The apartment is on the fourth floor of the building, so you’ll be able to admire a view of the city’s rooftops from the terrace. This loft apartment is warm and welcoming, with a chic, open layout. The bedroom is at mezzanine level above the living and dining space, so you’ll need to be able to manage the stairs to stay here.

When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. You’d be hard-pressed to find better.

This attractively decorated apartment is the perfect place for a Roman holiday. Located in the heart of historic Rome, it’s just a five-minute walk from Piazza di Spagna and the luxury designer brands of Via de’ Condotti, and a short stroll from the Trevi Fountain. The apartment is stylish and comfortable, with a sofa bed in the living space for two guests – for longer stays or for those hoping for a bit more room, we’d stick to a maximum guest count of two.

It’s not a simple balancing act, and for the most part, Silk Road pulls it off. And, as should go without saying, having the Pantheon about 100m away is not to be sniffed at (as long as you can handle the tourists that accompany it).

That’s not the only thing going for it, as the apartment boasts some lovely design elements, such as the frescoed ceiling or the marine theme in the bathroom, and the huge beds will keep you comfortable. The kitchen, despite having some wonderful exposed brickwork, is pretty small and basic, but there are so many places to eat in the area that you won’t even notice.

In most cities, paintings dating back to the seventeenth century are typically looked at from a safe distance in museums and galleries, but in a place like Rome, it's not unusual to live among historic artefacts. Take this studio apartment in the middle of Colonna, the famous shopping district. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and the remains of a fresco from that time have been preserved by the architect on one of the walls. Aside from that, the interior design is heavily influenced by mid-century trends, from the Art Deco crockery in the kitchen and the boldly patterned chairs to the Art Nouveau-inspired mirrors in the bathroom. If your four-century-old home has got you in the mood to see more of the city's illustrious heritage, you're in luck as the central location is excellent. You can walk to Trevi Fountain in seven minutes, while the Pantheon can be seen in just under ten.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Meanwhile, the bedrooms are comfortable and cosy – just the ticket following a long afternoon on your feet. We think it's an ideal laid-back getaway in Italy's buzzing capital.

Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

When we imagine a stay in Rome, we think of the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This home's location is ideal – it's just a short walk from both, while the Colosseum is also within walking distance (with comfy shoes). Of course, with such a central location, you're probably going to hear some street noise back at this apartment. We love the beautiful frescoes on the ceilings and the retro photos of celebrities adorning the walls. At full capacity, one guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so this place might be best for a couple if you don't want to compromise on socialising space.

There's no doubt that the location is excellent, especially if sightseeing is on the agenda. Yet it's the terrace back home that steals the show. Inside, the design marries traditional charm with contemporary touches. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, but we think that's a fair trade given the central neighbourhood.

While this is a tourist-trodden landmark, you'll certainly have pride of place when you stay in this traditional apartment.

Admirers of wonderfully kitsch decor will love this home, where ditsy patterned wallpaper and antique furniture take centre stage. You'll also find all the practical necessities in the well-outfitted kitchen and comfortable bedroom. After a long day of walking over the seven hills of Rome, this is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a good night's sleep.

The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Combining antique pieces with modern details, this unique apartment on the top floor of a 16th-century aristocratic palace has plenty of character and Roman soul. Stepping into the living room, you'll find chic decor and vibrant pops of colours, with the red leather armchairs, an animal print chesterfield sofa and abstract artwork. While the statement design pieces really pack a punch, it's the antique objects, low beamed ceiling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that caught our attention. Choose a book from the extensive collection for a spot of bedtime reading. Ascend the floating staircase up to the cosy bedrooms, benefitting from sloped wooden ceilings and slatted screens that make for a private and homely space to unwind. Exposed brickwork in the kitchen contrasts nicely with the otherwise clean and modern design, making a great area to enjoy group meals. Elsewhere, those keeping one eye on work during their stay will notice the home office space in the corner of the living room. Emails seen to, it's out for a day spent taking in Rome's most beloved sights – pennies at the ready, Trevi Fountain is just a short four-minute stroll away. The home's position just off Via del Corso means it's easy to get to many of the attractions in the city on foot. Last, but certainly not least, round off a lovely day spent sightseeing with a tipple of limoncello from your private balcony, offering a spectacular view of the church of Sant’Ignazio – it's truly special.

