From floors to ceilings, this apartment in central Rome maintains a sense of originality in its decor and finishes. It blends in with its historic surrounding – the bustling Piazza del Popolo with its pavement cafés and pop-up book markets is a three-minute walk, as is the beautiful Villa Borghese. If shopping is your thing, the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso are five minutes on foot. Large families or groups of friends will find this apartment to be an excellent home base. As soon as you step into the marble-floored hall you get a feeling of old-world Italy. The hall is dotted with antiques and moving through to the living and dining room it’s all floor to ceiling bookcases and herringbone floor. We particularly love the main bathroom, sleek in monotone black and white, yet embracing the vintage with its Singer sewing machine washstand and glorious oval tub.

However, it seems to fly under the radar of most visitors, so you can browse the exclusive boutiques that line Cola di Rienzo (300m away) unbothered by gaggles of tourists. Step off the main thoroughfare and you'll discover low-key neighbourhood haunts and cool kerbside cafes where you can while away an afternoon over a long lunch.

The Flaminio quartiere sits in a bend of the River Tiber and lays claim to this classic Roman apartment. The interiors are 1930s inspired with vintage furnishings, rich dark wood accents and original terrazzo floors. After an industrious day exploring the Eternal City, we loved disappearing into what can only be described as a king-sized sofa, designed by Philippe Starck. Sip a cappuccino by the window overlooking the Monte Mario Observatory or take a seat at the dining table and enjoy a traditional cornetto. While you’re a fifteen-minute car ride to the centre of Rome, there’s plenty to do in your locale. In the summer, catch an outdoor movie at the Cinema Titian Roma, ten-minutes walk to the north, with the striking MAXXI contemporary art and architecture museum right next door. The manicured lawns of Villa Borghese are located twenty minutes south – perfect for picnics and afternoon strolls. Closer to home, you’ll find traditional wine bars and simple osterias along the tree-lined Viale del Vignola, just footsteps away.

Antique furniture, dark wooden windows, and tiled floors all combine to encapsulate the feeling of elegance, a feeling which is common in Flaminio. This isn’t the place to stay if you want to be in the very middle of the action, but you get a sense of calm and a detachment from the tourist crowds, which is more than worth the extra journey time.

Comfort reigns supreme in this bright and appealing apartment – it’s easy to imagine a family or group of friends feeling very at ease in this rustic home. While there's no bold design or styling, the sober colours and abundance of wood make for a very relaxing and breathable environment to return to after days spent sightseeing. We really loved the unsuspecting little touches around the flat too, such as the Japanese-style painted wardrobe doors and the reclaimed cabinet. You'll notice plenty of tasteful artwork adorning the walls also. Come together in the traditional dining area for a quick coffee, before setting off to complete your tourist itinerary. We were surprised by just how quiet it was here, despite being in the heart of Rome. Walk to the historic Spanish Steps in just fifteen minutes – from there, go shopping and limoncello-sipping around the bustling Piazza di Spagna. Ascend back up the steps to one of the city's most beloved sights, Trevi Fountain, under eight minutes on foot from your new home.

Part of the joy of visiting Rome is being in the thick of things – busy side-street eateries, crowds clamouring to see the sights, and dodging Vespas as you explore the city. This property is in the perfect location.

There are two apartments, making this ideal for groups of friends who want some space. The first is decorated with an eye-catching nod to Pop Art and street artists like Banksy, while the second taps into the romance of Rome with soft pastel shades and an elegant feel. 

You’re close enough to everything to explore on foot, but for those days when the heat is a little too much, you’ll be glad to be a three-minute walk from the Lepanto metro stop. You’re also in an area rife with restaurants, cafes and bars, so you don’t need to travel far for an exquisite meal or a chilled glass of wine. 

We like to start our day with a spot of people watching. Walk twelve minutes to Piazza del Popolo for a cappuccino with a view. From there, maybe you’ll tick off the Trevi Fountain – it’s fifteen minutes on the metro  – or meander the twenty-two minutes to the Spanish Steps. The Roman Forum is thirty-six minutes from the apartment – you’ll want to spend at least a couple of hours there, so pop into a trattoria for a pizza on the way. 

After a busy day in the bustling city, you’ll be glad to return to the apartment. Crack open a cold beer on the balcony in the late afternoon to soak up the atmosphere. After a brief respite, you’ll be ready to hit the town again.

This home has a fantastic location in upscale Prati – it's just over a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, while the high-end boutiques in Via Cola di Rienzo are a twenty-minute stroll away. You'll also find an array of bars and gourmet restaurants on your doorstep. Trionfale Market, on the other hand, with its food and flower stalls, is just over a five-minute saunter. So, take some fresh produce back to this home and whip up a Roman-style feast to enjoy in the elegant dining area. Later, entertain your guests at the piano here, or relax with a glass of prosecco. In the morning, fling open the French doors in the bedroom, then enjoy a hearty breakfast before starting another exciting day exploring all the Eternal City's wonderful sights.

We love this location – the area's many wine bars and gourmet eateries are a stone's throw away, as is the Vatican when you're in the mood to sightsee. Juliet balconies overlook the pretty streets back home, pairing nicely with the sleek and minimalist interiors. The sofa bed can accommodate two guests, making it ideal for short stays. You'll also have access to a private terrace – it may not have any views, but it's still a pleasant spot to unwind in the evenings.

In it’s former life, this apartment was the home of a Roman painter. And while it has since been restored into a contemporary sanctuary, you can still see evidence of its artistic history. Up in the turret there is a study with impressive views across the city. The bedrooms make it easy to switch off and unwind, while the terraces provide the perfect spot for drinks and alfresco dining. Your host can arrange sweet extras like breakfast delivery or a welcome basket. Plus, it’s in a great location. Even though it’s actually quite new, Vintage Rosa feels like it could be from the 50s (can you tell from the name?). In a good way, that is – it has a great balance of the old-fashioned aesthetic and modern fittings, so you won’t be stuck with sixty-year-old kitchen appliances. The whole building is run in the space between a hotel and a block of flats, as there’s more than enough to keep you independent, but you also get some extra services included, like cleaning every other day, and a reception during working hours.

A stone's throw from the MAXXI, this apartment will be a hit with art aficionados. But it's not just the proximity to the museum that makes it a stand out – the Olympic Stadium is a short stroll across the famous Music Bridge, Piazza del Popolo is a fifteen-minute tram ride away, and the neighbourhood is home to pizzerias, restaurants, and cocktail bars. We're also big fans of this pad's design – particularly the bold wallpaper and sleek green tiles. There's also plenty of space for a couple or a solo traveller.
