At this Prati penthouse, exploring Rome is a breeze. The Vatican Museums are 700 metres away, St. Peter's Basilica is a fifteen-minute stroll, and the nearest metro station is five minutes on foot. You'll find plenty of wine bars and trendy eateries nearby, too. Back home, the contemporary living area has a double sofa bed for two. A well-appointed kitchen is ideal for rustling up breakfast before heading out. Though the second bedroom and both showers are a little snug, we think the location more than makes up for it.

There’s also a stunning bathroom with a three-metre-high, chromotherapy-enabled shower. The design might come across as a bit cold, given the expanses of white and the lack of artwork, but the bed is really comfy, and there’s always the home cinema system to keep you entertained..

Despite the lack of seating in the living-come-dining room, each bedroom offers a unique space to unwind. Each one has its own look, filled with vintage paraphernalia, from records to typewriters (they also each have a TV – the flat isn’t entirely faithful to the 50s). The bathrooms are well-designed and metro tiled, while the kitchen’s equipped for home meals – but you’re in one of the restaurant hotspots (as if anywhere in Rome isn’t a restaurant hotspot), and there are some great places to eat very nearby. Visit the Castel Sant'Angelo for a cultural day trip, just ten minutes (on foot) from your front door or head to the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, less than a twenty-minute walk away.

Its grand sweeping boulevards and beautiful art nouveau buildings mean that it shouldn't be ignored. However, it seems to fly under the radar of most visitors, so you can browse the exclusive boutiques that line Cola di Rienzo (300m away) unbothered by gaggles of tourists. Step off the main thoroughfare and you'll discover low-key neighbourhood haunts and cool kerbside cafes where you can while away an afternoon over a long lunch.

If you're a group heading to Rome, or perhaps two families travelling together, this home offers a colourful, arty alternative to run-of-the-mill apartments. With their own entrance accessed through an outer gate and a small outside space where you can sip coffee in the morning, they've been recently renovated with artistic flair. 

The one-bedroom apartment sleeps up to four, thanks to a sofa bed in the lounge, and this one is mainly decked out in red and black. High ceilings and a brick-effect wall make for a bright, fun place to put your feet up at the end of the day, and we particularly love the neon sign and touches of Americana. Meanwhile, the other apartment is an ode to monochrome, with modern, designer furniture and a minimalist feel. Both have open-plan living spaces with dining tables and fully-equipped kitchens, and both have sleek, stylish bathrooms.

Just a short stroll from the nearest Metro station, it's just a couple of stops to the centre of the city, a twelve-minute walk across the bridge to Piazza del Popolo, or a half-hour walk to Vatican City.

You can tell that someone who loves to travel owns this wonderful apartment – every corner features a charming curio collected from somewhere fabulous. The result is a stylish and eclectic home that’s the perfect base for a truly authentic Roman holiday. 

The crowds of tourists are kept at a slight distance, across the river. This apartment can be found in Prati, a neighbourhood that’s favoured by the well-heeled locals. There are bars, restaurants and shops all within a stone’s throw of the apartment building, and the Lepanto metro station is a mere eight-minute walk away so when you’re ready to see the sights, it’s as easy as can be. 

Start your day by tucking into pastries and coffee on the terrace. There are glorious views of the Vatican, which is just a twenty-four-minute walk away. Watch the streets below come to life while you plan how you’ll spend your stay. After visiting the Vatican and St Peter’s Basilica, perhaps you’ll stroll to Sant’Angelo Bridge – it’s nineteen minutes away. Decide which of the restaurants you pass you’ll return to for dinner, and definitely indulge in a scoop or two of gelato. 

Depending on your stamina, everything is within walking distance but in those peak summer months, you’ll be grateful for how easy it is to explore on the metro. The journey to the Pantheon takes twenty-one minutes. After a day spent touring around the historic sights, the apartment is a delightfully chilled-out space to return to. Sit on the terrace as the sun sets, sipping wine – city breaks don’t get better than this.

This Prati pad is perfectly located for a trip to Rome. It's just a stone's throw from the River Tiber, only fifteen minutes or so from Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps. Closer to home, there's Castel Sant'Angelo and the neighbourhood's lively wine bars, boutiques, and gourmet restaurants. Part of an Umbertine palace, the apartment is equal parts modern and cosy. The living space isn't quite big enough for everyone, especially with the sofa bed in use. That said, with an eat-in kitchen and an array of comfortable bedrooms to retreat to, we think it does the job for groups wanting to be based in one of Rome's best locales.

