prints adorning the walls, that we really loved – there's a charming retro feel around the apartment. Plus, a pair of fancy bathrooms – complete with chromo-therapeutic rainfall showers to soak your aching tootsies after a day spent wandering this ancient part of the world. Enjoy mapping out your afternoon's tourist itinerary around the stylish dark wood dining table with a tipple of limoncello in hand. With so much to see and do around here, this pad offers just about everything needed for a sweet stay in the Italian capital.

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. Take your pick from the collection and perch in the study – with its twisted gold column, hardwood furnishings, and vintage typewriter, you’ll feel every bit the European intellectual. A stroll in the immediate neighbourhood will take you to jewellery boutiques and hidden wine bars for a glass of barolo. Descend the famous Spanish Steps to the Piazza di Spagna, just over five minutes from your home – from here, you can explore all the sights of the city by metro.


Baroque Waters

We're absolutely smitten with this apartment. The design marries Italian tradition with contemporary flair – think moody tones, pastel accents, and sleek finishes. It's set up like a loft, with the second bedroom perched above the living space on the mezzanine. Granted, the whole space is on the petite side (especially the kitchen), but with daily cleaning and concierge service included, that's fine with us. If that doesn't sway you, the location in the heart of the city will. Moments away are vibrant piazzas, ancient attractions like the Trevi Fountain, and fantastic eateries, putting you in the perfect position for a Roman adventure.

Gialla Gem

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.


Paparazzi

In a quiet backstreet just off the legendary Via Vittorio Veneto, this apartment would make an excellent retreat for a couple visiting Rome. It’s an eight-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and less than ten minutes on foot to the Trevi Fountain. The elegant decor of this studio apartment will certainly have you tossing three coins in the fountain, hoping to return. Exposed beams and stonework create a sense of the building’s history. The stylish kitchen area with its sleek breakfast bar illuminated by Edison bulbs is particularly spacious for a studio in central Rome. Although there’s no door between the bedroom area and living area, an archway and the generally large floorspace makes it feel like a one-bed rather than a studio.   



Visions of Amore

A unique apartment with plenty of soul, Pantera Nera is stocked with all sorts of interesting objects and art, from the velvet armchairs to the mirrors in the bathroom to the original paintings in every room. The high ceilings and many windows bring in tons of natural light, while the iron and wood throughout add an industrial vibe. While the lack of lift will force you to take the stairs, Pantera Nera is so close to all the sights that this is virtually all the walking you’ll have to do.

It doesn’t get more central than this fuss-free apartment. You’ll be moments from the Spanish Steps, so close you can actually glimpse the monument's tower from the small Romeo and Juliet balcony. While it's not the most modern home, we think it works well for couples. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, while the others will kip on the mezzanine underneath the rustic beams. The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

Sweet Juliette

Modern and minimalist, this Art Deco-inspired apartment is a well-designed pocket of calm in the heart of Rome. Just a seven-minute walk to Trevi Fountain and the famous Spanish Steps – you really couldn't be better placed in the Eternal City. A wander around the immediate neighbourhood will take you to designer shops and hidden wine bars for a glass of Barolo. In a quiet courtyard that's away from the bustling tourists, there's a local and authentic feel to the home while still being close to the city's most beloved attractions. Back inside, you'll find a fresh and functional space benefitting from plush leather sofas and a stylish white dining area with tasteful artwork adorning the walls. But the real draw of this home is the shaded terrace – complete with an elegant dining area. We can think of no better way to start the day than with a basket of pastries and your morning coffee out here.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.

A three-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, this apartment is the ideal place to stay whether you’re a first-time visitor to Rome or a return traveller. If you’re keen to venture outside your neighbourhood, the Barberini metro station is just up the road. Inside, the home has a fully equipped kitchen, a desk for remote workers and a Jacuzzi bathtub for soaking away the day. Plus, your host can provide private chef services and breakfast deliveries so you can spend more time with your feet up.

It almost seems redundant to try to talk about this magical spot in the heart of Rome – we’ll never be able to do it justice like the photos can. In stunning condition, the apartment hasn't aged at all and invites guests into a time capsule filled with spectacular artworks, antique furniture and original features that are usually only reserved these days for royal palaces and museums alike. Secret doorways and passageways give way to a one-of-a-kind experience and continuous surprises no matter how long you stay. You needn't bother visiting the crowded galleries and museums that the city is so often renowned for, as you'll have your very own gallery at home.
