The Duchess is a comfortable place with lots going for it, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with that view. A city like Rome is full of views, but even so, this one is special, and the terrace itself is beautiful, with the furniture, the awning and the flowers all around (in summer, at least). This, along with the various antiques inside, makes you feel as if you’re in a Rome that existed 200 years ago, one that’s since been lost.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Situated a short stroll from both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, this apartment has a fantastic location for exploring Rome. The Pantheon, the Roman Forum and much more are also within walking distance. There are a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood to enjoy too. From this home’s open-plan living space, there are wonderful views of the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin. You can take in the vistas from the dining table. The kitchen area is quite compact, we would say – there’s no oven, but there’s a hob and a microwave. But, with an address as great as this, will you be spending much time at the apartment?

When we say that this home is a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, we really mean it. Or should we say a coin’s throw? Watch where you’re aiming that penny, because this apartment is just steps away from Rome’s most striking water feature. In a quiet lane away from clamouring tourists, this spot has world-famous attractions, but with a local vibe. Stepping in to look around the decor, you notice a delightful mixture of old and new. Keep an eye out for chunky wooden beams, parquet floors, and original masonry as you settle down on antique furniture. However, we feel that this home is somewhat of a landmark itself. As you step inside, you can help but be taken aback by the striking timber ceiling. These thick, rustic beams ooze old-world Italy, transporting you back in time. But with modern twists from minimalist furniture and quirky artworks, there’s an elegant clash of eras which makes this studio feel unique. We love the luxe touches like the marble kitchen sink and bathroom, although your host can provide an even better VIP experience. After being picked up by your private driver from the airport, you might fancy taking up their offer of a wine tasting tour or ride on a classic Vespa.

Parchment Scrolls oozes classical Roman style. There’s a wonderful mix of antique elements, like the ceiling beams or the painted doors, and more modern fittings that give it a sense of balance. It’s also in a fantastic position, in the cobblestone lanes of Ponte, and right opposite the grand Church of San Biagio. All of these blessings manage to outweigh the only real problem, which is the second bathroom. It doesn’t have the best ventilation, and the shower is only 190cm high, but we think that it’s forgivable given the rest of the space.

Where do we start with this fantastic apartment? Firstly, there’s a great private roof terrace with 360-degree views of Rome. Adjacent to the terrace, there's a study area, perfect for when you need to work while away. Another highlight is the stylish living space with its designer furnishings. We love that both bathrooms here are en-suite too. The location needs to be mentioned as well – this place is just a short stroll from the Spanish Steps. Within walking distance, you’ll also find the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and much more.

Two single sofa beds offer sleeping space for little ones in the lounge, though we think this pad is best for a couple. As for the location, you'll be based in Trastevere. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, local trattorias, and artisan shops, this neighbourhood is the perfect stomping grounds for those seeking an authentic stay. You're also an easy stroll into the centre if sightseeing is on your to-do list.

It’s easy to see the lengths that your host, Luca has gone to with this home to really bring a snug studio space alive—it’s full of interesting details which simultaneously stand alone and work in harmony to tie the place together. From the textured, botanical print wallpaper to the gold sunburst mirror and vitalising forest green accents, its quirkiness fits in well with the local area, famous for its individuality and bohemian spirit. Your next-door neighbour is pretty interesting too, you share a wall with the 600-year-old Church of Sant'Agata—fortunately, the bells no longer ring so you can indulge in plenty of lie-ins. Take to the meandering cobblestone streets where colourful buildings give way to wide-open piazzas and wandering side streets filled with rustic bars and authentic trattorias. What’s more, some of the city’s best attractions, like the Colosseum, Marcello Theatre and the Spada Gallery, are well within a thirty-minute walk from your Roman bolthole.

Simply put, Paparazzi is stylish, well-kept and right in the middle of Rome. Domenico is incredibly attentive as a host, and always ready to help, and while there are a few issues that we found, the majority were unavoidable given the age and positioning of the building (fairly slow wi-fi, for example), and the positives far outweigh the negatives. The apartment has been redone recently and you can really tell, particularly in the bathrooms, which feel very modern and sleek.

Horse-Drawn feels like a real home. It’s bright and welcoming, and as it’s been designed as a place to live, rather than one to rent, you don’t get the glitches that sometimes pop up in the latter. It also means that the kitchen is really well equipped – it's easy enough to whip up a decent meal to be enjoyed as a group in the charming, light-filled dining room. There are a few signs of age on the walls and floor, but these don’t detract in any way from the overall environment. In fact, we think that's what makes this 17th-century home – take in the original features from the get-go. Whether you're enjoying a good book by the fireplace or eating lunch under the exposed beams, you'll feel immersed in the heart of the world's most ancient city. We love how the pops of purple and green, abstract artwork and book-filled shelves make this spot so cosy and inviting after a day spent sightseeing. And the location of this fabulous apartment is no exception. Just six minutes from the Spanish Steps, five from Villa Borghese, and only two from the Piazza del Popolo, you’ll have no trouble seeing the sights. But the traditional Italian sights continue inside. Your bright living space features large French windows which illuminate rich, hardwood floors, chunky timber ceilings, and some captivating artworks. You’ll love relaxing on the plush sofa with a glass of primitivo in hand as the cherubs look upon you from the walls. As for the home, the rustic charm of the rafters and furnishings is sweet and well-kept. It's worth noting that despite being spacious, this home's sleeping arrangements feature a double sofa bed and another room with two single sofa beds that might be more suitable for children. With two other double beds available, however, it's the ideal pad for a family getaway.
