This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

If you can tear yourself away from these eye-catching city scenes, take a stroll through the home to explore. The original tiled floors are reminiscent of a Roman bath house, with ornate mosaic patterns throughout the lounge, hall, and bedroom. We love the melange of classic features alongside modern, psychedelic art on the walls and Starck-style ghost chairs for dining and working. Just like the ancient city, this home has entered the 21st century in the most elegant fashion.

With a bright living area and a cool industrial design, this apartment is perfect for groups. Three comfortable bedrooms and a double sofa bed ensure there's enough space for everyone – we can easily imagine family breakfasts in the kitchen before setting off on a Roman adventure. All the essentials are covered, too, from air conditioning to kitchen appliances. Plus, the location right by Termini train station makes zipping around the city centre a breeze. You can also walk to the Colosseum, less than thirty minutes away.

Situated on the famous street Via Merulana in the San Giovanni district, this is an excellently located home in a lively bourgeois area with good transport links to the rest of the city. The rooms are large and bright, all recently renovated with minimal modern design. The style of the home is more industrial than cosy thanks to the steel kitchen, prevalence of clean lines and minimal contemporary lighting, but that doesn’t compromise the comfort of the home. We did notice that the WiFi was notably slow, however, which might pose a problem for some guests.

The seven-minute walk to the Colosseum from this bijou apartment is lined with centuries-old churches and family-run pizzerias. Surrounded by ancient buildings and architecture, there’s no doubt you’re in the old centre here. Just beyond the Colosseum, you’ll find the sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum a ten-minute walk away. 

Within the apartment, you’ve got a calming haven of traditional furnishings and gold trim. The front door opens straight into the living room, where there’s a little collection of books for a holiday read. The cute, provincial-tiled kitchen is tucked away in one corner and there’s room to dine in here too. It’s the bedrooms that really grabbed us here though, with their hand-painted pastel murals of the Italian countryside above both beds. The little sit-outery with its bistro set that catches the sun in the morning isn’t a bad spot either.

Step off a leafy Esquilino street and through the huge old doors to find this fourth-floor apartment in all of its whitewashed glory. Pristine and modern, the home is touched with earthy tones—olive and celery greens, taupe and leafy houseplants. All of your mod-cons are neatly concealed by a veneer of light oak, so you can keep your attention firmly on devouring the welcome wine and snacks provided by your host. Turn right out of your building and take the ten-minute waltz over to Parco del Colle Oppio for its ancient ruins and prime views of the mighty Colosseum. When it’s time for dinner, you couldn’t be better placed to sample authentic Italian grub. Your home is surrounded by family-run bakeries, ristorantes and those all-important gelaterias.

Ask any Roman and they'll tell you how the Lateranense Palace isn’t as famous as the neighbouring Dome of St. Peter’s, but when you see it from a vantage point like this, it’s hard to say exactly why that is. It’s visible from the living room, balcony and one of the bedrooms, tying the whole apartment together in its grandeur and elegance. Plus you're only a fifteen-minute walk from one of the seven wonders of the world – the Colosseum. Inside, the home is bright and roomy, with a stylish navy sofa, gold accents, tasteful artwork and plenty of light reads that makes for a calming spot to unwind with a good book and a limoncello. Watch the wondering tourists below, as you bask in the sunshine streaming into the apartment. You can simply stroll out of your apartment building and immediately see the striking building. It's an inspiring sight that adds instant excitement to your Roman adventure.

Alongside the Colosseum, you're also just 600 metres away from the archaic Roman Forum. Insightful and fascinating, the ancient ruins stand proud against contemporary infrastructure in an impressive feat of traditional architecture. 

Intertwined between the iconic landmarks, you'll find a plethora of cute cafes and fine restaurants. Authentically Italian menus combine with international dishes to suit every palette.

Some of Rome's most famous sights are only ten minutes away on foot – The Colosseum and The Forums – yet this neighbourhood is anything but a tourist trap. There's an authentic atmosphere in this part of town, with plenty of traditional eateries, vintage stores and chic wine bars loved by locals. It's also pretty quiet, all things considered. You'll find this apartment on a pretty street, only a few steps from Parco del Colle Oppio. With a bright living area, stylish bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms, this home is a calm place to escape the hustle and bustle. Pour yourself a glass of Italy's finest wine and relax on the sofa or around the glass dining table. If you're in the mood to rustle up a meal, the compact kitchen has plenty of dishes and culinary gear, though it's on the smaller side. There's even a desk in the second bedroom if you need to check work emails, but if it were up to us, we'd spend every day sipping espresso in one of the cafes, basking in the magic of Rome.

