Quite literally in the case of the gleaming chequerboard tiling, parquet-style flooring and black marble in the master bathroom, which reflect the light beautifully and make this home feel gloriously light. The open-concept kitchen-dining area feels geared towards shared mealtimes, which is only appropriate given the locale's reputation as a gastronomic hotspot. Stroll over to Testaccio's glass-roofed market in under ten minutes and pick up some fresh ingredients for a home-prepared feast. Fendi are one of the great design families in the world, so you can imagine how excited we were to test Mirror Sand. It’s inside the new Alda Fendi Foundation, designed by the superstar architect Jean Nouvel, and right next to the Roman Forums. It works similarly to a hotel, the apartment is geared towards the independence that you get with a proper living room and kitchen. We also liked the ridiculously deep bathtub – it’s a wonderful place to relax after a day in the bustle of Rome. You’ll never want to get out.

Design buffs need not look any further than Mirror Indigo – it’s inside the Alda Fendi Foundation, run by fashion royalty, and unlike anything else you’ll find in Rome. The ultramodern, stainless steel furniture and the antique Portuguese tiles go together perfectly, and create the overriding aesthetic of the space. It has two twin beds, rather than a double, and while the aesthetic seems spartan, each is very comfortable, and the level of service is equal to any you’d find in a five-star hotel.


Mirror Indigo

Finding anything wrong with Mirror Autumn requires some serious nitpicking. Everything is curated, designed specifically for the space, and of the absolute highest quality. We’re particular fans of the steel kitchen, and its juxtaposition with the wooden ceiling. It’s inside the Alda Fendi Foundation – tucked behind the Imperial Forums – and beyond the obvious style implications, it also means that the building offers some serious services. Anything you’d expect from a luxury hotel is available here, and there’s even a fancy restaurant on the fifth floor.


Mirror Autumn

Mirror Slate is the very definition of luxury. You get the independence of an apartment but all the services of a hotel suite – everything from a 24/7 concierge and daily cleaning, to a choice of pillows and a high-end restaurant in the building. It’s actually inside the Alda Fendi Foundation – an old palazzo that has been redone as part of a high-profile project, and houses some of the operations of the design giant. It’s almost beside the point to mention the achingly stylish flat itself, but you can be certain you’re in good hands.


Mirror Slate

The contrast between the old structure, with its plaster and ceiling beams, and the Koons-esque furniture in Mirror Sky is striking, even more so in the flesh than on a screen. It’s a bold move, but no less than you’d expect from a flat in the Alda Fendi Foundation. Rather than a traditionally autonomous apartment, here you get the benefits you’d normally associate with a five-star hotel, without losing any independence. There’s a 24/7 reception, a roof terrace, daily cleaning, even the option to choose the pillow best suited to you from a ‘menu’.


Mirror Sky

If we're to be completely honest, not everybody will be smitten by this apartment in the centre of Rome, especially when the small size is taken into consideration. However, those with a passion for stylish design are sure to fall for its unique charm.

The home sits within a 20th-century building that has been renovated by the French architect Jean Nouvel. The end result is a multifunctional space that includes this apartment, which blends industrial and minimalist trends to striking effect. You only have to look at the stainless steel kitchen and bathroom, as well as the monochrome sleeping quarters, to see what we mean.

Elsewhere in the building, there's an art gallery, restaurant and outdoor spaces that overlook the city skyline on the upper floors. Another big perk comes with the excellent location. In the space of ten minutes, you can wander over to the Colosseum and Imperial Forums, while Circus Maximus takes half that time to reach.

If it wasn’t for the old, exposed-stone walls, you’d think you’d stepped into a wendy house for grown-ups at this unique apartment. There are the outright eccentric touches like the aeroplane seats (complete with seatbelts and the interior of a fuselage) in front of the projector screen, and the small, quirky details like rainbow-bright dinnerware, fire-engine-red cabinets and huge paperclips on the walls. 

The bedroom is slightly more subdued, in terms of colour, but no less flamboyant. A vaulted, cathedral-style ceiling and archway optical illusion on the wardrobes gives the feeling of being in an ancient chapel. While the bathroom features a wall of art reminiscent of the Rennaisance greats. 

Set in an ancient park said to be where the she-wolf found Romulus and Remus, you’re a short walk from the Colosseum and Roman Forum. The streets around are surrounded by trattoria and gelato shops and there’s a historic monument nearly everywhere you turn, including in the grounds of this apartment.

