You'll see people sipping Aperol spritz in the summertime, and red wine come winter, but out on the terraces whatever the weather. Dubbed as the historic centre of Rome, this humble home boasts an idyllic location, just minutes from the city's most notable museums and monuments. Stroll across the River Tibet for twenty-five minutes and you'll wind up at the Roman Forum where you'll spend hours exploring and unearthing its history. From there continue on to the Colosseum, before heading back home for some well-deserved downtime. Enjoy panoramic views over the neighbouring rooftops as you take the elevator up to the top floor, where you'll find your apartment set away from the hustle of it all. Inside, contemporary interiors – carefully selected by local designer Beatrice Medici offer a notable contrast from the historic surroundings of the local area. While funky artwork brings colour to an otherwise minimal design style. Rest up in the bedroom which faces the back courtyard of the home and allows for increased privacy, as well as that all-important peace and quiet after an action-packed day.

This charming detached home is in a prime location for a relaxed Roman retreat. Surrounded by picturesque streets full of authentic eateries in the Trastevere district, it's also within walking distance to the capital's top attractions like the Colosseum and the Pantheon. The home comes with plenty of private outdoor spaces – a rarity for such a central location – including Juliet balconies with each room, a roof terrace, and a garden. Spread over three floors with several dining areas, this is a great spot for families or small groups exploring Rome.

The palazzo that houses this apartment is something to behold. It's a wonderfully historic building that backs onto a little square and housed renowned American expressionist painter Cy Twombly for a good part of his later life. Once inside, the apartment is simple and traditional but elegant. There are plenty of eye-catching original features on display, including the stunning exposed beam ceiling and open fireplace, It lacks the personal effects of a lived-in home, which will appeal to those who tend to find Roman apartments on the busy side, but your hosts made your comfort their number one priority – the beds (and linens in particular) feel very luxurious and make getting up in the morning that little bit trickier. Explore the labyrinth of streets and you'll find yourself a few minutes' walk from the River Tiber, a five-minute stroll from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 550 metres from the stunning Piazza Navona.

With the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and even the Roman Forum all within walking distance, this four-bedroom apartment couldn’t be in a better spot for sightseeing. You’ll be right in the heart of historic Rome, but it’s not just the location we love about this home. The apartment is bright and spacious, spread over two floors at the top of a charming old building. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a well-appointed kitchen and separate dining room, plus a living area that opens onto a sunny terrace (a real treat in the centre of the city). The only downside is there’s no lift, however being up high means you’re rewarded with glorious views of the Roman rooftops.

Iconic landmarks like the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and the Trevi Fountain are also within walking distance, so the location is great. A short stroll from Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, this apartment is perfectly located for exploring Rome. It’s ideal for a family that won’t mind the sleeping arrangements, with one guest sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room and one sleeping on an additional sofa bed in the main bedroom. Given its third-floor position, you’ll all need to be able to climb stairs – and you might want to travel light. The large, well-appointed kitchen has everything you need to create some Italian cuisine too. This home is a great place to stay if you’re looking to experience Roman life.

Dimora Romana

A hidden gem between the Tiber and Piazza Venezia, centred on lively Via del Portico d’Ottavia. Here is where you'll find this magnificent apartment, right in the beating heart of Rome's Jewish Quarter. Peer out of large windows in the living room at the cobbled streets below, and you'll soon discover a historic neighbourhood of makers studios, petite shops, kosher bakeries and thronging trattorias sitting alongside the unique square dome of Rome's main synagogue. The home's main living and dining room is furnished with dark wood and deep reds, which lend a warm, welcoming feel that will stay with you throughout your time here. The compact kitchen is perfect for rustling up a quick meal, but given that you're staying in a food lover's city, you could be forgiven for eating out most of the time. Handily, two of the area's best restaurants lie directly beneath your feet – Nonna Betta and Il Giardino Romano both serve up sumptuous Italian-Kosher dishes in an authentic atmosphere. Wander ten minutes across the Tiber, you'll find yourself in the hip, bohemian area of Trastevere with its innovative trattorias and craft beer pubs.

When in Rome

Instead of the very heart of Trastevere, Sky Queen is a little bit to the north. This is actually a fantastic location – you can avoid the hordes of revellers, and the Vatican is easy to reach, while the river is just at the end of the road.  A quieter option in a lovely location, this home is perfect if you're looking for an authentic stay – with all the big attractions within a half-hour walk.  

The double-height ceiling and the large windows make this place bright and breezy, which is surprisingly rare for this neighbourhood as the narrow streets and old buildings often conspire to keep sunlight away. There's a sense of history, with beamed ceilings, and a modern twist thanks to the mezzanine bedroom floor and the floating stairs. A comfy sofa takes the prime position in the open-plan living space, with a handy desk area and a contemporary kitchen tucked away under the mezzanine.