Oh, the view from this Roman home – we go weak at the knees every time we see it. It makes a good case for the best in the city. Who wouldn't want to wake up to the vistas of the magnificent Colosseum? We can imagine on warm summers evening opening up the windows and drinking a glass of prosecco while admiring this ancient amphitheatre set against a red sky. Let's not forget the interiors here, though – they are lovely and fit in perfectly with the old-world grandeur that emanates from Rome. We especially adore the marble-clad bathrooms and plush velvet fabrics, all chosen by a Count. If you can tear yourself away from the windows, history lovers can walk to the Basilica di San Clemente in under five minutes, while St. Peter's Square can be reached in a quarter of an hour.

The three things that stand out about Urban Meadow are the location, the building, and the balcony. Beyond these, it’s a very comfortable, but not outstanding, place, but once you factor them in, everything changes. It’s on one of the nicest streets in Monti, and is not only impressive from the street, but also from the building’s courtyard. The steel and glass that dominate contrast well with the exterior façade, and the abundance of plants lifts the spirits of the whole area.

We think this industrial-style loft makes for a memorable stay in the Eternal City. The decor mixes contemporary and character features – you'll find everything from exposed brick walls and beamed ceilings to a unique glass floor that overlooks the lounge. It's got plenty of space for everyone, and the extra touches like board games and snacks are much appreciated. Plus, the location is fantastic for exploring near and far. Both the Colosseum and the metro station are within walking distance. Shops and restaurants are easily reached on foot, too.

What a great location this lovely home has – it's just a six-minute stroll from Emperor Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), while the Colosseum is eight minutes on foot and the Roman Forum is ten.

Back at this apartment, housed in a 19th-century building, there's a wonderful terrace with a comfy sofa, which is just what you need after a day exploring the Eternal City. There's a dining table here too, perfect for alfresco suppers of cacio e pepe (a Roman staple of pasta, pepper and cheese). Inside, we love that there's a lot of natural light, which helps the trendy Sansevieria plants to thrive. Mix up a Campari in the modern kitchen and relax on the plush purple sofa – bliss.



Odes & Hymns

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. Or just stay local and wine and dine the night away at the restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep, including a delicious gelateria right downstairs for some quintessentially Italian gelato. 

It Will Be So

You'll find this bright apartment in dreamy Monti, surrounded by some of the Eternal City's best. Iconic sights such as the Colosseum and Pantheon are within walking distance. Though the kitchenette is the perfect place to practice newly-acquired pasta-making skills, several restaurants with authentic cuisine are right on your doorstep. The mix of old and new – rustic rafters against a sleeker kitchen – makes it easy on the eyes. We especially like the bedroom mural. Central and charming, it's ideal for a romantic getaway and curious explorers.

Decked out in intense colours and on the fourth floor with no lift, Gladiator Stripes isn’t one for the faint-hearted. We’re big fans of the look though, and it’s clear that the place is very well-kept. The host, Mary, also pushes the boat out when it comes to service - there’s a daily cleaning service and someone at reception until 11pm, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about.

On a quiet street near San Giovanni in Laterano, this eclectic apartment offers a haven to return to after a day in the bustling centre. Though the neighbourhood is quiet, you’re still only a fifteen-minute stroll away from the Colosseum and Roman Forum. If you don’t fancy stretching your legs, the Manzoni metro station is a three-minute walk, putting all of Rome at your fingertips. This loft apartment is a mix of glamour and kitsch – think gilded mirrors, leopard-print throws and thick, red velvet curtains. Though the arched windows and exposed beam ceiling reassure that you’re in an old quarter of Rome. The eclectic fireplace set in a traditional mantle is a nice homely touch too.

This enviably located apartment looks out directly over the ancient Colosseum. Better still, the Roman Forum is a short walk away, and restaurants, cafes and bars are on the doorstep. At capacity, one guest will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area, though it may not be the most comfortable option for an extended stay. And while the kitchen and bathroom are a little dated, we think the view more than makes up for it.


Roman Reflection

No monument captures the spirit of Rome quite as like the Colosseum, and being as close to the amphitheatre as this home is a real privilege. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

Situated right around the corner from the iconic Colosseum, this three-bedroom apartment is the ideal spot for families and groups seeking the best that Rome has to offer. In the morning, enjoy your coffee out on the balcony, where you can feel the bustly atmosphere of the Eternal City emanate from the streets. While the decor and furniture can feel a bit dated in parts, the true highlight of this home is its stellar location – with the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just down the road, you can’t go far wrong in this home.