Part of the joy of visiting Rome is being in the thick of things – busy side-street eateries, crowds clamouring to see the sights, and dodging Vespas as you explore the city. This property is in the perfect location.

There are two apartments, making this ideal for groups of friends who want some space. The first is decorated with an eye-catching nod to Pop Art and street artists like Banksy, while the second taps into the romance of Rome with soft pastel shades and an elegant feel. 

You’re close enough to everything to explore on foot, but for those days when the heat is a little too much, you’ll be glad to be a three-minute walk from the Lepanto metro stop. You’re also in an area rife with restaurants, cafes and bars, so you don’t need to travel far for an exquisite meal or a chilled glass of wine. 

We like to start our day with a spot of people watching. Walk twelve minutes to Piazza del Popolo for a cappuccino with a view. From there, maybe you’ll tick off the Trevi Fountain – it’s fifteen minutes on the metro  – or meander the twenty-two minutes to the Spanish Steps. The Roman Forum is thirty-six minutes from the apartment – you’ll want to spend at least a couple of hours there, so pop into a trattoria for a pizza on the way. 

After a busy day in the bustling city, you’ll be glad to return to the apartment. Crack open a cold beer on the balcony in the late afternoon to soak up the atmosphere. After a brief respite, you’ll be ready to hit the town again. 


Roaming Rome

Perfect for families seeking a serene retreat in Rome, this apartment is contemporary and calm. It sits on a quiet street just behind Castel Sant’Angelo, a short walk from the Vatican and its museums. Bustling piazzas are within easy reach, with restaurants, cafes, and gelaterias. The apartment is a modern home-from-home, with wooden floors and tall windows. There’s a kitchen to cook in, a desk for remote working, and a comfortable living room for lounging when you’re not out seeing the sights of Rome.

While you can’t actually see the Vatican walls from Three Stags, turn right out of the door and walk about twenty metres and they’re right there. It’s a great location, which is fitting as it’s a great flat. Rather than seeking to preserve a crumbling old flat, Valeria’s recently redone the whole place, updating it without losing the character of the original place. There’s tonnes of space, given that it only has one bedroom, so having a couple of extra people sleeping in the living room is no problem (though three might be a squeeze).

Even though it’s actually quite new, Vintage Rosa feels like it could be from the 50s (can you tell from the name?). In a good way, that is – it has a great balance of the old-fashioned aesthetic and modern fittings, so you won’t be stuck with sixty-year-old kitchen appliances. This second-floor apartment in a Prati building dating back to the 1940s illustrates how to incorporate some eccentricity into a home's interior design without going overboard. Colourful pieces of artwork, gold motifs and boldly patterned feature walls pop off satisfyingly against the white walls, while the silverback gorilla in the living room is a playful addition. The kitchen and bathrooms play it relatively simple in comparison but are equally notable for their high quality — we especially liked the whirlpool bathtub. The location is another plus point in our books. Castel Sant'Angelo and the surrounding Parco della Mole Adriana are only ten minutes' walk away, while Vatican City takes about a quarter of an hour to reach on foot.

You can’t visit Rome without visiting the Vatican City – luckily this stylish abode is just a five-minute stroll to St. Peter's Square. It’s also only a ten-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, as well as Castel Sant'Angelo with its large roof terrace offering breathtaking views across the city. Right on this apartment’s street, there’s a range of restaurants, gelaterias and cafés to choose from – we think this is a wonderful location. After all that sightseeing, you’ll need somewhere super comfortable to return to. If you don’t fancy eating out for dinner, cook some pasta and enjoy at the dining table, next to the window with views across the neighbourhood. The bedrooms, with little touches like the distressed metal lights, and warm parquet floors, make for a charming retreat. So, when in Rome, if you want the perfect setting, combined with a comfortable home, look no further.

Nestled just outside of Vatican City, this lovingly decorated home has a certain vintage feel that really is warm and welcoming, with a home away from home kind of feel. Despite only being a twenty-three-minute walk from the Vatican, this is a cute and surprisingly calming flat. It's housed in an early 20th-century building with heaps of Roman character, and yet modern and cosy inside with its playful pink colour scheme, light wood flooring and tasteful artwork.  After an afternoon taking in the delights of St. Peter's Basilica, devouring all sorts of pizza and limoncello-based drinks, return to the light and airy living space with a chic pink dining table at its core – perfect for coming together for a well-needed cuppa and a slice of a cake.
