Step off the main thoroughfare and you'll discover low-key neighbourhood haunts and cool kerbside cafes where you can while away an afternoon over a long lunch.

The Flaminio quartiere sits in a bend of the River Tiber and lays claim to this classic Roman apartment. The interiors are 1930s inspired with vintage furnishings, rich dark wood accents and original terrazzo floors. After an industrious day exploring the Eternal City, we loved disappearing into what can only be described as a king-sized sofa, designed by Philippe Starck. Sip a cappuccino by the window overlooking the Monte Mario Observatory or take a seat at the dining table and enjoy a traditional cornetto. While you’re a fifteen-minute car ride to the centre of Rome, there’s plenty to do in your locale. In the summer, catch an outdoor movie at the Cinema Titian Roma, ten-minutes walk to the north, with the striking MAXXI contemporary art and architecture museum right next door. The manicured lawns of Villa Borghese are located twenty minutes south – perfect for picnics and afternoon strolls. Closer to home, you’ll find traditional wine bars and simple osterias along the tree-lined Viale del Vignola, just footsteps away.

Much like its sister apartment in the same building, Green Jay has an air of nobility that surrounds it. Antique furniture, dark wooden windows, and tiled floors all combine to encapsulate the feeling of elegance, a feeling which is common in Flaminio. This isn’t the place to stay if you want to be in the very middle of the action, but you get a sense of calm and a detachment from the tourist crowds, which is more than worth the extra journey time.

From floors to ceilings, this apartment in central Rome maintains a sense of originality in its decor and finishes. It blends in with its historic surrounding – the bustling Piazza del Popolo with its pavement cafés and pop-up book markets is a three-minute walk, as is the beautiful Villa Borghese. If shopping is your thing, the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso are five minutes on foot. Large families or groups of friends will find this apartment to be an excellent home base. As soon as you step into the marble-floored hall you get a feeling of old-world Italy. The hall is dotted with antiques and moving through to the living and dining room it’s all floor to ceiling bookcases and herringbone floor. We particularly love the main bathroom, sleek in monotone black and white, yet embracing the vintage with its Singer sewing machine washstand and glorious oval tub.

Not far from the Vatican, this apartment is an excellent family option. Though the living area isn't the largest, there's plenty of space across the five bedrooms. The kitchen is well-stocked if you fancy a home-cooked meal, but for something extra special, your host is happy to arrange a private chef for a fee. You'll also have access to a small balcony ideal for enjoying morning espressos and sipping sundowners. Location-wise, shops and restaurants are a short walk away, as is the iconic St Peter's Square. Further afield, but still within easy reach, are the city's other famous landmarks, putting you in a prime spot for exploring.

There are two apartments, making this ideal for groups of friends who want some space. The first is decorated with an eye-catching nod to Pop Art and street artists like Banksy, while the second taps into the romance of Rome with soft pastel shades and an elegant feel. 

You’re close enough to everything to explore on foot, but for those days when the heat is a little too much, you’ll be glad to be a three-minute walk from the Lepanto metro stop. You’re also in an area rife with restaurants, cafes and bars, so you don’t need to travel far for an exquisite meal or a chilled glass of wine. 

We like to start our day with a spot of people watching. Walk twelve minutes to Piazza del Popolo for a cappuccino with a view. From there, maybe you’ll tick off the Trevi Fountain – it’s fifteen minutes on the metro  – or meander the twenty-two minutes to the Spanish Steps. The Roman Forum is thirty-six minutes from the apartment – you’ll want to spend at least a couple of hours there, so pop into a trattoria for a pizza on the way. 

After a busy day in the bustling city, you’ll be glad to return to the apartment. Crack open a cold beer on the balcony in the late afternoon to soak up the atmosphere. After a brief respite, you’ll be ready to hit the town again.

Back at this home – it's comfortable and well-designed, with a calming colour scheme that is just what you need after a hectic day exploring the city. Bedrooms are smart and bright, and the murals add character and recall the city’s many frescoes. Vatican City, Castel Sant’Angelo and Piazza del Popolo are all just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Campo di Fiori are just twenty-five minutes on foot. Plus, the immediate neighbourhood is known for its great shopping and its numerous cafes and bars.