In stunning condition, the apartment hasn't aged at all and invites guests into a time capsule filled with spectacular artworks, antique furniture and original features that are usually only reserved these days for royal palaces and museums alike. Secret doorways and passageways give way to a one-of-a-kind experience and continuous surprises no matter how long you stay. You needn't bother visiting the crowded galleries and museums that the city is so often renowned for, as you'll have your very own gallery at home. Almost every wall is adorned with oil paintings or sumptuous wallpaper, inviting guests to experience the kind of opulence that few ever get to know. And with the vast array of world cuisine and Italian gastronomy at your fingertips, be sure to discover some of Rome's top restaurants in the surrounding area. Having said that – hiring a private chef to come and cook for you is equally as desirable here, as, with such a magnificent dining room setting, it makes sense to embrace every aspect of this outstanding Roman home.

Cosy and compact, this apartment is an ideal base in Rome. Its location couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and within walking distance of most of the city’s sights. There are countless restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, which is handy as the kitchenette is more suitable for preparing light bites – you can get your pasta fill nearby instead. The apartment is spread over two floors, with a quiet seating area on the second floor. If you’re hoping for more space and privacy, we’d recommend sticking to a guest count of two, so the sofa bed in the living room isn’t in use.

Monochromotherapy's position between the Piazza di Spagna and the banks of the River Tiber makes this home perfectly placed within the heart of the world's oldest city. Just a twelve-minute walk will have you at Rome's most beloved water feature, Trevi Fountain – from here, descend the Spanish Steps back to the famous square, only a five-minute stroll from your cosy home. Back inside, from the moment you enter you'll notice the black and white photographic wallpaper prints adorning the walls, that we really loved – there's a charming retro feel around the apartment. Plus, a pair of fancy bathrooms – complete with chromo-therapeutic rainfall showers to soak your aching tootsies after a day spent wandering this ancient part of the world. Enjoy mapping out your afternoon's tourist itinerary around the stylish dark wood dining table with a tipple of limoncello in hand. With so much to see and do around here, this pad offers just about everything needed for a sweet stay in the Italian capital.

In a quiet backstreet just off the legendary Via Vittorio Veneto, this apartment would make an excellent retreat for a couple visiting Rome. It’s an eight-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and less than ten minutes on foot to the Trevi Fountain. The elegant decor of this studio apartment will certainly have you tossing three coins in the fountain, hoping to return. Exposed beams and stonework create a sense of the building’s history. The stylish kitchen area with its sleek breakfast bar illuminated by Edison bulbs is particularly spacious for a studio in central Rome. Although there’s no door between the bedroom area and living area, an archway and the generally large floorspace makes it feel like a one-bed rather than a studio.

Even the apartment building, Palazzo Antamoro, has historic ties – it dates back to the mid-1600s and features the Bernini Fountain in its picturesque courtyard. Inside, the two living areas are contemporary and comfortable, and one has a sofa bed for flexible sleeping arrangements. But if you're anything like us, you'll make a beeline for the terrace – it's the perfect spot to enjoy an Aperol Spritz as the sun goes down.

If you don't fancy eating out, there's a stylish kitchen to create a Roman feast or let the private chef cater for your dinner party. This home is perfect for a discerning group of friends, family, or business professionals looking for a place in the heart of the Eternal City.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.


Soft Shading

A picture of elegance, this apartment is a superb base in Rome. It’s centrally located, housed in a 19th-century building on Via del Corso, a short walk from iconic sights like the Trevi Fountain and Castel Sant’Angelo. The apartment is refined and luxurious, with touches of marble, terracotta, and oak throughout. One of the two living rooms overlooks the terrace, a splendid spot for an evening cocktail. The well-equipped kitchen has everything you might need to cook for yourselves, though there are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby if you’re not a keen chef.

Being on the top floor of an apartment building often, although not always, brings two perks — good views and plenty of daylight. This home in the Campo Marzio neighbourhood of Rome delivers on both fronts, with large windows gazing out over the city's rooftops. We have a lot of good things to say about the interior, from the sumptuous four-poster bed to the sleek black kitchen. There's even a terrace on which to start the day with coffee and breakfast. Location-wise, a first-time visitor to Rome couldn't wish for better. Many of the big-hitters are within walking distance, while there's also a fresh food market around the corner from the building should you want to stock up on authentic ingredients for an Italian feast.