The unique piece in Mirror Peach is the family tree, sketched on the wall, tracing the inhabitants of the palazzo for over one hundred years. It’s a beautiful way of tying the modern redesign (spearheaded by Alda Fendi and French architect Jean Nouvel) to the rich past that the building already has. The present, though, feels robust enough to stand up to that history. Staying here is an exercise in luxury – there’s even a menu from which you can choose your ideal pillow.

This elegant and light-filled apartment in the heart of Trastevere has stunning views over the Tiber and the iconic island beyond. With grand proportions, soaring windows, and refined finishes, it's a Roman retreat that's guaranteed to wow every guest. The double living room is perfect for social gatherings, while the stylish kitchen and dining area are fully equipped for practicing your best pasta dish. Each space feels curated yet comfortable, from the serene bedrooms to the two balconies. It's worth noting that at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. But with a setting and atmosphere this striking, it’s a small trade-off for such a remarkable stay.

River Rome

There are 'holiday homes' and holiday 'homes' – while the first functions as little more than a bed for the night, the second offers you a chance to experience a more authentic, everyday experience in your destination of choice. This cosy, city-centre apartment definitely falls into the latter category, and it's all the better for it. Of course, there are places you could stay closer to the most famous tourist sights, but here you have the chance to get stuck into real Roman life. Testaccio is the historic home of Rome's slaughterhouses. Once upon a time, its distinctive offal-based cuisine was served out of necessity. Nowadays, it has been elevated to a gourmet delicacy. For lunch, walk ten minutes to Trentatre, a chic cafeteria-style restaurant that serves up wholesome, seasonal dishes at incredibly competitive prices. For food on the go, pick up a trapizzino – a pizza pocket stuffed with sweetmeats. Alternatively, grab a seat at Checchino Dal 1887. Nowhere better represents the area than this six-generation family-owned and operated eatery. If the local cuisine inspires you, it’s easy to imagine yourself swanning through the local food markets and chatting to the vendors before whipping up dinner in the flat. With its innovative trattorias and cool craft breweries, a short five-minute walk to trendy Trastevere offers an entirely different atmosphere. And if you do need to get to the centre, it’s just a few stops on the metro.


Take Flight

Live like a Roman at this traditional apartment in the centuries-old Testaccio neighbourhood, sitting right on the pretty piazza. Surround yourself with history and culture, and be just a short stroll from the Circus Maximus, the Jewish Ghetto and the district of Trastevere. You'll find plenty of friendly bars and authentic restaurants nearby, as well as a village-like atmosphere running through the cobbled streets. And, after a day of sightseeing, return to your standing balcony for a refreshing drink as you perch and watch the locals go about their evening below. Although the apartment lacks a proper living area, we reckon you'll be too busy exploring the area to mind that much.

Gilded gold mirrors, antique furniture, rustic tiled flooring – what this studio apartment lacks in space, it more than makes up for in character. It's packed with plenty of charm, and compared to other apartments of its size, the kitchen is a dream – there's a hob, an oven and a traditional Italian espresso maker to kick-start your mornings. Whether you're unwinding on the sofa with a glass of wine and your favourite Netflix show or nodding off in the sumptuous bed, this apartment feels like a cosy homestead, albeit a tiny one. A stay here will have you living like a local – there's a real sense of community in this bohemian area, and you'll feel like you're part of the action as it unfolds right in front of your window. Trastevere is full of picturesque pedestrian lanes, excellent restaurants (there's a delicious trattoria right down the street) and craft ale pubs. It's a spot where Romans while away their evenings, but if you're in town to see the sights, hop on the tram or don your walking shoes, and you can reach Piazza Navona in fifteen minutes.

The feeling of a family home is hard to replicate on holiday, almost by definition. Even a place that has the right sleeping arrangements usually seems to be lacking something unquantifiable. As soon as we arrived at Fuchsia, we felt its inner warmth (and not just from the crackling stove). It’s quirky and individual – a far cry from more hotel-like apartments – but this sense of fun is never forced.

While the decor and furniture can feel a bit dated in parts, the true highlight of this home is its stellar location – with the Colosseum and the Roman Forum just down the road, you can’t go far wrong in this home.

Since 1869, the Campo de' Fiori has been a hub of market trading for fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers. And by evening, this charming square becomes a hub of alfresco dining spots and wine bars. With that in mind, this studio apartment is pretty convenient, at less than a minute away. But if you want to keep busy rather than relaxing with a glass of chianti, you’ll find palaces, museums, and statues all around – such as the Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, two minutes away. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture.
