If you want to check out some of Rome’s main attractions, the Trevi Fountain and Colosseum are around a half an hour walk or fifteen-minute ride away. It's about a twenty-minute walk to the Pantheon, and though other landmarks like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum are around a half-an-hour away, this excellent location is well worth it. Spend afternoons roaming the pretty-as-a-postcard alleyways and people-watching in the piazzas, then grab an alfresco aperitif in the evenings at one of the world-class trattorias. After a busy day, come home to this snug apartment and relax in style. It has plenty of details that set it apart from the crowd, from the bold wallpaper to the ceramic leopard that greets you as you enter. The wooden beams and large windows hark back to Trastevere's history, and though it may be small, it feels like a cosy home-from-home, perfect for a couple wanting a romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.

A vineyard view isn’t what you expect from an apartment in the heart of Rome, but that’s what you get at this home. The study (or second bedroom) overlooks the vines of Rome’s Botanic Gardens, as though you’re in Tuscany or Chianti rather than the hip suburb of Trastevere. Bars and local trattoria fills the buzzing streets, but this apartment is a haven of calm amidst it all. The interior is a modern medley of soft green and grey, while the exterior boasts the traditional wooden shutters of medieval Italy. Big, arched doors in the master bedroom open up to a private terrace, dappled with greenery and set up with a couple of deckchairs and a drinks table. There’s also a terrace off the living room, with dining for four – perfect for an aperitivo before hitting the bars of Trastevere.

Ideally situated in Trastevere, this fuss-free base is an excellent starting point for sightseeing. Many of the city's must-see landmarks, including Camp de' Fiori and the Pantheon, are within walking distance. Even better, you've got a bevvy of art galleries, boutiques and trattorias nearby – after all, there's a reason this neighbourhood is considered the most charming in Rome. While the interiors here are rather dated, the brick ceilings and arched doorways add some character. The bedroom includes a desk for remote work, while the living room has a sofa bed for two guests. It's not the biggest, but it'll do the trick for an Eternal City getaway.

It’s worth noting that the bed in bedroom two is raised and only accessible via a ladder – it won’t be suitable for everyone.

It’s easy to see the lengths that your host, Luca has gone to with this home to really bring a snug studio space alive—it’s full of interesting details which simultaneously stand alone and work in harmony to tie the place together. From the textured, botanical print wallpaper to the gold sunburst mirror and vitalising forest green accents, its quirkiness fits in well with the local area, famous for its individuality and bohemian spirit. Your next-door neighbour is pretty interesting too, you share a wall with the 600-year-old Church of Sant'Agata—fortunately, the bells no longer ring so you can indulge in plenty of lie-ins. Take to the meandering cobblestone streets where colourful buildings give way to wide-open piazzas and wandering side streets filled with rustic bars and authentic trattorias. What’s more, some of the city’s best attractions, like the Colosseum, Marcello Theatre and the Spada Gallery, are well within a thirty-minute walk from your Roman bolthole.

Despite a small footprint, Saguaro makes great use of the space it has. The mezzanine creates a feeling of openness while the colours brighten the place. We also really liked Iacopo, who we found really patient and helpful (even for a Plum host). The area is an interesting one, and depending on your point of view, could be considered a downside, as it’s a bit out of many of the main tourist hotspots. It is, however, an opportunity to experience Rome as a Roman would, free from the crowds and vendors.

Situated in Monteverde, this apartment boasts a charming rooftop terrace with plenty of space for you to relax and enjoy alfresco meals. From here, it's a short walk or bus ride to the quirky Trastevere district, with a great selection of pubs, eateries and shops, plus a well-connected Metro station. The home itself is perfectly practical for two or three guests – though the third person will be sleeping on a sofa bed. It's also worth noting that this home is located on the third floor without a lift, so we recommend it for those who can easily manage stairs.

Here, the city's busiest sights are left behind for charming backstreets, lined by cosy cafes and shops. You'll be able to stroll along the River Tiber, take a trip to the Basilica Di Santa Maria (a two-minute walk away), and come back to relax in this welcoming apartment all in an afternoon's escapades. With sleek bathrooms and two truly comfortable bedrooms as well as extra space on the sofa bed, this humble abode would suit a group of friends in Rome for a few days perfectly. While there may be lots of sights to tick off around the city, the home invites guests to unwind in pure comfort as the warm, earthy tones and rustic charm throughout, makes for a laid-back ambience worth writing home about. We particularly love dark wooden doors and beams that run across the ceilings – as well as the beautiful stone sink in the master bathroom. Tucked down a quiet vicolo in Trastevere, this home positions you away from the crowds and yet just a short walk from Rome's top historical attractions, including the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Note that you'll need to climb stairs to reach the entrance of this home. However, there's plenty of space to relax, and a sofa bed to accommodate groups of up to four guests. You'll also find a table if you need to work from home. The kitchen lacks an oven, but that said, the area is renowned for its culinary delights, so we reckon you'll be out sampling the local eateries most evenings.