We found plenty of things to love about this flat. For a start, the location’s excellent, nestled as it is between Termini and Monti stations. The immediate locale is full of bars and restaurants, while many of Rome's must-see sights are within walkable distance — Trevi Fountain can be reached in under twenty minutes' walk, for example. The interior design is simple, but very welcoming and well thought through — the plants, in particular, bring the space to life and you'll be grateful for the little touches, such as blackout curtains in the living room and electric blinds in the bedroom. What really sets it apart, though, is Claudia’s hosting. She’s thought of absolutely everything, and can even point you in the direction of the best places to eat in a city notorious for its tourist traps.


Origins & Ideas

The small touches really help to elevate Alchemy and give it a sense of character. It’s not the largest space, but the design manages to make the most of what’s available, and there are a few nice features like the Art Deco mirrors. The façade is on the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which is Rome’s largest square, so it’s very well-placed for the station. The only thing to mention is that the surrounding area doesn’t have a lot of tourists yet, and can sometimes feel a little empty.

Just steps away from Rome's Termini train station, this apartment is in a really convenient location. The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are all within walking distance too. There’s also a range of pizzerias, trattorias and cafes surrounding this home which has an open-plan living space with a modern kitchen. This room also sleeps two guests on a sofa bed when needed – the apartment is perfect for a city break.

The way Onsen is laid out makes it quite an unusual flat. You have two separate suites, each with its own kitchen (and each available to rent individually), which share a small courtyard. It’s the kind of place that, if misjudged, could be quite soulless, but luckily that’s not the case here. The design, heavy on plants and nods to Japanese culture, fits the space perfectly, and amplifies the brightness and sense of space. And while there isn’t much entertainment on offer (most notably, there’s no TV), the streets of Monti outside should provide all the entertainment you need.


Onsen

The thing that we really want to focus on here is Claudia’s hosting. We’ll come to the Origins & Principles itself in a minute, but it’s worth highlighting the attention to detail that she’s put in here – everything from bathrobes to kitchen supplies has been provided. And that’s not to say that she hasn’t done a good job on the interiors, which are fairly calm, but with pops of bright colour in the right places to keep it lively. The fact that the flat is positioned between Termini station and Monti is just an added bonus.


Origins & Principles

This sixth-floor loft apartment does things differently. There’s no TV for starters, and the bedrooms are comfortable, yet not breathtaking. So what caught our discerning eye? Step out onto the 200sq/metre rooftop terrace, overlooking picturesque Rome and all of your questions will be answered. The decked terrace comes with a veranda cover, plenty of sofa seating and a table for alfresco dining – we can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, eating, drinking and laughing as the sun goes down. While there's certainly a Roman rustic charm to the home, with its wooden floorboards and low beamed ceilings, the modern details really bring the living room and kitchen to life. Light pours in through the sleek crittall windows, extending the space out to the terrace and creating a bright and airy kitchen-diner area – the modern breakfast bar is the perfect spot to sip your morning espresso. When – all caffeinated and ready to explore – you do eventually peel yourself away from that beautiful terrace, the home's location is ideal for discovering the city's ancient sights. Walk to the Colosseum in twenty minutes and visit the Roman Forum, under three kilometres from home. Termini train station is also a twenty-minute stroll away, connecting you to the rest of the city in no time at all. While a wander through the immediate neighbourhood will have you passing plenty of pastry shops, traditional trattorias and cocktail bars – with so much to see and do, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Want to be a short walk away from one of Rome's most famous landmarks? Then this apartment in Monti is spot-on. It's a stone's throw from the Colosseum and right around the corner from Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore. Shops, restaurants, and metro stations are also nearby. Back home, the blue and yellow colour scheme is instantly cheery. Your host has taken care of all the essentials, including a desk ideal for remote working. Two guests will sleep on the sofa bed (which may be a squeeze for everyone), but otherwise, it's a fantastic space to call home.

With prints from Piranesi, Cambellotti and even Karl Lagerfeld, Jigsaw Frame is an art-lovers dream. Staying here, you get the sense of someone's home, rather than an anonymous holiday let. Brimming with character, the home offers a true taste of Italy through its authentic style and design. Think vintage mirrors, antique wooden furnishings and an eclectic array of artwork. Not to mention the retro kitchen that paints the perfect picture of what we imagine a quintessential Italian cooking corner to look like. In terms of location, you cannot get better than this. Just a three minute walk away from the world-renowned Colosseum and ancient Roman ruins, you'll be faced with stunning architectural views from the moment you step foot out of the door. Situated in the heart of Rome's Lazio district, enjoy lapping up the local cuisine at the many bars, restaurants and markets nearby. At the end of a long day on your feet, feel assured in knowing that with such a central address, you won't have far to go when you're ready to return to your home base.

