When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. Then there’s a somewhat contemporary Scandi look, with minimalist bedspreads, stepped bed frames, and modern, white shelved walls. These shelves are packed with literature and art books. When we saw this grand home in the heart of Rome, we were in total awe. The classic Italianate interiors are utter joy, with exquisite antique furniture and oil paintings from the host's family homes in Puglia and Sardinia. Large windows with original shutters look out over pretty Via Bocca di Leone off Via Borgognona, with its luxury boutiques. Entertain in style at the large dining table under the light of the crystal chandelier. Or get some rest in the bedroom painted in a rich Pompeian red – if you’re not feeling sleepy, there’s a library here with a variety of books on art and literature to leaf through. Another bedroom has French doors onto a small balcony, filled with plants, with a view onto the internal courtyard – ideal for breakfast in bed before exploring this charismatic city. This location is fantastic –  it’s just a three-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and a ten-minute saunter to the stunning Trevi Fountain, while a range of sublime restaurants are right on your doorstep. Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. When we imagine a stay in Rome, we think of the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This home's location is ideal – it's just a short walk from both, while the Colosseum is also within walking distance (with comfy shoes). Of course, with such a central location, you're probably going to hear some street noise back at this apartment. We love the beautiful frescoes on the ceilings and the retro photos of celebrities adorning the walls. At full capacity, one guest will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, so this place might be best for a couple if you don't want to compromise on socialising space.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Meanwhile, the bedrooms are comfortable and cosy – just the ticket following a long afternoon on your feet. We think it's an ideal laid-back getaway in Italy's buzzing capital.

An Evening in Roma

Situated a short stroll from both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment has a fantastic location for exploring Rome. The Pantheon, the Roman Forum and much more are also within walking distance. There are a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood to enjoy too. From this home’s open-plan living space, there are wonderful views of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. You can take in the vistas from the dining table. The kitchen area is quite compact, we would say – there’s no oven, but there’s a hob and a microwave. But, with an address as great as this, will you be spending much time at the apartment?

In most cities, paintings dating back to the seventeenth century are typically looked at from a safe distance in museums and galleries, but in a place like Rome, it's not unusual to live among historic artefacts. Take this studio apartment in the middle of Colonna, the famous shopping district. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and the remains of a fresco from that time have been preserved by the architect on one of the walls. Aside from that, the interior design is heavily influenced by mid-century trends, from the Art Deco crockery in the kitchen and the boldly patterned chairs to the Art Nouveau-inspired mirrors in the bathroom. If your four-century-old home has got you in the mood to see more of the city's illustrious heritage, you're in luck as the central location is excellent. You can walk to Trevi Fountain in seven minutes, while the Pantheon can be seen in just under ten.


Freschissimo

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.


Paparazzi

Cosy and compact, this apartment is an ideal base in Rome. Its location couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and within walking distance of most of the city’s sights. There are countless restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, which is handy as the kitchenette is more suitable for preparing light bites – you can get your pasta fill nearby instead. The apartment is spread over two floors, with a quiet seating area on the second floor. If you’re hoping for more space and privacy, we’d recommend sticking to a guest count of two, so the sofa bed in the living room isn’t in use.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is. 

Grandezza Romana

Combining antique pieces with modern details, this unique apartment on the top floor of a 16th-century aristocratic palace has plenty of character and Roman soul. Stepping into the living room, you'll find chic decor and vibrant pops of colours, with the red leather armchairs, an animal print chesterfield sofa and abstract artwork. While the statement design pieces really pack a punch, it's the antique objects, low beamed ceiling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that caught our attention. Choose a book from the extensive collection for a spot of bedtime reading. Ascend the floating staircase up to the cosy bedrooms, benefitting from sloped wooden ceilings and slatted screens that make for a private and homely space to unwind. Exposed brickwork in the kitchen contrasts nicely with the otherwise clean and modern design, making a great area to enjoy group meals. Elsewhere, those keeping one eye on work during their stay will notice the home office space in the corner of the living room. Emails seen to, it's out for a day spent taking in Rome's most beloved sights – pennies at the ready, Trevi Fountain is just a short four-minute stroll away. The home's position just off Via del Corso means it's easy to get to many of the attractions in the city on foot. Last, but certainly not least, round off a lovely day spent sightseeing with a tipple of limoncello from your private balcony, offering a spectacular view of the church of Sant’Ignazio – it's truly special.

We're absolutely smitten with this apartment. The design marries Italian tradition with contemporary flair – think moody tones, pastel accents, and sleek finishes. It's set up like a loft, with the second bedroom perched above the living space on the mezzanine. Granted, the whole space is on the petite side (especially the kitchen), but with daily cleaning and concierge service included, that's fine with us. If that doesn't sway you, the location in the heart of the city will. Moments away are vibrant piazzas, ancient attractions like the Trevi Fountain, and fantastic eateries, putting you in the perfect position for a Roman adventure.

Nauticalia is set just a couple of hundred metres from Piazza di Spagna, giving it the perfect location for people who are in Rome to do a bit of that famous sightseeing. That’s not the only thing going for it, as the apartment boasts some lovely design elements, such as the frescoed ceiling or the marine theme in the bathroom, and the huge beds will keep you comfortable. The kitchen, despite having some wonderful exposed brickwork, is pretty small and basic, but there are so many places to eat in the area that you won’t even notice.

A Note From Rome

In a quiet backstreet just off the legendary Via Vittorio Veneto, this apartment would make an excellent retreat for a couple visiting Rome. It’s an eight-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and less than ten minutes on foot to the Trevi Fountain. The elegant decor of this studio apartment will certainly have you tossing three coins in the fountain, hoping to return. Exposed beams and stonework create a sense of the building’s history. The stylish kitchen area with its sleek breakfast bar illuminated by Edison bulbs is particularly spacious for a studio in central Rome. Although there’s no door between the bedroom area and living area, an archway and the generally large floorspace makes it feel like a one-bed rather than a studio.

A unique apartment with plenty of soul, Pantera Nera is stocked with all sorts of interesting objects and art, from the velvet armchairs to the mirrors in the bathroom to the original paintings in every room. The high ceilings and many windows bring in tons of natural light, while the iron and wood throughout add an industrial vibe. While the lack of lift will force you to take the stairs, Pantera Nera is so close to all the sights that this is virtually all the walking you’ll have to do.

Before we even arrived at Soft Shading, we were struck by the location. It’s so close to the Trevi fountain that the only danger is you’ll end up stuck among all the tourists. It’s very new inside, and the modern fittings contrast nicely with some of the original structural features, like the ceilings. The only drawback is the slightly inadequate living room, upstairs, and without space for a full house, but as it’s right in the middle of the city, you won’t be spending much time in.

Just a seven-minute walk to Trevi Fountain and the famous Spanish Steps – you really couldn't be better placed in the Eternal City.