In it’s former life, this apartment was the home of a Roman painter. And while it has since been restored into a contemporary sanctuary, you can still see evidence of its artistic history. Up in the turret there is a study with impressive views across the city. The bedrooms make it easy to switch off and unwind, while the terraces provide the perfect spot for drinks and alfresco dining. Your host can arrange sweet extras like breakfast delivery or a welcome basket. Plus, it’s in a great location. From here you can walk to the nearest market and it’s possible to reach the Vatican in just twenty-minutes.

Comfort reigns supreme in this bright and appealing apartment – it’s easy to imagine a family or group of friends feeling very at ease in this rustic home. While there's no bold design or styling, the sober colours and abundance of wood make for a very relaxing and breathable environment to return to after days spent sightseeing. We really loved the unsuspecting little touches around the flat too, such as the Japanese-style painted wardrobe doors and the reclaimed cabinet. You'll notice plenty of tasteful artwork adorning the walls also. Come together in the traditional dining area for a quick coffee, before setting off to complete your tourist itinerary. We were surprised by just how quiet it was here, despite being in the heart of Rome. Walk to the historic Spanish Steps in just fifteen minutes – from there, go shopping and limoncello-sipping around the bustling Piazza di Spagna. Ascend back up the steps to one of the city's most beloved sights, Trevi Fountain, under eight minutes on foot from your new home.

Nestled just outside of Vatican City, this lovingly decorated home has a certain vintage feel that really is warm and welcoming, with a home away from home kind of feel. At full occupancy, one guest will sleep on a sofa bed – for more privacy, we’d stick to a guest count of two. Though you might not have panoramic views of the city from here, you'll be primely located in Prati, one of Rome's most fashionable neighbourhoods and modern epicentres.

Even though it’s actually quite new, Vintage Rosa feels like it could be from the 50s (can you tell from the name?). In a good way, that is – it has a great balance of the old-fashioned aesthetic and modern fittings, so you won’t be stuck with sixty-year-old kitchen appliances. The whole building is run in the space between a hotel and a block of flats, as there’s more than enough to keep you independent, but you also get some extra services included, like cleaning every other day, and a reception during working hours.


Vintage Rosa

British eccentricity and retro vibes meet Roman warmth here. This apartment, bedecked with vintage chandeliers and artwork, is tucked away in a historic villa within walking distance of Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese. The pretty pink bedroom overlooks the private garden, but can only sleep two guests – guests three and four will sleep on sofa beds in the open-plan living and dining space. There’s a petite kitchenette, and you’ll have a wealth of bistros and restaurants nearby. Cosy and charming, this is a great choice of base for couples and small families.

A stone's throw from the MAXXI, this apartment will be a hit with art aficionados. But it's not just the proximity to the museum that makes it a stand out – the Olympic Stadium is a short stroll across the famous Music Bridge, Piazza del Popolo is a fifteen-minute tram ride away, and the neighbourhood is home to pizzerias, restaurants, and cocktail bars. We're also big fans of this pad's design – particularly the bold wallpaper and sleek green tiles. There's also plenty of space for a couple or a solo traveller. We think it's a great option for those seeking a comfortable stay in a relaxed neighbourhood.

If you love sports, then this apartment’s location will appeal – it’s within walking distance of the Olympic Stadium and the Campo Centrale for tennis fans. The River Tiber is also a short stroll away, while the National Museum of 21st Century Art is reachable on foot. This home has a kitchen and dining area, but there’s no lounge. If you’re here for work, though, each good-sized, comfy bedroom has a desk (and a modern en-suite). This place is an ideal alternative to a hotel.

If you're a group heading to Rome, or perhaps two families travelling together, this home offers a colourful, arty alternative to run-of-the-mill apartments. With their own entrance accessed through an outer gate and a small outside space where you can sip coffee in the morning, they've been recently renovated with artistic flair. 

The one-bedroom apartment sleeps up to four, thanks to a sofa bed in the lounge, and this one is mainly decked out in red and black. High ceilings and a brick-effect wall make for a bright, fun place to put your feet up at the end of the day, and we particularly love the neon sign and touches of Americana. Meanwhile, the other apartment is an ode to monochrome, with modern, designer furniture and a minimalist feel. Both have open-plan living spaces with dining tables and fully-equipped kitchens, and both have sleek, stylish bathrooms.