You can expect excellent service, an immaculate home, and a helping hand (should you need it) during your stay at this bolthole in Rome. The location is outstanding – in the central district, renowned for its bohemian vibe, excellent street food, and alternative shopping. The cobbled streets are lined with bars and alfresco cafes that invite you to spend the day taking in the Roman atmosphere. You can also easily get to all the big sites, like the Colosseum, in less than five minutes. The apartment itself is a haven of neutral tones, and hardwood floors add a touch of class. Art depicting Roman scenes hangs on the wall, so there’s no forgetting you’re in the Italian capital. There’s also a little shared courtyard within the building, where you can take a seat at the benches and admire the medieval facade of the building – all sand-coloured walls and bright green shutters.

Odes & Oratorios

When it comes to location, you could hardly ask for a more convenient spot to be than this bright and modern apartment, situated just moments away from the Forum and the Colosseum. At the same time, you’ll benefit from being slightly removed from the main tourist tracks, able to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of one of Rome’s trendiest areas. 

Arrive to be welcomed by the light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen area, inviting you to kick off your shoes and relax after a long day of exploring the Eternal City. Lounge about on the plush sofa or gather everyone around the dining table for a light supper you’ll be able to rustle up with ease in the well-equipped kitchen. 

For a night of restful sleep head over to the cosy bedrooms, one offering a double bed and the second featuring two singles, with additional sleeping spaces in the living room. Wake up restored and ready for another day of la dolce vita. 

Outside your door, you’ll find yourself just steps away from the vintage stores and charming cafes of Monti and a ten-minute walk from all the splendour of Ancient Rome. 

Fellini's Dreams 

This cosy apartment in San Lorenzo is perfect for couples looking to explore Rome. That said, it can sleep up to four guests – but two will draw the short straw and be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room. It’s also worth noting that the bedroom is on a mezzanine level, so at full occupancy, privacy is limited. With a stripped-back, fuss-free style, it may not be to everyone’s taste, but with easy access to public transport, it’s ideal for exploring the city. 

The Roman Nights

Located in Monti, this apartment is an ideal base for exploring Rome on foot. Within walking distance, you’ll find parks, monuments, shops, restaurants, and iconic sights like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. And if you’re heading further afield, you’ll find two metro stations just a five-minute walk away. This home is a great fit for families, with sharing-style bedrooms featuring bunk beds and singles – your host can also provide a cot and high chair for little ones. This bold little place isn’t aimed at fans of neutral tones and understated design. Deep colours are everywhere, and they really help the apartment stand out from the crowd. It's not a huge space but it's extremely well laid-out and the lack of a seating area indoors is more than made up for by having a balcony with seats outside. The kitchenette is pretty well-equipped for its size and there's a little dining spot just for two. The host, Maria, really pushes the boat out when it comes to service – there’s a daily cleaning service, as well as free laundry, great breakfast options, and recommendations of all the places tourists don’t know about. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also only a couple of minutes walk from the Colosseum.

Gladiator Rose

Step out of your building’s front door to be immediately greeted by the Colosseum at the end of the road. It’s an unrivalled location and despite neighbouring a global landmark, the quieter street retains a local charm. Inside, the apartment is wonderfully maintained with thoughtful design. The original character of the property shines – timber beams have been lovingly restored and counterpoint some of the more modern touches. We particularly liked the textured wallpaper above the bed and the matching set of Smeg kitchen appliances. After sipping an espresso and watching the daybreak over the Colosseum from your window, hit the pavements and get a closer look at Rome’s headline acts. The Roman Forum, Arch of Titus and the Via Sacra are all within a ten-minute walk. Plus, museums, piazzas and the iconic Pantheon are a seventeen-minute bus trip or ten-minute taxi ride away.

This modern and well-presented home is situated in the superb neighbourhood of Monti. Not only is this recently gentrified area a hub for outstanding street food, alternative fashion, and traditional alfresco café culture, it’s also within easy walking distance of top attractions, like the Colosseum or the Forum. Moreover, guests can easily walk to the Colosseum or the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore from here, and in a scenic twenty-five-minute stroll, a full day of exploring the Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Pantheon, etc. can all be achieved, all the while opportunities for the finest dining, wine tasting, and shopping are around every corner, and not to be missed.
