This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

This sixth-floor loft apartment does things differently. There’s no TV for starters, and the bedrooms are comfortable, yet not breathtaking. So what caught our discerning eye? Step out onto the 200sq/metre rooftop terrace, overlooking picturesque Rome and all of your questions will be answered. The decked terrace comes with a veranda cover, plenty of sofa seating and a table for alfresco dining – we can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, eating, drinking and laughing as the sun goes down. While there's certainly a Roman rustic charm to the home, with its wooden floorboards and low beamed ceilings, the modern details really bring the living room and kitchen to life. Light pours in through the sleek crittall windows, extending the space out to the terrace and creating a bright and airy kitchen-diner area – the modern breakfast bar is the perfect spot to sip your morning espresso. When – all caffeinated and ready to explore – you do eventually peel yourself away from that beautiful terrace, the home's location is ideal for discovering the city's ancient sights. Walk to the Colosseum in twenty minutes and visit the Roman Forum, under three kilometres from home. Termini train station is also a twenty-minute stroll away, connecting you to the rest of the city in no time at all. While a wander through the immediate neighbourhood will have you passing plenty of pastry shops, traditional trattorias and cocktail bars – with so much to see and do, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Perfect for art-lovers and history-buffs, La Vetreria is a unique hideaway full of lovingly preserved rustic elegance. Set in an old glassworks studio, this loft-style space has been recently restored — by the architect husband of the host, no less — and you will find an eclectic mix of contemporary furnishings set against stunning original stonework and an impressive arch in the middle of the living space. We love the way this stands in contrast to the glass mezzanine bedroom. Located slightly away from the busy tourist spots, you can enjoy an authentic slice of Roman life whilst being an easy walk from Termini Station. If you're ever in the mood for ice cream, the much-loved Gelateria La Romana is just up the road.

Before we even stepped foot in this apartment we fell in love with it. Located just beside Termini station, you're connected to the entire Eternal city, while also being only a nineteen-minute walk away from the Colosseum. You really couldn't be better placed. Inside, the home has a warm, genuine feel to it with vibrant patterned wallpapers, pops of colour and dark wooden furnishings. Sleep soundly in the charming bedrooms where plenty of natural light pours through the Juliet balconies and into the rustic yet homely interior. Take to the stylish breakfast bar for a quick coffee, before exploring the iconic sights of Rome. With great links to the wider area and Italy as a whole, if you're ever looking to roam beyond the city (unlikely, we know), a trip back into the past to the ancient site of Pompeii is an excellent excursion and is just over two hours on the train.

Catherine Wheel feels far bigger than it should thanks to the high ceiling, which is beautifully decorated and gives the flat its focal point. There are a few other pretty period details, like the fireplace (unfortunately only for show, these days) and a little balcony overlooking the street. You’re in a very convenient location, although not the most evocative. But the station is nearby and you’re a bit removed from the throngs of tourists that seem to march back and forth between the Trevi fountain and the Spanish Steps.

Simply charming, you'll be captivated by the quaint Roman charm from the moment you arrive here. Minimal designs and modern furnishings create a fuss-free, compact space ideal for long weekends and short stays in the city. While painted radiators, geometric mirrors, and ceramic cacti all bring character, pops of colour seen through the mismatched chairs and cushions make waking up here refreshingly easy. Set away from the more touristy areas, the home is situated on Via Tiburtina, a road with history going all the way back to the third century BCE, and these days it’s a bustling thoroughfare, always packed with locals going about their business. Get to know the public transport system and hop on the underground metro or bus routes to reach Rome's best known historic attractions, with most sights averaging around a twenty-five-minute commute from this home. That being said, you'll never be far from authentic Italian eateries and restaurants here, and in the Tiburtino district, you'll be eating top-notch, quality pizza and pasta as if you were a local, rather than being sucked in by tourist traps and prices elsewhere in the city.

The kitchen has all you need to rustle up antipasti and light bites, while the living space is just the spot to kick back after sightseeing. Speaking of adventures, you'll find the sprawling Villa Borghese about a fifteen-minute stroll away. Landmarks are within easy reach, thanks to the nearby bus. Or, for those who don't mind stretching their legs, you can walk to the Trevi Fountain in thirty. The local neighbourhood offers an array of shops, eateries, and bars to discover, too.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. When you’re ready to head out and explore, make a beeline for Villa Borghese (a ten-minute walk) or stroll just twenty minutes to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

With heaps of Italian soul and rustic charm, this quiet, well-kept and beautifully appointed apartment offers everything needed for that dolce vita. For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

Perched along a quiet, ancient street in the atmospheric Navona district, and with all of the city’s must-see sights reachable on foot, the location of this immaculately presented apartment is hard to beat. Get off to a flying start just around the corner at Piazza Navona (three minutes on foot) –⁠ one of the city’s most famous squares and 'the spot' for an evening aperitivo. And when thoughts turn to food, you’re spoilt for choice here –⁠ with bustling coffee bars, authentic trattorias, and high-end restaurants all just a short jaunt from your door. Back at home, this apartment makes quite a first impression with its grand, period exterior and a spiraling internal staircase leading to your door. The décor pairs contemporary furnishings alongside period features, including exposed original brickwork and timber-clad ceilings of high and mighty proportions. And despite its prime central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels –⁠ particularly in the bedrooms, which overlook a peaceful internal courtyard. So you’ll be sure to bank a peaceful night’s sleep here, ready for another adventure in the Eternal City.

Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Tucked between Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Borghese, you couldn't ask for a better spot to base yourself during your Roman holiday. The cobbled street outside is utterly charming, and even with the crowds milling about a few hundred metres away, it's quite peaceful. The sprawling Villa Borghese is just five minutes away – it's an absolute must-visit, home to lush greenery, city views and beautiful sculptures, plus it's where you'll find the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre and Museo Pietro Canonica. You're also not far from other tourist attractions – the Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk, while the Pantheon is reachable in twenty. Inside, the apartment is bright and roomy, with a sleek kitchen and two cosy sofas that you'll want to sink into after a busy. We particularly liked the beautiful artwork of local sights that adorn the walls, and there's even a delicious restaurant downstairs when you don't feel like cooking. End your evenings on the private terrace – just pour yourself a glass of wine and relax as the sun goes down, basking in the magic of Rome.

Villa Borghese Gardens, the Pantheon and the Colosseum can also be easily reached on foot. With high ceilings and plenty of natural light, this is a great home-from-home for your stay in Rome. There’s a private balcony perfect for a morning coffee and one of the bedrooms has a desk for when you need to catch up on work. Your hosts have thought of everything here – guests can also personalise their sleep experience with a pillow menu. If you're looking for a luxurious, central and comfortable stay in the Eternal City, then this apartment is ideal.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.

With its location just moments from the Spanish Steps, this apartment is hard to beat. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

No monument captures the spirit of Rome quite as like the Colosseum, and being as close to the amphitheatre as this home is a real privilege. Just six minutes (on foot) to the emblematic attraction, and a traditional local area full of authentic eateries and beautiful tangerine buildings – you're perfectly placed here. Back home, you'll find a sociable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area benefitting from sleek grey floors, tasteful artwork of the city by night and plenty of natural light pouring in. Wandering through the home, you'll notice a collection of art and literature books, quirky adornments and funky printed wallpapers in the bedrooms. There, those who are working from home during their stay will be able to power through emails at the dedicated desk spaces. The other thing that really makes the flat stick out is Simona and her hosting. She’s an absolute delight and will do everything possible to make your stay as good as it can be.

Sleek and sophisticated with a dash of luxe, Eva's Nest is a superb choice for its enviable location just minutes from Via Condotti and Piazza di Spagna. Perfect for any group seeking the buzz of the historic centre, this  space is equally ideal for some much-needed R&R after long days on your feet. Plush velvet, wood floors, elegant gilding, and soft tones echo the colours of Rome while light - airy bedrooms, each with a contemporary en-suite, offer extra privacy. Although the kitchen is compact, the large dining area and charming balcony offer lovely spaces for eating in.

Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. Get off to a flying start with a hefty dose of Roman life around the corner at Campo de Fiori (a three-minute walk) –⁠ by day, the piazza hosts one of the city's best-known markets, and by night, its bars and restaurants keep the night flowing. Or do like the locals with early-evening passeggiatas along the postcard-pretty River Tiber, it's just a four-minute walk from your door.

Back at home, this modern apartment housed in an ancient Roman villa of mighty proportions makes quite the first impression with its floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural daylight and revealing charming scenes of the pretty piazza below.

The designers have cleverly used the height of those lofty, exposed beam ceilings to create a nifty mezzanine level that houses the second bedroom. Stay in a fantastic location on Via Margutta (the home of Gregory Peck’s journalist in Roman Holiday), just a six-minute walk from the Villa Borghese Gardens and eight minutes from the Spanish Steps. After some morning sightseeing, return home, past the excellent restaurant in the courtyard serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner, and fling open the doors to your private terrace. Sit on the patio set with an afternoon bottle of wine, or sprawl out on a lounger with a good novel – you’ll have a pretty view of the surrounding pastel buildings and plenty of sunshine. Inside, the apartment is just as lovely – a bright, tastefully decorated space with designer furniture and carefully selected artworks. Milliner has a history as a family home – Olimpia actually grew up here – and as such it’s got a bit of soul to it. It’s been designed to last, and many of the pieces of furniture have a sense of intransigence to them, from the tree boughs to the wicker and the collection of books. The space is slightly lopsided, as most of it feels quite large, but the second bedroom is definitely undersized, but this is really just a quibble. It’s a welcoming, genuine place.