In a little old palazzo in the heart of Trastevere, Soft Pastelli is a sweet apartment - not massive but plenty of room for what it is. The walls are painted in lovely pastels, giving it an old-fashioned (in the best way) feel and each bedroom also has an en-suite, so there’ll be no waiting for the shower. The only real issue with Soft Pastelli is the lack of natural light, which is a very common problem in the neighbourhood due to the old buildings and narrow alleyways.

Stroll across the River Tibet for twenty-five minutes and you'll wind up at the Roman Forum where you'll spend hours exploring and unearthing its history. From there continue on to the Colosseum, before heading back home for some well-deserved downtime. Enjoy panoramic views over the neighbouring rooftops as you take the elevator up to the top floor, where you'll find your apartment set away from the hustle of it all. Any discussion of Savannah has to start with the roof terrace, a little rectangle of serenity nestled in the rooftops of Trastevere. There is furniture up there and even a canopy, so you can relax while hiding from the midday sun. The interior is simple but charming, with a working fireplace in the living room - perfect for those cosy winter nights. The bathroom is a little basic - especially if it’s being shared by four - and it’s worth noting that there is no lift in the building, but otherwise Savannah is a lovely base in Rome's most bohemian neighbourhood.

This retro-chic apartment of offers a slightly different experience from many of our other homes in Rome. Rather than the bustle of the tourist centre, you’ll be in the leafy, twentieth-century streets of Monteverde Vecchio where traditional pasta restaurants and pubs serving artisan beer sit alongside weekly markets and antique shops. 
 
It’s a fitting locale for this historic apartment, as the host’s family have lived here since 1927, and some of the elegant furnishings, portraits, and other artworks decking the apartment’s walls go back further still. We love the antique camera that creates a memorable welcome, as well as the blue kitchen that provides the main sociable hub here. Gather together for breakfasts of fresh coffee and locally bought pastries at the table, or better yet, step put onto the private terrace for a sunny start to the day. This is also the ideal spot to treat yourself to a glass of Italian red before sampling the local trattorias, while the bedrooms wait to drift you off into a peaceful night’s sleep after a busy day of fun and sightseeing. 
 
Speaking of exploring, head to the  Porta Portese market in Trastevere on Sundays to experience Rome’s oldest flea market (a twenty-five-minute walk) and enjoy a stroll along the Tiber River, eighteen minutes away on foot. You’re also a thirteen-minute walk from Villa Sciarra, while the famous Mouth of Truth is forty minutes on foot from your door.

The open-plan living-dining arrangement is great for bigger groups while enjoying Prosecco Negronis before heading out to enjoy a famously unhurried dinner at a local trattoria. You’re just one typically winding Roman street away from the south bank of the River Tiber, where a twenty-minute walk via the Ponte Garibaldi takes you to the iconic Pantheon and a ten-minute car ride places you right in the heart of the Vatican City.

The kitchen here is basic, so you won’t be able to test your culinary skills too much – but with restaurants lining the streets below, meals out are a must. And with Trastevere station nearby, you'll have easy access to public transport when you’re ready to explore Rome.

Sure, at full occupancy two people will have to take the sofa bed in the living room, but it won’t be at any real expense of lounge space. The terrace is an added bonus here, just the spot for an evening glass of limoncello – it is slightly overlooked by neighbouring homes, but that’s unlikely to worry you as the Italian sun warms your skin.

This pied-à-terre makes for a wonderful base for Roman holidays. It’s a comfortable and convenient home in the lively Trastevere district, with all the major sights within easy reach. 

The incredible views of the city from Belvedere del Gianicolo are a ten-minute walk away, and you have your pick of some of the best restaurants right on your doorstep. It takes twenty-one minutes to meander along the river to Castel Sant’Angelo, and twenty-seven minutes to reach the Roman Forum – slightly longer if you stop into bars and cafes for refreshments, which we absolutely would. If the crowds and heat start to tire you, you might like to recharge your batteries at Orto Botanico di Roma. This university-owned botanical garden is a five-minute stroll from the front door, and is a haven. 

The apartment itself is a nice calm space, with windows looking out onto the garden below. Everything you need for a city break is here, so you can really make it a home from home. Whip up tasty breakfasts to enjoy before heading out into the city, and spend your evenings sipping wine and relaxing, watching the sunset over the city from the comfort of your living room.

Tucked away in the atmospheric alleys of Trastevere lies this little gem of an apartment. Housed in a 17th Century building that was once a Roman monastery, there’s a feeling of grandeur about this property, with a sweeping staircase guiding you to the entrance. But once inside, it’s all fresh and contemporary interiors. Just the high ceilings tell of its historic beginnings and give the space a lofty, airy feel. We particularly love the striking sliding copper door – a smart way to close off the lounge space from the dining area should people choose to use the sofa bed as a second bedroom. And you’ll be guaranteed a good night’s sleep here, with room darkening shades in both rooms. Just don’t snooze too long with the beautiful piazzas of Trastevere and Rome’s sights waiting. Both the tram and bus stops are a mere two-minute walk away and in a few stops, you'll be in the heart of Rome. Alternatively, take a stroll over the river and you can be at Rome’s biggest sights, including the Colosseo and Pantheon, in under half an hour. Or perhaps a little longer to account for those gelato and pizza pitstops, naturally.

This third-floor apartment is perfectly placed for getting to know Rome, boasting a private balcony overlooking the street. There is the potential for some noise and parking outside may be tricky, but you'll have public transport nearby and attractions like the Basilica of Santa Maria are an easy walk away. The kitchen is fully equipped but quite small, and storage throughout is limited so we think it's best for short breaks or work trips. At full capacity, two guests will sleep on the comfy sofa bed, and your host can provide a free cot and high chair to make travelling with little ones a breeze.

This quirky home is full of eclectic charm and art that leaves you in no uncertain terms that you’re in Rome. Ideal for couples, there are romantic touches throughout, including an in-room bathtub in one of the bedrooms. Location-wise, you’ll be just a short walk from Trastevere Station and close to a tram stop, so you can easily explore the city’s sights. This is a private home slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. 

The Tiles of Rome

With enchanting views over the typically Roman neighbourhood of Trastevere, this home has a fabulous location. In the heart of Rome, strolling along its meandering medieval streets, you'll find Piazza of Santa Maria (three minutes on foot) – take a seat at one of the cafes here for a coffee or lunch. Then head over to Gianicolo Hill for incredible views of the Vatican's St Peter's Basilica, a fourteen-minute walk away. It's the same distance across the Ponte Sisto to Piazza Navona and a few minutes more to the Pantheon, while it's just over twenty-five minutes to the stunning Trevi Fountain (eighteen minutes by car).

Back at this home, whip up an Aperol spritz and then have a rest on the chaise sofa after exploring the Eternal City. Light floods into the apartment via multiple windows, allowing the many plants to thrive. If you're musical, you can tinkle the ivories on the small piano or cook up some cacio e pepe in the modern kitchen if you don't fancy eating out. We love the vistas from the living space and bedroom here. This place is perfect for a couple looking for a romantic bolthole or a business professional working in the city.

Situated in Trastevere, this apartment is surrounded by traditional restaurants and historic churches, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria, a short stroll away. Piazza Navona and the iconic Pantheon are also within walking distance – or if you prefer, your host can organise tours for you. After a busy day in Rome, you can relax on the balcony here, or in one of two living areas. One of the living spaces also has a sofa bed to sleep guests seven and eight. Book this home if you want to live like a local.

A balcony with views over the neighbourhood awaits at this home. Or, unwind inside and relax in the large and colourful living room. We should mention that guests three and four will be sleeping in the lounge on a sofa bed. The kitchen is quite compact, but it has been well-designed and has everything you need to cook some Italian cuisine. Location-wise, the neighbourhood allows you to live like a local, while a lot of Rome’s key landmarks are a metro ride away – the transport links here are excellent.

This colourful loft apartment is a splendid choice of base in Rome. It’s close to the beautiful Villa Doria Pamphili, where you can escape the crowds to explore the park – it’s an excellent spot for a picnic. When you want to see more of the Eternal City, you can hop on one of the many buses and trams nearby. The apartment is spread over two floors, with the bedroom on a mezzanine level above the living space. With one guest on the sofa bed in the living room and the mezzanine semi-open, privacy is limited, but it’s still a comfortable home-from-home.

Unpretentious and reassuring, Shoreline is comfortable, and the kind of place where things work without any fuss. It’s on the lower ground floor, so views are out of the question, but while it’s not overly bright, it’s not really any different to any number of the old flats in narrow streets closer to the centre of the city. However, as it’s in Monteverde, the streets are wide and lined with trees, the traffic much calmer, and the tourists far away.

Rome is often thought of in terms of narrow, winding alleyways and hidden passages. However, the grand scale of this home flies in the face of that perceived wisdom. It occupies two whole floors of an imposing villa (there's also a separate flat that you can add into the mix) in the residential district of Monteverde, an affluent area a little detached from the tourist crowds. While the house is undoubtedly impressive, it feels like a well-loved family home rather than a museum showpiece, which lends it a relaxed atmosphere that we loved. If you want to go in search of the action, you're around a twenty-minute walk from trendy Trastevere. This pretty pocket of Medieval Rome is packed with neighbourhood trattorias serving impeccable food, stylish speakeasies with intriguing cocktail menus, and all manner of vintage and antique boutiques where you can lose a couple of hours.

Comfortable and cosy, this apartment in Trastevere is a superb base in Rome. You’ll find historic trattorias, restaurants, and bars nearby, as well as many of the city’s sights. The apartment is just a few minutes from Piazza Venezia, San Pietro and Piazza del Popolo, and an easy walk from the Roman Forum. The apartment itself is equipped with everything you might need during your stay, including a small but practical kitchenette and a desk for remote working.

Nestled in the heart of Trastevere, this modern apartment is an ideal base for a family or a group of friends keen to be in the heart of the action. With a homely vibe and pops of colour providing character, you’ll find everything needed for a comfortable stay in this home. And location-wise, it ticks a lot of boxes. You don’t need a car to explore here – wander through the narrow alleys on foot, stopping off at authentic eateries and bars along the way.
